Industry must innovate and evolve to thrive, says Sony

PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan says "no entertainment industry can just carry on the way it was," adding the walled garden model is breaking down.

The gaming industry must innovate and evolve if it wants to flourish, according to PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan. Speaking to MCV, the executive sounded off on the varied trends in the industry today.

Innovation and evolution are keys to a healthy industry, Ryan says.
Innovation and evolution are keys to a healthy industry, Ryan says.

“It is great that the industry evolves and goes in different directions,” Ryan said. “No entertainment industry can just carry on the way it was. For our industry to thrive and prosper it has to evolve and it has to innovate."

Ryan also explained that he believes closed platforms are "breaking down a bit" as a result of the rise of connected devices. He noted that the PlayStation 2 and PSP were not proper connected devices, and the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are.

“This is new ground for us," he said. "It didn’t seem it at the time but these walled gardens are actually nice, cosy places, and we are now going out into the big bad world where there are no rules. We are trying to set those rules."

The executive said Sony is being forced to "reset" much of its thinking, noting the company has been pushing the original PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 "basically the same way," and this was a mistake.

"And then all of a sudden we are like ‘You have to forget that and think differently,’” he said.

Sounds like they're trying to justify this epic stall in the console cycle. PS3 and Vita are properly connected devices? Won't that selling point fly out the window when they connect PS4 to Vita? No, because there won't be any PS4 until they've milked the Vita-PS3 racket. If they want to "evolve" or "innovate" before PC takes over the stagnant console market, they'll need to do more than make empty statements like these.

@Nintyfan95 Who's a fanboy? I haven't played a PC title in five years, when the new consoles were competitive I switched over.

@anvilone Milked? You do realize they're saving you $300-$400 by not releasing another console right? And as true PC gamer I can testify that The Last of Us looks better than almost anything on PC right now. Still can't beat Witcher 2 but I'd say the PS3 still has a long life ahead of it.

@theshonen8899 Then as a true PC gamer you're also aware that PS3 can't populate a Battlefield server with more than 24 players, less than half of what PC can handle. Not to mention the graphics disparity. After five or six years, I'm really not that concerned about having to purchase a new console. Considering that they have done such a poor hardware support job and offered no upgrades in that time, it's hard to see a solid downside to switching to PC, especially if developers will be developing more and more with that platform in mind.

Following this speech, Sony gave another speech on how they need to synergize a new tacit, hollistic approach to business and will be performing a brainstorm of all the movers and shakers.

He then finished the speech with another couple of emptyless phrases that mean absolutely nothing.

I have a feeling if EA releases a console, you will only be able to play EA games on it. That would not be interesting, but just plain wrong.

Really, stop linking my first comment with other halo/xbox trolls. Sure, I own a xbox and have Halo 3, but it haven't even mentioned that in my comment. Plus, Microsoft's exclusives like Gears of War and Halo aren't that innovative either. What I meant is: Sony isn't innovating the right way. All the people who replied to my comment either own a PS3 and enjoying free PSN games oblivious to what I said, or simply people who don't think. Sure, Sony have lots of exclusive titles, but saying those titles are innovative... really, you don't know what you're talking. Uncharted is Assassin's Creed with guns, Killzone is futuristic CoD (or Battlefield 2142, have it your way), God of War... it's cool, but repetitive kill 'em all game, Infamous is GTA with superpowers (Prototype?)... the only undeniably innovative title is Little Big Planet.

You know, that's the only thing I'll never criticize about Nintendo (that's because I'm a long date nintendist, but don't own one of his consoles for years): THEY know how to innovate. The exclusives may be dire, but are oh-so-damn fun and fresh. (Sadly, they still haven't released a dual-analog 3DS version...). And, news flash: I doubt 5% of the people seeing this post or my commentary wants some really innovative games, but I am one of those people. So before replying, review your game library first to see if 20%+ of your completed games are FPS.

@mat989 You didn't mention Journey, Heavy Rain, Sound Shapes, Gravity Rush, Closure, or Papo & Yo. It really helps to know what games are on Sony systems before blatantly criticizing it. I love Nintendo but I'd really like a new IP sometime soon. New Super Mario Bros is anything but fresh. And why does FPS have anything to do with your statement...at all? FPS games like Half-Life 2 or Bioshock have far more creativity and innovation than...New Super Mario Bros...

@mat989 You've never played Uncharted and/or Assassin's Creed, have you? Because you're really, really off.

And why are you avoiding the innovative games that came out because of Sony like Demon's Souls, Journey, Patapon, and Folklore?

@mat989 @Sivir123

Assassin's Creeed is a sandbox game w/melee combat. Uncharted is a linear action-adventure game with cover shooting. They are nothing alike.

Japaneses... haha. And no, they are not a different "thing"... like, wow. Demon's Souls was funded by Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan FYI and even co-developed by Japan Studios (Sony owned). You've never played it either, I'm guessing. Or else you wouldn't be asking about it's innovations. Let's just say it blends online multiplayer and the single player aspect like nothing else before it.

If you really believe Flow is a better exclusive (it isn't), fine. But how does that stop Journey from being innovative? Hint: It doesn't.

Now how does that Patapon from being an innovative game from Sony? Once again, it doesn't.

Any who, there is still a multitude of games that you're overlooking. This year alone there's Gravity Rush, Dyad, Papo & Yo, and Sound Shapes that are already out and they are VERY innovative and unique. Still to come, there's the Unfinished Swan for this year, as well as Puppeteer and Rain for next.

You're really underselling Sony here.

@Sivir123 1) I doubt you could.2) Childish comment.3) That's why most of Sony's games won't be innovative. Childish players. The majority, at least. Can't you come with a better commentary instead of trying to defend Sony with nothing? I've got lots of more interesting thing to do, so excuse me. I'll go see another news site's critics about this.

@minh800 I played both. So what? AC is acrobatic and have fighting masked in a quite nice story. It could be even better than Uncharted if it were an exclusive title as well.Demon Soul's is developed by japaneses, THEY are a complete different thing, something you can't understand, plus, is realistic RPGs that new? (maybe in this gen is, that's why you mentioned...). Journey...really? Flow is a better exclusive than this (or better: From Dust). Patapon is quite cool, but that's psp if you haven't noticed, and you could've said Parappa the Rapper as a better example, which by the way Sony killed. I haven't played folklore, maybe it is innovative. @Sivir123 First, I'm not rich. In my country, having a Xbox or PS3 is quite a luxury. Second, if I could, I'd have all consoles and still would have posted this from what I read and play. Third, I'm not saying those titles are garbage. I'm saying it's not as innovative as fanboys/sony employees are thinking and talking. Sony isn't even selling that much, both in games and consoles, to say they're "innovative", but as their fans are getting more and more mindless, it just might happen soon enough.

Sony is showing flashes of the right idea with cross-play gaming and getting two versions for one low price, but that should be the norm and not an exceptional case. Frankly I'll know that we've finally reached a holy grail in open gaming when XBOX, PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC gamers can play together in an online game of some sort...that will be a hallmark day.

Cross-play will never gonna happens on Closed-platform like Nintendo, Xbox, or Sony. there's no way those Corporate willing to lose a huge amounts of money. XO

Cross-play are only possible on open-environments like Windows (PC.) Linux, Android, Mac, or iPhone, actually Cross-play had been implemented on Steam, between PC and Mac. (Linux cross-play is under development on Valve.)

probably it will happened if Valve / Steam willing to release their own Console. Living-room space, Desktop, Mobile Laptop, different OS, Cloud Save, Dynamic Pricing all inter-connected under Steam platform, I think that would be awesome for all Gamers. =P

Is it me or are these generic statements from game company heads getting rather tiresome? I'm not even sure why Gamespot post trival crap like this anymore. It's the same old same old week after week. The sad thing is a statement like this isn't even exclusive to the gaming community. It could be substituted to infer to any number of industries. Here's looking forward to some news of interest.

And by 'innovation' Sony really means "ways that will encourage consumers to buy the other products we make."

Now I will say that they are doing right by offering the concept of purchasing a game on PS3 and get it for the Vita for free. That is kind of innovating. Imagine if Nintendo did that!

@Bl4KD37H Ugh, no. Greed is part of business, Do you think they make these games because they like to make gamers happy or something?

They make games because they think it will make them money. A good game will sell (in theory) a lot of copies. Look at Minecraft. Great game, no advertising, and they made a metric ton of cash.

I agree, Medievil was an epic game. all this talk about "innovation" just leads me to believe we're gunna be touch-screening and waving our hands about, picking up the ps4 and tilting it to turn a corner in a racing game, all of that is about as appealing as dying in a fire. instead of innovating, and changing how we play games, they should focus more on changing the games.

@zo70 huh, did you just suggested him to buy xbox cause ps3 is for casual gamers? what about that shiny black camera lurking from top of tv, something ms is shoveling our throats?

I would suggest to go for inexpensive pc, that can play games before 2008 and nice indie games off steam. trust me you don't want to play any latest pc games with all that always online and DRM nonsense.
