How They Made Westworld's Wild Orgy Scene [SPOILERS]
"We wanted to create the best sex orgy you can imagine."
The fifth episode of HBO's Westworld aired last night and had a number of memorable scenes, including one in the newly introduced city of Pariah involving an orgy. We now know more about how the scene came to life and the motivation for creating it in the first place.
Co-executive producer Richard Lewis told The Hollywood Reporter that the vivid scene was created in part because showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy "wanted to do something that's epic."
They "always wanted to do the biggest, best, and most mind-blowing stuff, so we wanted to create the best sex orgy you can imagine," he said. "To that effect, we had some stylists. We really curated the scene to the T. Sometimes, to me, it has almost a medieval flavor. You can't categorize it, because it's so uniquely strange and beautiful in a way."
He went on to say that the scene was inspired in part by Eyes Wide Shut and the work of film legend Stanley Kubrick. The movie 120 Days of Sodom was also an inspiration.
You may be surprised to learn that the sex-filled Westworld scene was filmed in a mausoleum in Compton. Really.
"That's where we found this location: a very narrow building where essentially 40,000 bodies are buried above ground," Lewis explained. "It was a strange place to begin with. It had a very haunting flavor to it, right from the get go. (Laughs.) It was very surreal."
"Special extras" were hired for the orgy scene, Lewis went on to say, adding that they also brought on a "sex stylist" to ensure that everything "looked properly choreographed."
"We were trying to make things feel elegant and graceful and beautiful and strange," he said.
Asked if there was ever a concern that the scene went too far, Lewis said he thinks the sequence had a "modicum of taste" to it that made it more sensual in nature than pornographic.
