Industry must innovate and evolve to thrive, says Sony

@zo70 @KillzoneSnake LittleBigPlanet 1+2 are freaking masterpieces and the single most creative games ever made. If you think they're bad, you don't deserve to be a gamer. Not to mention ModNation is a complete blast, and PSAS and LBPK are going to be awesome as well. And don't act like we don't get our fair share of hardcore games as well. Xbox has no exclusives beyond Halo and Gears.

No sh!t Jim Ryan. How about you stop making sh!tty "cinematic" games that don't last longer than 4 hours and go back to make games Medievil?

Really? Innovate and evolve? More like stating the obvious but why are we the gamers being told this?

It's Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo that need to look at themselves closely and think ahead, look at how the PC has changed over the last 10 years, so much change that we are losing track. Motherboards, Graphics Cards, Audio, Monitors etc you name it are constantly developing but Consoles just feel they are being updated.

Some good progress but its not the same progress as PC, consoles are lagging behind and we've known this for years.

I do agree, but how much. Companies may talk the need to innovate and evolve, but they need to approach it the right way. Any missteps can have damaging effects to their business and their image.

If you don't like Sony or PlayStation, sell your PS3, don't buy Vita/PS4, go play Xbox and their exclusives, which by the way, Witcher and Minecraft are not included, and they exist in the PC... And let us enjoy the best exclusives on the market.

But believe me when I tell you Sony isn't going down anytime soon...

Surprisingly honest from a Sony exec, one of those who potentially has the most to lose from changes in the industry. I just wish more publishers felt that way.

He speaks the truth. The reality is without inovation publishers will just blame the hardware and claim that they need new hardware. Well why the heck don't they try something different with what the hardware that's available to them now? Common developers. Use your nogins and think outside the box. You've got teams of people. Let them try stuff and see what they can come up with. Even if what they come up with may not be used in the next game they work on. The knowledge gained from something they might come up with may prove useful later down the line or in another game entirely.

I think they just need to stop worrying about pretty graphics and put some effort into the game play and story aspects of games because lately no ones been really trying. I miss the days when quality entertainment was top priority

You guys need to realize that Graphics and Tec alone c tech can only go so far and next gen isn't gonna cut it without innovation and creativity. Sony's right and hopefully they do something instead of just talking. say what you will but these reasons are why the Wii U WILL succeed, because it's not just focusing on Better graphics or tech and is innovating in the way we play for better experiences. Sony's Wonderbook is a good idea for it's purpose and shouldn't be mocked either

Nintendo has been right all this time, if consoles want to stay around they have to offer more than just graphics. There's no way a $300~$400 closed-box could ever compete against PCs in terms of cutting-edge technology (and if the price is higher than that you'll have a tough time selling it), consoles have to innovate in ways that PCs cannot (answer: user interfaces!). I know that PC gaming has been doing well lately thanks to the rising popularity of Steam, but to me it's unnatural having to do more than just connecting a little box to a TV and pressing ON just to play a game. If you want a powerhouse go ahead and buy a high-end gaming computer, but don't bitch about it when all the good games are done for the smaller, less powerful system. The idea of videogames having hollywood-like production values is ambitious and noble, but it's economically unrealistic to believe that the industry can survive on games built on that goal alone. Also, Sony needs to stop doing things with their machines that they weren't built with in mind, it's bound to fail. Things like PSMove and Cross-connection between PS3/Vita will NOT be universally embraced unless the console was built specifically to take advange of that, like the Wii did and now WiiU will do.

Welp, at least they're doing more than Microsoft. I can't remember the last new IP they made that wasn't for the Kinect.
