Insomniac Sends A Message To Fans Following Sony Acquisition

"It feels more like a homecoming."

Insomniac Games has sent a message to fans following the announcement that Sony Interactive Entertainment has purchased the developer.

"Today we announced that Insomniac has a new home," says Insomniac CEO Ted Price. "It feels more like a homecoming though. We've collaborated with Sony for more than 20 years--spanning all four PlayStation consoles, 20 total games and six franchises. We still work closely today with many of the same Sony teammates as we did when we released the original Spyro the Dragon in 1998."

Now Playing: Sony Now Owns Insomniac Games - GS News Update

The Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance franchises have all been exclusive to PlayStation consoles, including last year's Marvel's Spider-Man. The only outlier is Sunset Overdrive, an Xbox One exclusive from 2014.

No Caption Provided

"The decision to join forces with Sony extends far beyond familiarity," the message continues. "Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people's lives. As we look ahead to our future, we know that joining the WWS family gives us the best opportunities to fully achieve that vision on a much larger scale. Further, we believe that Sony shares a similar vision to positively impact players' lives, their employees' lives and the games industry at large.

"So today merely marks the beginning of a new chapter in our studio's growth and evolution. We're excited to put Insomniac in the best position to deliver fresh experiences for our fans for many years to come. Our structure and approach will remain intact across both Burbank and Durham, NC studios, and we will continue to cultivate our unique culture.

"It’s been a crazy ride for sure. Now, we’re ready for the next phase of our journey, and can’t wait to explore new worlds with our Sony family and loyal fans."

Sony recently explained why it decided to buy Insomniac, with Sony Games chairman Shawn Layden saying, "We felt that this was the time to formalize the relationship."

The upcoming Marvel Avengers game stomps all over Insomniac Spider-man game. In fact Insomniac's game looks quite tame by comparison.

Meh, no biggie for me. Other than Sunset Overdrive which I got free from XBLG, I haven’t played any of their games. Not really my style of gaming.

To be honest, I am surprised Sony didn't acquire them back in the PS2 era with all the Ratchet and Clank games they were making.

@USDevilDog: My assumption has always been that they have tried, but Ted Price always refused. I know from past interviews that he likes his team having independence and working on their own things. For example, he originally refused making a Marvel game because it wouldn't be their own IP. It wasn't until he brought it up in a meeting with him team that and they said they were interested that he went back to Sony.

@TrueLink: That actually might be the case. The good thing is that Sony has a tolerance for quirky projects -- I don't think Insomniac will lose too much creative freedom after this acquisition.

FFS we all know it's just because they paid them a lot of money, but no, they made Spiderman for PS4 and they're hot stuff so they get to sit on their pedestal and make it out like it's this big thing and they're doing it for artistic vision and relationships.

Money. They were paid money to make games for PS4 only.

They make games not cure cancer lol . Just full of themselves. Personally i don't care as anyone into gaming has a Switch , PS4 and Xbox one and or decent PC anyway. This is meaningless beyond pretend console wars brought about by sites such as IGN and Gamespot taking fictitious sides.

Personally i couldn't stand Spiderman with it's fake web slinging and interfected animations to make you think you are controlling the character fully to do stunts etc anyway. Give me Spiderman 2 any day with it's proper web slinging where skill was needed.

@deviltaz35: "...anyone into gaming has a Switch , PS4 and Xbox one and or decent PC anyway" - Seriously?

You seem to think that nobody can be really into gaming if they don't have unlimited funds. Somebody needs to rethink their worldview a little bit.

I agree that console wars are one of the most idiotic things in gaming history, similar to marvel vs. dc just a marketing tool...but come on...some people can just about afford one gaming system but love to play games just the same (not that that should any criteria to be part of the community anyway)

I know why. Because they dropped an awesome game on XB1 that nobody bought because they only like Halo, Gears, and Forza, with the occasional Borderlands.

M$ gets it, that’s why they don’t waste their time with anything else.

@bat725: That and it was incredibly boring after about 20 mins. Spiderman was just as boring though so i never saw why anyone thought that was any big deal either.

Most open world games this side of The Witcher 3 just don't hold up and are too repetitive.

Have nothing against Insomniac other than they are up themselves 'Making experiences that will be remembered for years to come ' lol They are not CDPR no matter how hard they try and they are the only current dev worthy of that sort of description along with possibly Obsidian both of which easily make games that can last hundreds of hours with truly unique worlds.

This is completely different to having countless money thrown at you by Sony to support comic book character games.

Unfortunately Ratchet and Clank falls into the repetition category far too often too even though the characters work well in the cut scenes. Not much enemy variety and there is only so much bolts to collect before it all gets samey and boring.

Hopefuly this means a new ratchet and clank game. Or even porting all the classics over. Thats the major flaw I have with PS4, your extremely limited with how you can play the series. All you have is the reboot, the spinoffs, crack in time and nexus. None of the classic PS2 titles and even tools of destruction are available in any form. And without a PS now subscription the only game you have access to is the reboot.

Was kind of surprised they never ported the ratchet and clank classics around the time they ported the jak and daxter games to the PS2 section of the store.

Everybody is getting bought up. At this rate, Sony and Microsoft are going to own every major studio except CDPR and a couple of others. I guess we're going to see a LOT of console exclusives next gen. I was beginning to think that at my age, I can probably start getting away with just having an Xbox or PS + my PC and Nintendo. Apparently not. Looks like I'll be buying all 3 until I'm too old to hold a controller if Sony and MS really start pushing for exclusivity for so many games. At least these guys were already pretty much exclusive to Sony anyway. I just hope Sony and MS continue to take a hands off approach and let all these studios do what they want. Just give them buckets of cash and let them do their thing.

@jcrame10: Yeah, there's a plethora of developers out there. That doesn't make them good. MS and Sony have been buying up good studios. Most of the independent developers are shovelware. Obviously there will still be plenty of multiplat games. That wasn't my point. My point was, both PS and Xbox are going to have so many developers making exclusive content that you will have to own both or miss out on a lot of games. Thought that was obvious. Guess not.

It really is pretty strange that Sony didn't acquire them sooner. Sony has absolutely learned the value of exclusive single-player games this generation, and Insomniac made arguably the best one for the system.

@skyhighgam3r: I wouldn't say it's strange. Sony tends to be really picky about their studio acquisitions and while Insomniac has been making pretty good games for over two decades now, their titles were good enough to keep as console exclusives but not quite consistently "Sony" greatness. Marvel's Spider-Man was the absolute tipping point there though as they showed that they could punch with the heavy weights in the Sony studio stable in a huge way. Insomniac took that game and showed that they had a great understanding of the source material, and by extension what fans wanted out of it, how to translate that into a meaningful AAA experience, and just how far they've come with designing gameplay mechanics. That game held its own against some real titans last year. Couple that with the fact that support for Sunset Overdrive, a game that was actually very fun, was lackluster at best on the Microsoft side and finally finding a home with Sony became a no-brainer for everyone involved.

@playstationzone: Why would Spider-Man 2 or another Rachet and Clank game be out of the question? The very company that they exclusively made the games for just bought them and those games have been very lucrative for Sony. If anything they would be encouraged to make those games. The whole "explore new worlds" statement is probably referring to them having the freedom and leverage to work on new IP but they'll always be able to expand upon existing successful series, and in the case of Spider-Man, be expected to.

@horizonwriter: Not sure why Spiderman actually sold so much it looked great but played poorly with much of it just being copied from Arkham formula but not as fun. No ingenious puzzles like Arkham and the Riddler either. I guess maybe if you really loved Spiderman as a kid it would be great but the older Spiderman 2 had far better more controllable web slinging and that was back on original Xbox and PS2.

@deviltaz35: Actually, some of the combat concepts in the Arkham series were ripped from the idea of something like a spider-sense, down to the wavy lines that appear above your head when an attack is targeting you. They may appear similar on the surface (I thought the same thing at first) but Arkham games and Spider-Man's combat plays out very differently. Arkham combat is very much rhythm based with attacks actually queuing up behind the scenes, where as the combat found in SM is more chaotic, volatile and definitely faster paced, especially at higher difficulty levels, which is great because it suits the nature of SM's suite of powers and matches his fighting style in the comics. There are of course basic similarities but I went back and replayed Arkham Knight right after I got the platinum in SM and found that I had to switch up my combat style (again). Arkham games have never been hard but it was ridiculously easy and sluggish after playing SM. Bottom line is that Rocksteady just beat people to the punch on that style of combat system but Insomniac removed the rhythm aspect and made it their own with the SM.

Concerning puzzles, yeah... Spider-Man isn't a detective like Bats so having a larger puzzle aspect would have felt very out of place. Batman is all about brains to match the brawn and detective work via ridiculous deductive reasoning skills, but Spider-Man is far more about speed, agility and incredible movement with combat to match. Parker's a genius but he's strictly a science nerd and I'm happy with the limited science puzzles they had in the game, because ultimately when a dev has nailed the character down the way Insomniac did you really just want to get back to being Spider-Man.

As for the web slinging, there's definitely more control in Spider-Man 2, no doubt, but given the kinds of attacks you face in Marvel's SM while you're swinging and the new style of traversal, I don't think being that granular with the swinging controls would have been a good thing, especially with a lot of the timed challenges.

It kind of sounds like you were stuck on Arkham comparisons and that my have soured your experience with SM. Sure there are some surface-level similarities but try and put those down and give the game another look on its own merits.
