How To Get Mafia 2 And Mafia 3 Definitive Editions For Free If You Own The Originals

2K Games is giving free Definitive Edition upgrades to owners of Mafia 2 on Steam and Mafia 3 on all platforms.

2K games has confirmed Mafia: Definitive Edition, a full remake of the 2002 action-adventure for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, will release August 28. It'll come packaged with the Mafia: Trilogy and as a standalone title that's available to pre-order now. Fans of the Mafia series are also getting some free content in the form of Definitive Edition upgrades for Mafia II and Mafia III. If you own Mafia II on Steam, you can update the 10-year-old title to experience the adventure in high definition for free. Mafia III's upgrade is free on all platforms (PS4, Xbox One, and PC) and grants access to all of the post-launch DLC. In fact, the game will automatically update to the Definitive Edition if you have the original installed on your console already, and you can claim the extra content packs in the various digital stores, as well.

The free upgrades were announced alongside the first official details on Mafia: Definitive Edition. "Note that if you already own Mafia II on Steam, you will be automatically granted Mafia II: Definitive Edition at no additional cost. Furthermore, if you already own Mafia III on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Steam, you will be upgraded to Mafia III: Definitive Edition at no additional cost," 2K wrote in a blog post.

Mafia II's free upgrade unlocks three story expansions--The Betrayal of Jimmy, Jimmy's Vendetta, and Joe's Adventure--as well as four gear packs. Though the free upgrade is only available on PC via Steam, Mafia II: Definitive Edition is also available as a separate purchase for $30 on all platforms.

Mafia III's Definitive Edition upgrade comes with all three story DLCS--Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times--and two gear packs. Those who already own physical or digital editions of Mafia III will simply have to download the new update to get the DLC. Even if you buy a physical edition of Mafia III in the future, you'll always be able to snag all of the DLC for free.

We also have a Mafia: Trilogy and Mafia: Definitive Edition buying guide if you're interested in the gorgeous remake of the first game.

Is the load times in Mafia 3 going to be fixed. Took almost 40 seconds to respawn after every death. Made the game unplayable for me. If they fixed that though, then I would love to actually be able to play the game.

I'm so glad the original game is getting a remake! The story was great but I never really played through the whole game back in the day. Definitely picking it up! Haven't played 2 or 3 but as far as I know Mafia II is worth playing as well.

This is how remasters should be in any case, no matter the effort.

No use to people like me, I mean I have Mafia 2 director's cut on Xbox 360. I won't be getting Mafia 2 definitive edition free. I have Mafia 3 Deluxe edition on PS4 which is the exact same thing as the definitive edition.

So this is no benefit to someone like me whatsoever. Mafia 1 remake looks good though. I will buy that.

User reviews on steam suggests that the mafia 3 definitive edition broke the original game. Performance issues and what not. Instead of doing justice to the 3rd installment they f$$$$d it up even more. Good job.

So Mafia 2 upgrade is only for Steam? I owned it on Xbox 360. That would not work?

@stevenpetite: Shouldn't it be "Mafia 2 And 3 Definitive Editions Free If You Own Original Games"?

The graphical updates are minor but getting all three DLCs for Mafia 2 is the sweet spot. I never played any of these DLCs, just the main story game.
