How PS5 And Xbox Series X Backward Compatibility Load Times Compare

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Here's how PS5 and Xbox Series X perform booting up some of the last generation's most notable load time offenders.

A significant innovation in PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S is the inclusion of an internal NVMe SSD (solid-state drive). With the power of an SSD, the past console generation's painfully long load times will mostly be a thing of the past. While the drive will benefit all of these consoles' latest games, it will also improve load times for previous-generation games played via backward compatibility, getting you into those classic titles faster than ever before.

Sony, Microsoft, and other third-party publishers are ever offering next-gen patches for certain games that further enhance their load times and performance. This is important for those looking to make the jump onto new consoles, as when the library of next-generation games runs dry, console owners will likely look to the past to ease the wait for new games.

So, if you're here, you're probably wondering how the load times compare on Sony's and Microsoft's machines for previous-generation games. As mentioned, backwards compatibility is a huge selling point this generation, so knowing which console pulls through with the fastest load times is essential for players, especially if you're still on the fence about which next-gen console you want to buy.

To help you get a sense of how PS5 and Xbox Series X load times compare, we ran tests on games with notably long boot-up times on previous-gen consoles. While Xbox Series S also has an SSD, we chose to do our load time comparison with the higher spec Xbox Series X to give you a better idea of how it stacks up against PS5. Theoretically, though, the Series S load times should not be too different from what we've experienced with the Series X.

Below you can find tables detailing load times down to the millisecond, each recorded across both consoles to the best of our abilities. It's worth noting that our tests were run on the latest non-enhanced patches for each game, though we'll be sure to update this feature once next-gen performance-enhancing patches arrive for any of the games we've listed below.

For a visual take on how the load times compare in real-time, be sure to watch our video comparison in the player above. Otherwise, read our full thoughts on each console in our PS5 review and Xbox Series X review. If you're looking for our Xbox Series S review, we've got you covered there, too. You don't have too long to wait until you can play them.

If my PC took as long as these two junk boxes to load games, I’d quit gaming altogether

@jsprunk: pc gets faster patch updates vs console. Plus, your hardware should be better, + you might even be running mods that change the game completely.

@WelBluVid: Well, my point was a little facetious in that caring about 5ms of load time is a little ridiculous.

@jsprunk: You've said it... But I mean, some of us are entitled, I guess. Like, I've played games on an MSX (late 1980's) where you had to load 'em from a cassette player, and it took 2 minutes to load a crappy PORT of Miss Pac-Man or Elevator Action. But as an 8 year old kid eager to play, 2 minutes was nothing...

I am still searching the interwebs for the article that compares load times of last gen's top consoles and this next gen on Valhalla, Cold War, and Destiny, among others.

I can piece together the Destiny info, but why not have it in once place?

Ultimately, I'm already committed. My Xbox Series X is on a delivery truck right now, and I can wait until Horizon is released (next Christmas) for the PS5. With the ability to play pretty much all the current gen games on this machine as new titles filter out, it will truly be an awesome year of gaming until then.

LOL, after all Sony's hard talk about the PS5's storage speed, the XSX beat it 9 out of 10 tests. And a lot of those wins weren't even close.

One thing to consider is that while all Xboxes run (essentially) the same OS, PlayStations don't. So the PS5's delay is probably due to some kind of emulation, VM, or whatever compatibility mechanism Sony uses taking time to load. It's still a pretty bad result regardless, based on Sony's promo claims and the PS5 SSD's speed specs.

Not only is the XSX faster in almost all of those cases, it wipes the floor with the PS5 in many cases. With all the noise Sony has been making about PS5 load times, this is really hilarious.

These were timed from basically inserting the disc, through all the bs screens, not loading a save. That's not even taking into account the Xbox's quick launch feature.

It blew my mind how Xbox was almost a whole minute faster in one of those games.

Regardless, I'm holding off on any next gen systems until A) There's games, and B) It seems Sony may have rushed this console a bit and needs some software updates.

Still wondering if Sony will patch in VRR at some point, as many newer tv's are incorporating this feature.

I would expect that in the PS5 Pro. The PS5 is so badly outgunned vs. the XSX it's gonna hit its hardware limit pretty soon. It already can't do 60fps & ray tracing simultaneously, while the XSX has been doing that since this summer.

Dafuq, next gens loadingtimes is shittier than those on my pc from 2016.

Is this an out of season april fools joke?

I thought we could expect loading times that were less than a second. My toaster loads faster than these machines.

@DeadPhoenix86: For RDR2, there's a mod on PC which skips / bypasses the shotgun shells + (red) Rockstar Logo + legal messages intro screen, that saves almost 30 seconds ;)

Well it's kind of always been a thing, for a while anyway, that the xb would optimize older games better. So I would have to see next-gen first.

So the PS5 video games loads into cache then to RAM then to the CPU/GPU? Couldn’t Sony have just added faster RAM and more processing power?

What exactly makes the PS5 SSD and controller so special?

@systemoverload: I'm guessing there's a backwards compat layer that has to load 1st since, unlike Xbox, all PS5s don't use the same OS.

When you have Sony advertising for over 8 months their "ultra fast SSD" only for everyone to find out through comparisons with Series X/S that in fact is not as fast as everyone expected it to be then it raises the question "what was that Sony talk all about?"

Sony needs to PUT UP OR SHUT UP

Ha ha ha

It's funny to see people making excuses that this super fast SSD isn't able to be as fast as the Xbox because they aren't optimized for m.2?

It makes a large memory request, it fetches it and load done. PCs prove this type of idea is stupid.

The kinds of optimizations that will be done will be around texture streaming. That's realtime as your playing. Not a massive preload.

This is just poor design on the FSB interface with that SSD.

@blueaurora: Exactly. I also wonder in the PS5 uses aggressive disk compression to save space. If that's the case, then a fast SSD would actually hurt load time because it floods the CPU with data to decompress. Sony really painted themselves into a corner with the PS5, I have a feeling the PS5 Pro will be out within 2 years.

@jdrch: They need to. I'm still thinking back where a leak suggested a ps5 port of resident evil was running poorly on the ps5 while it hummed along XSX. This is all proving to be true. Sony really did themselves a disservice with the FSB design.

I absolutely agree they need to double down on a pro version sooner rather than later.

@blueaurora: it’s on worse, but it’ll still be fine. Plus tech it should be cheaper to make than series x, so price cuts could help.

This really doesn’t meant much. I will wait until these games are optimized for next gen. Then we can see how they will load. All this shows me is what I already know, the XSX has more power. If you want to get an idea maybe look at AC Valhalla. As it’s one of the first games to also take advantage of next gen.
