Indie hit Starbound has shifted one million copies in a month

Open-world platformer reaches 1m milestone and it's still in beta.

Open-world 2D extraterrestrial adventure Starbound has shifted over a million copies in its beta state, developer Chucklefish announced on Twitter.

The Starbound beta was only made available in mid-December, and the UK developer has also notched up $5.1 million of revenue from 187,733 preorders on its own site.

At time of writing, Starbound is third on Steam's top sellers chart, behind fellow Steam Early Access titles DayZ and Rust.

“Starbound is already extremely playable and contains a vast amount of content, however we decided to release the game as a beta through early access to ensure the community gets a chance to help us shape the game," said Chucklefish.

@MapleLeafKush Of course there's a point. Having fun!. Starbound is not your workplace it's a game. If my character gets wiped out i simply make another one. Simple.

I mean, the game is good. Great in fact. However, it's a blatant ripoff of Terraria. It's a little more in depth, but still Terraria.

<< LINK REMOVED >> its the same company... the same people who made terraria are making starbound. You can't 'rip off' from yourself.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well I don't mind a bigger, better looking and overall more fun game based on Terraria.

Yeah, I felt the same.....not that a ripoff of Terraria is bad, but I still feel guilty playing it. It's like....I'm a betrayer.

This game is great but character wipes were a problem but it is a beta. Can't wait for it to be completed. Huge potential!

Terraria was one of the most surprising games I've ever played. Simply fantastic.

I've actually held off buying this one because the devs have said they'll wipe progress with certain updates. Once that's over, this is a guaranteed purchase.

It's good to see an indie trio holding the top seller list.

It really gives me hope as a gamer for that there can still be amazing experiences out there.

My best gaming experiences of 2013 were all from indie tittles and most of the bad experiences come from the AAA space.

What? This game takes inspiration from games like Terraria and Minecraft. Those games are only a few years old.

Saw this on sale but didn't capture my attention. Don't really know what makes this any more unique; I've got Fez, Mark of the Ninja, and Spelunky so I'm kinda set
