Industry must innovate and evolve to thrive, says Sony

PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan says "no entertainment industry can just carry on the way it was," adding the walled garden model is breaking down.

The gaming industry must innovate and evolve if it wants to flourish, according to PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan. Speaking to MCV, the executive sounded off on the varied trends in the industry today.

Innovation and evolution are keys to a healthy industry, Ryan says.
Innovation and evolution are keys to a healthy industry, Ryan says.

“It is great that the industry evolves and goes in different directions,” Ryan said. “No entertainment industry can just carry on the way it was. For our industry to thrive and prosper it has to evolve and it has to innovate."

Ryan also explained that he believes closed platforms are "breaking down a bit" as a result of the rise of connected devices. He noted that the PlayStation 2 and PSP were not proper connected devices, and the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are.

“This is new ground for us," he said. "It didn’t seem it at the time but these walled gardens are actually nice, cosy places, and we are now going out into the big bad world where there are no rules. We are trying to set those rules."

The executive said Sony is being forced to "reset" much of its thinking, noting the company has been pushing the original PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 "basically the same way," and this was a mistake.

"And then all of a sudden we are like ‘You have to forget that and think differently,’” he said.

A year ago, Deus Ex converted me from an online shooter junkie to an artistic-game lover. Sony is constantly working on innovative projects like The Last of Us and Beyond, and for that reason they will always have my loyalty as well as my wallet. We need more artistic, story-driven games like DX3, where the shooting mechanic is just in the background.

So, Sony, how could you say this when you recycle God of War's and Uncharted's formula over and over again in your exclusive games, as well as re-release versions of your old games with all DLCs included? And guess what, Beyond will recycle from Heavy Rain, and the final version of The Last of Us will be just like Uncharted, but more fluent and "realistic" (remember when Uncharted itself said it'd be realistic?). The ONLY TRUE innovative title you're making right now is Tearaway, and the best "innovative" project of yours is Project Discovery, which is basically steal other people's ideas under your wing and making it real. When you make something like remote controlling objects with your PS4 and enabling automatic routines for an inteligent house, then we'll talk.

@mat989 Sony is way more innovative than Microsoft and Nintendo at this point in time. Sure they continue old IP's as a fan service, but what about Flower, Journey, Heavy Rain, Papa & Yo, Demon's Souls, 3D Dot Game Heroes, LittleBigPlanet the list goes on. Beyond WILL recycle from Heavy Rain, but that's not a bad thing because Heavy Rain was one of the most innovative masterpieces in the last decade. Also what about The Unfinished Swan and Ni No Kuni? Don't forget the underdogs. Stop thinking badly of Sony just because you don't play PS3.

@mat989 So because Beyond and Last of Us use the same engine as the other two, they're the same game? You're gonna miss out on a lot of good games.

Problem with innovation is that you need the technology to support the innovation if not its just a gimmick hence Kinect... or Wonderbook by the way does anyone notice that we are still using the EyeToy wich is older than my grandma!!??? I mean come on already my Iphone has a better quality feed back system, Until they start creating better tech to go along with innovation its not really anything new. We need that Quantum Leap in tech in order to have the wow factor.

"Innovation" is a wide idea, so far I don't like how the industry is innovating, so I take this word with plenty of skepticism when it comes from developers or publishers. They might innovate in ways that screw us while it makes them rich.

While this sounds good on paper they still make games similar to NintendoMario Kart& SSBB like LBPKarting & PSASBR even if they add a few tweaks here an there we can barely call that innovating. Not to mention bringing alot of PS2 to PS3 in HD format. :P

@servb0ts LBPKarting is going above and beyond what Mario Kart has done. In just the Beta, a player used the level creator to change it from car gameplay to a Helicopter flying over a city. LittleBigPlanet 1+2 themselves were ginormous steps forward in video game creativity and innovation. As far as Playstation All Stars goes, sure it's a lot like Smash Bros, but the Sony fanbase has requested a Playstation Smash Bros since the start of PS2.

I really believe Sony and Nintendo are trying to push game ideas and concepts into different directions. Especially Sony, Beyond, Last of us, they are taking chances for the end of the PS3 cycle pushing into the next. Just wish this cycle would have ended this year.

Tired of this lip-service BS.

If innovation is the way forward then stop talking about it and start doing it.

These gaming companies say that lot at the moment but when I actually see them working on that, that is when I will believe them.

Hmmm I could swear Nintendo started talking about this in 2004...During the DS launch and first hints at the "revolution" as the wii was called...

GameSpot, when someone in the games industry makes a comment, it doesn't always constitute a news story. All it does is incur angry reactions from gamers who a) think that individual people and the corporations they work for are the same thing (in this case, they think Jim Ryan = Sony Corp.) and b) gamers who think that somehow they know better than those who actually work in the industry.

@jagcivtec It's not just that, though. It's gamers who think that the entire industry should succumb to their demands (opinions).

@Spartan_418 Agreed, but I think consumer feedback is very very important to the industry, or at lest it should be, but quite is not. Most of the complaints I have towards particular products are not based on technical issues or the nature of the product, but rather on bad decisions made by the people making the product.

Things that you just ask yourself: Why the hell would they do it that way??? when it's just absurdly obvious it would have been perfect the other way. That happens a lot in games. They make the dumbest decisions and screw a potentially great game. Or change something that was great and make it terrible, and you ask, WHY??

That tells me many leading the industry don't have a clue about what they're doing. Take for example Mercenaries 2. Why did they make weapon accuracy so terribly retarded when it was great in Mercs 1? It was a decision made by a jerk that should have never been in a game studio. Among other horrible decisions made.

It wasn't a bug or technical issue, it was decided to be designed so. That's why I say gamers are the experts, not the people working at the industry. A gamer would have killed the game before sending it out for retail with those horrible features, included by design, not by mistake.

@Spartan_418 @jagcivtec The problem is most times these individuals comments expose a certain mindset in the industry and in some cases they say stuff that just plain shouldnt be said.In General I just feel People in certain positions like a Lead director or Ceo should know better than to shoot off at the mouth in the media saying ignorant things..

@IanNottinghamX @Spartan_418 jeez if the developers had to appease everyones demands they would either have to makes games come in a 5 disc set to cram all the stuff in people want or make a bunch of different versions lol

@jagcivtec You missed the main point I was trying to make, though perhaps I should have phrased it a bit better.

What I'm trying to say is this: It's not fair that every single time someone in the industry makes a comment, gamers rage and accuse them of hypocrisy, because of something a publisher has done. Gamers fail to understand that these comments come from individual people, often developers, who are at the lowest end of the totem pole, not the corporate CEOs who ask for day-1 DLC, online passes, and other money gouging schemes.

@Spartan_418 hmmm... well, again, we are the consumers of the product so we have the right to demand. I support all the whiners who are not easily satisfied by the industries tricks and gimmicks.

The directions the industry is taking: Day one on disc DLC, Low quality games with plenty of bugs, Gameplay abandoned for cinematic events, Abused "Aliens vs Humans" themed games, Abused recycling in yearly sequels, Consideration of "used game banning", Consideration of "always online" gaming, etc, etc. They have to innovate alright, by doing a tight turn and changing direction.

@damodar_thade Sucker Punch is the only one of Sony's studios I have any respect for (of those whose games I've played). Sly Cooper was a decent and creative game. Naughty Dog, however, hasn't done anything worth playing since Crash Bandicoot.

So multiplayer is the future? Well, sure most games are fun to play with friends. But I still can't wrap my head aroud the thought of playing God Of War, Devil May Cry and Assassin's Creed in multiplayer, in the main game I mean... Those are experiences I believe need to be done by yourself.
