The Need for Speed movie from DreamWorks and starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul hit theaters on Friday and while critics might not have adored it, the CGI-free film managed to nearly recoup its entire production budget during its opening weekend.

The numbers are in (via The Hollywood Reporter) and though the Need for Speed movie finished third in North America with $17.8 million, it picked up another $45.6 million internationally for a total of $63.4 million. The movie's production budget was $66 million.

"It's a disappointing start on the domestic side, but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great," Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said. Disney is DreamWorks' distribution partner for the Need for Speed movie. "This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are."

In North America, Need for Speed finished third behind 300: Rise of An Empire ($19.1 million) and Mr. Peabody & Sherman $21.2 million. For more on the Need for Speed movie, check out GameSpot's review of the film.

I work at a movie theater so i seen most of this movie and i must say this movie isn't that bad..... its absolutely terrible. The whole movie hinges on the stupidest plot. If you watch it you will know what i mean. The maclaren(forza 5 car) can barely keep Up with the other cars. And kid cudi somehow finds the perfect mix between some what funny and completely annoying and i love that guy. And no spoilers but the apache helicopter scene is a little funny and all but no one fucking explains how they get that helicopter. So over all a pretty terrible movie

<< LINK REMOVED >> expensive cars, no CGI, insurance, people's lives at stake, production, actors, stuntmen, editing, plus a lot of other things add up.

I'm glad it did bad. Need for Speed is a GAME not a movie. It has no storyline or at most a very minimal one and should have never been adapted to a movie. Outside of the name, the movie has nothing to do with the game. There are much better games out there that can be adapted to really great movies, but the cost of production probably stopped most from being made. This was nothing more than a cash grab on the name.

I'd like to see it, but the last time I went to the movies, I spent over 30 bucks for the two of us. So I'm not going to the movies again for probably at least 6 months.

Plus, the PG-13 rating usually means it sucks.

How the **** can you keep an audience's attention when really all they are doing is drooling over pretty cars.

The movie's rating is hilarious: PG-13 | Nudity, Disturbing Crash Scenes, Seq. of Reckless Street Racing and Crude Language. Sounds like my morning commute.

I don't think there really was a Need for Speed, at least not judging by it's earnings and the commercials I've seen.

It's sad nowadays when a movie has "CGI Free" as a feature. Should be the other way around.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's ironic that a movie based on a video game franchise has no CGI.

Holly Shit! NFS flop that bad?! I thought the movie was alright but I thought it would be a hit movie if you like Fast and Furious movies assuming people never play or heard NFS. Oh well next month it's all about Captain American: Winter Soldier.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It remade its budget in its opening weekend, this is not a flop well unless it were to stop making money all of a sudden lol.

They could've added better cops and a sergeant Cross like cop. NFS Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted and Rivals are good games because of the exciting chasing and racing. NFS movie lacks both of those things and have bad acting. I hope they make a better one, I really hope so. NFS Fan

NFS for the win. I wonder whether it will be a long running franchise like Fast and Furious now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I doubt it. While Fast and Furious is quite generic and simple as a concept, it's unique in how each movie has done better than the last one (except spin-off Tokyo Drift). No wonder that the NFS movie did better overseas, the last Fast and Furious got 70 % of its revenue from non-USA countries.

And they say American movie audiences are dumb and will watch anything.

I like how they were constantly saying the movie had no CGI, as if they thought that would be enough to mask all of the movie's other problems.
