Infogrames losses down

Atari parent reports losses are down over the same period last year, but so are group revenues, profits, and sales.

The latest numbers are in from Infogrames, which is today reporting its unaudited figures for the first half of its current fiscal year, April to September 2007.

First, the good news: Operating loss was reduced by €7.6 million ($11 million) from the same period last year to €29.3 million ($43.3 million).

Next, the bad news: Group revenues were €91.2 million ($135 million) during the first half, a decline of 13.6 percent from last year's €105.5 million ($156 million).

Sales in the US were particularly affected, and revenue in the country fell 62 percent over last year, although the US accounts for only 16 percent of the group's total.

Gross profit for the first fiscal half was €27.6 million ($40.8 million), down 30.3 percent from last year's €44.2 million ($65.4 million). Infogrames pointed out that no major releases from the company had come out during the first six months of its financial year, and that the games due in the second half are expected to change those figures next time around.

These games include Alone in the Dark, Jenga World Tour, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

Thank you Gamespot, Jeff Gerstmann needed to be fired. Simple as that. Jeff's unprofessionalism was a cancer that ate away at Gamespot's image. Good riddance. Hopefully Gamespot will improve now that the cancer (known as Jeff Gerstmann) is gone.

We've heard an unsettling rumor today from an anonymous tipster that longtime game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot has been let go. That wouldn't necessarily be newsworthy, but the conditions under which he was allegedly dismissed were. According to the source, Gerstmann was fired "on the spot" due to advertiser pressure for his review of Eidos' Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to Gamespot shows that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game has taken over the site very prominently, with backgrounds and multiple banner ads all pitching Kane & Lynch. Allegedly, publisher Eidos "took issue with the review and threatened to pull its ad campaign." Jeff's review was certainly less than glowing. He assigned the game a 6.0, otherwise known as "Fair" on the Gamespot scale. The game is currently enjoying a Metacritic score in the 65 to 69 range, which the site describes as "mixed or average reviews." According to our tipster, it wasn't necessarily the score that was reason for Gerstmann's rumored axing, but the "tone" of the review. Gerstmann has been no stranger to controversial reviews, as his scores of 10 for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 8.8 for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess had sensitive internet users up in arms. It's now possible that many bitter fanboys may have had their wishes for his firing granted. As our tipster points out, if the rumor is true, it could point to a distressing precedent at Gamespot and parent company CNet. "As writers of what is supposed to be objective content, this is our worst nightmare coming to life," wrote the tipster. Our efforts to confirm the story with Gamespot haven't proved successful. Our current requests with PR, Gerstmann and other CNet contacts have either gone unanswered or yielded a "no comment." << LINK REMOVED >>

Jeff Gerstmann needed to go. Ever since Jeff G. took over as the EIC of Gamespot, Gamespot has gone to crap. Jeff Gerstmann was unprofessional and aweful. Good riddance. Hopefully Gamespot will improve now that the cancer (known as Jeff Gerstmann) is gone.

They really let Jeff go? He and Greg were my favorite reviewers. Aw, this just makes me sad. What a bunch of bull. No one can bring to this site what Jeff could. He was amusing, cynical, and funny as heck. I'm all around disappointed today with Gamespot. At least they still have Alex Navarro, but who knows how long that will last if this Kane and Lynch stuff is anything to go off of.

Change the headline to: CNET losses up. Change all occurences of Infogrames in the article Gamespot. Change all occurences of reduced to increased. Then delete the last two paragraphs. Now you have a fairly accurate description on how Gamespot/CNET will fare over the coming 12 months.

I agree Mangy, but without all the caps. There is an odd coincidence with the review and Jeff's departure. In the past I disagreed with some of his reviews but that's their job and they can't be liked by all. However, it seems that good reviews can be influenced by advertising budgets. The Kayne and Lynch game got bad reviews all round for the most part. In fact, I think Jeff was generous with the 6.0

"These titles include Alone in the Dark, Jenga World Tour, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3." With a game lineup like this how could they possibly be loosing money? I'm already getting my tent ready to camp outside my local EBgames in anticipation. I'll be one of the first people in the world to take a block from the middle and put it on top on my DS!!!

As much as I dislike being unsupportive to a company, I still don't like what they've done with Atari. They bought it out on its last breath but now it isn't even Atari anymore, it's just a name and a mask worn to make it seem like Atari. I'd rather have seen Atari take their bullet and die than painfully writhe like a vegetable.
