Hunger Games-Like Ark: Survival Evolved Spinoff Launches Today on PC

Survival of the Fittest.

After the big success of Ark: Survival Evolved on PC and Xbox One, developer Studio Wildcard today announced--and released--a brand new entry in the series. Called Ark: Survival of the Fittest, it is a multiplayer online survival arena (MOSA) game that began its life as a fan-made total conversion mod.

It's out today for free on Steam Early Access, and will come to consoles later. It supports up to 72 players on the game's official servers, while unofficial servers can host up to 200 players.

Survival of the Fittest is already park of Survival Evolved, so fans may be wondering why Studio Wildcard is making it its own game. According to the developer, the game mode "grew rapidly in popularity" among those who wanted a Hunger Games-like last man standing mode.

"This standalone game brings all the features of the mod, with upgrades, and newly integrates dedicated eSports ranking, matchmaking, reward, and tournament features to make it readily accessible to all players," Studio Wildcard explained.

In Survival of the Fittest, teams of players duke it out for supremacy, with a final showdown pitting two teams against each other for all the glory. You can form one- to six-person tribes and choose to take part in matches of varying game lengths.

"Balanced for intense competition, contestants begin in a neutral staging area where they can communicate pre-game, strategize, or talk trash," reads a line from the description. "After a countdown, they dramatically descend from the sky onto the Ark in a circular formation via beams of light.

"There is a cache of valuable items in the center--do survivors dash for the goods and fight it out, do they run into the forest and hide, search for dinosaurs to rapidly build their army, or do they freeze up from the sheer terror of death? A continually shrinking 'ring of death' forces contestants ever closer together over time."

Survival of the Fittest will also include an eSports element. Every month, the top 10 players (determined by skill ranking for Ranked matches) will be selected for the "Survivor League" for the four modes: 1v1, 2v2, 4v4, and 6v6. The top 10 players will receive the following cash rewards:

  1. $3500
  2. $2500
  3. $1800
  4. $1650
  5. $1500
  6. $1350
  7. $1200
  8. $1050
  9. $900
  10. $750

In all, Studio Wildcard will pay out $50,000 every month. Ranking will be available to see in real-time on the SurviveTheArk.com website.

Presumably to celebrate this announcement, Ark: Survival Evolved has been marked down to $18 on Steam. Do you plan to check out Survival of the Fittest? Let us know in the comments below!

Sounds like they wanted some of that Battle Royale action already in H1Z1

@Poodger: That'll be the new thing soon. Unfinished survival games that are released in a broken state are never fixed because why would you fix and complete a game that already made its money in sales? Soon it'll be broken battle royale games... all they have to do is convince that crowd that seems content in buying broken games that that's the new thing.

@jinzo9988: it is a fun game mode though, and the one in H1Z1 works perfectly

What a brilliant idea! Let's release a spin-off for a game that's not even out of beta yet!

@Silverline62: Its actually just a user created mod that they're allowing you to play separately so you don't have to mod your original file.

Its gamespot's weird reporting that called it a spin off.
