How PS5 And Xbox Series X Backward Compatibility Load Times Compare

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Here's how PS5 and Xbox Series X perform booting up some of the last generation's most notable load time offenders.

A significant innovation in PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S is the inclusion of an internal NVMe SSD (solid-state drive). With the power of an SSD, the past console generation's painfully long load times will mostly be a thing of the past. While the drive will benefit all of these consoles' latest games, it will also improve load times for previous-generation games played via backward compatibility, getting you into those classic titles faster than ever before.

Sony, Microsoft, and other third-party publishers are ever offering next-gen patches for certain games that further enhance their load times and performance. This is important for those looking to make the jump onto new consoles, as when the library of next-generation games runs dry, console owners will likely look to the past to ease the wait for new games.

So, if you're here, you're probably wondering how the load times compare on Sony's and Microsoft's machines for previous-generation games. As mentioned, backwards compatibility is a huge selling point this generation, so knowing which console pulls through with the fastest load times is essential for players, especially if you're still on the fence about which next-gen console you want to buy.

To help you get a sense of how PS5 and Xbox Series X load times compare, we ran tests on games with notably long boot-up times on previous-gen consoles. While Xbox Series S also has an SSD, we chose to do our load time comparison with the higher spec Xbox Series X to give you a better idea of how it stacks up against PS5. Theoretically, though, the Series S load times should not be too different from what we've experienced with the Series X.

Below you can find tables detailing load times down to the millisecond, each recorded across both consoles to the best of our abilities. It's worth noting that our tests were run on the latest non-enhanced patches for each game, though we'll be sure to update this feature once next-gen performance-enhancing patches arrive for any of the games we've listed below.

For a visual take on how the load times compare in real-time, be sure to watch our video comparison in the player above. Otherwise, read our full thoughts on each console in our PS5 review and Xbox Series X review. If you're looking for our Xbox Series S review, we've got you covered there, too. You don't have too long to wait until you can play them.

Interesting. But how do the actual BEST games of the past few years like Bloodborne, Last Of Us, Uncharted, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost Of Tsushima and Spider-Man run on the Xbox? Are those speeds also superior?

(Just playing. Calm yourself.)

@mooglestar: I have a PS4, and I got all those games you cited (all of them on sales, except Ghost of Tsushima). Opinions. To me the only ones from your list that deserve all the accolades / critical acclaim are Spiderman and God of War. Ghost of Tsushima is really good, but it ends too fast. No replay value whatsoever. Last of Us and Uncharted: both end even faster, even less replay value. Horizon Zero Dawn and Bloodborne are 2 of the most overrated games EVER. I got WAY MORE enjoyment from "Fist of The North Star Lost Paradise" (a good exclusive you forgot) than from Horizon, for example. But again: OPINIONS.

@mooglestar: "Best" is subjective. The only 1 of those games I'm even remotely interested in playing is Ghost of Tsushima.

Those games are generic single player titles that you're done with in 12 hours (at best). Seems to be all you've got now that console you seem extremely intent on fanboying for has proven to be the technically inferior one.

@mooglestar: lmao "critical acclaimed games" you mean generic weeb single player titles that you're done with in 12 hours that Sony pays for reviews?

Strange how the last of us 2's user rating is so much lower than it's "critic" rating, I wonder why that is..

Sony fanboys on suicide watch, lmao, stay salty :)

@hannibalb: I use my Xbox One X for 3rd party games and my PS4 for exclusives.

Get one thing straight... The PS exclusives are a top of the line gaming experience. Most of them can go into the 25+ hour range if you do every mission. You play a game to enjoy it, not speed run it.

I prefer my Xbox for 3rd parties and the controller, but don't be a fool. Sony has excellent exclusives and the fact they are single player is what MS is lacking.

Blame Don Mattrick for closing 99% of MS Game Studios in favor of timed, 3rd party exclusives. Studios that were together for decades, just gone... Poof. So now MS is starting over with 1st party while Sony never slowed down.

MS believed that the future was ALL multiplayer, it's not. Many people still want a well made game with a great story as well.

@Vodoo: I conpletely agree with you. I massively prefer my Xbox One X to my PS4 for most things, e.g. 3rd party gaming, Live experience, controller, but you can't knock the PS4 console exclusives - they're excellent and worth buying a PS4 for on their own.

@hannibalb: Oh dear, you're clearly deeply affected by Playstation's dominance over Xbox. Such anger, such hate. It's been three generations in a row hasn't it? I can't imagine what you've been through. But hey, it's great that you're still carrying on with this delusion. That kind of dedication shows character!

Meanwhile PS4 with its "generic single player titles" is about to reach 114 million in console sales. More than twice Xbox One. But you still get a gold star for your rambling efforts. Yay!

@hannibalb: I'm upset? LOL. Dang, I mean, the quality of your responses were weak to begin with but that last one really takes the cake. I guess you can't argue facts. The sales and vast majority of reviews are what they are. Anyway, as you've now resorted to blatant lies and childish insults, this will be my last response, as anything else you have to say won't be read. Next time think before talking son :D

I know XB uses Direct Storage. But even then surely PS has something equivalent for that twice as fast SSD. Unless it only works in PS5 games and not BC titles. Either way it's disappointing that the PS5 load times are that much worse.

@kalade: yea I agree. But BC isn’t really PlayStation’s thing, right? There message was we are all about next gen. While all but a few PS4 games will work on the PS5, there won’t be huge improvements. Also the ssd on the ps5 is brand new tech. Literally created for the ps5. So it will take a little while to get it running. I mean gears 5 optimized on the XSX from boot to start is like 39 seconds. Miles Morales is 7. So we can see what the XSX can with extra power it got. But we have to wait until games that are made for both to truly see the difference.

Gears 5 is not using the Xbox Velocity Architecture....they just amplified the framerate and graphics......as everyone knows there isn't yet a game using the full potential of the Series X.

@rodoxthedark: Yeah. So many people on here keep talking about how PS5 got beat in load times with it's "super fast ssd" but, that is without them understanding that these are not next gen games made for the new M.2. At some point the SSD can be too fast which can cause loading bottlenecks for older games.

What are you talking about? The PS5's onboard SSD isn't an M.2 drive.

Sony promised backwards compatibility and they delivered not like Sony promised it was going to be any good....

Why is the external drive load so slow almost no difference between SSD and HHD? Did Sony do it on purpose to hype the Internal SSD?
