Insomniac 'seriously considered' Resistance 4

Developer says it could have made fourth entry in first-person shooter series but was wary of "franchise fatigue."

Insomniac Games "seriously considered" making Resistance 4, but ultimately decided to build an all-new franchise--Fuse--in an effort to avoid "franchise fatigue." President Ted Price revealed the news to GamesRadar, saying Resistance 3 represented a logical conclusion for the series.

No Caption Provided

"We decided to bring Resistance to a conclusion when we looked ahead and realized that Resistance 4, while possible and something we seriously considered, wasn’t going to be the right game for us at that time," Price said. "We wanted to do something new."

"One of the aspects of building franchises, and sticking with them for a long time is that even the team can get franchise fatigue. We had been pushing hard with Resistance from the beginning--which was a tough birth--to Resistance 3, which is a game we were all very proud of," he added. "With Resistance 3 it felt like we had capped off, or at least closed a major chapter in that franchise. So, a lot of the team was looking forward to doing something different."

2011's Resistance 3 is the most recent core entry in the series, though a PlayStation Vita game--Burning Skies--launched last year. The future of the series is unknown.

Insomniac Games' Fuse launches May 28 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Resistance 3 and 2 were some of the best shooters I have ever played. R3 definitely some of the best shooter-experiences I could think of. Extremely challenging and worth every moment.

Oh btw - the 3d is awesome!

Play some levels late game with rain dropping down - with 3D on, and look up directly at the rain: that some of the most immersive and amazing 3d effects I have ever seen, it literally look like rain is dropping right into your eyes or crossing over your peripheral vision!

@GunEye Resistance 2 was fantastic, but Resistance 3 was the worst shooter I've ever played. They tried to copy CoD and failed.

And Fuse was a pile of Crap, awful and that's not for trying hard to get into it.

I'd urge Insomniac to reinvigorate enthusiasm for Resistance for for PS4.

The franchise was bloody fantastic and had so much potential.

Love the Resistance series! hopefully they do make a Resistance 4 one day, R2 was my favorite, the campaign, multiplayer & co-op was just so much fun!, Resistance 3 was a huge difference to R2 but was still fun & i bet if they do make a R4 it would be just as good as the other 3!

I'd like to see them expand on the coop and multiplayer of R2 for the PS4 when it comes out, but I think the series needs a rest for a while to develop some new concepts. R2 coop was one of the best times I remember playing video games, and R2 MP is still fun. If R4 ever gets produced I will get it.

I couldn't even tolerate playing more than an hour of all 3 Resistance games because I felt it was such a generic feeling fps. Almost like it had no soul. I just got bored and lost all interest in playing really quickly.

@Vodoo I thought the first one was enjoyable but not great. The second one was so completely generic that I couldn't get enough interest to make it to the third one.

I liked Resistance 1 and 3 a lot because they let me carry a lot of weapons at the same time. Man, that was what ruined 2 for me. If they ever make Resistance 4, I hope they never get that wrong again.

R3 was very good, the people blasting it was nice, the series was good but I thought all the game underachieved slightly. I really wish they could have promoted the 1950's atmosphere more, that is what makes the games unique, but there were very few retro cues 95% of the time.

Ugh.... played the Fuse demo and found it to be rather....... ehh..... there have been quite a few demos that converted me from thinking a game was pretty generic to being pretty excited about it... the Fuse demo was rather the opposite. I went from thinking it could be a pretty cool idea to thinking it was rather generic. Aw well, I'll just check out Metacritic and then decide whether to grab it after it hits $10 or just let it slide.

Resistance 1 although it had its flaws got really good its a real shame people did not give the game a chance and were just comparing it to other games.

Resistance 2 was great... yeah there were some changes but the best part for me was always going up against the grims and how they came at you.

Resistance 3 was basically a technological version of what Resistance would be if Insomniac Games would have gone super duper hard core programming like Killzone 2 and 3 so for me I would prefer that Insomniac makes their current games and later come back to PS4 and make Resistance 4 a technological marvel of hardcore dev experience so they can really go all out which they would but of course franchise fatigue break will make them come back with more hard core ideas.

for the sake of the resistance name they made the right decision. its a shame more studios dont do the same and rest their prized assets so they dont go astray- like so many franchises do. i would love to see a next gen instalment of the series someday and it'll be all the better for taking that break.

@darkPSPfan @nightsinner 2 is the worst. It has every mechanic of shooters tried to death that thankfully isn't in 1 or 3 (health regen, only 2 weapons to swap).

Its a 2006 game!!! and stop compare every FPS with Halo , Halo is a crap only good in multiplayer, Resistance is totally different.

I think at the very least the original Halos are the standard for which all FPS will be compared to on Consoles. They did a lot right. Every shooter going forward will borrow from Halo. It is probably a bad idea that Halo is getting drivin into the ground at this point, but it will end up being a stop on the timeline of video game history. To say it is crap is to deny how important and influential it was. Other than diehard fans, other games like Resistance, Killzone, Gears of War will be forgot by history.

Personally after I played the Fuse demo I was pretty disappointed with it,I think a game set in the Resistance world like a prequel or spin off type game would've been a safer bet both profitability and quality wise.

I do agree that a franchise can get old if they overdue it like COD but Insomniac showed with Resistance it can make a hell of an FPS and even if they made a completely new FPS I think it would be a wiser move

It will be a real shame if that embarrassing Vita title ends up being the Resistance series' swan song... I vote Insomniac (or maybe even another Sony studio like Bend) should make another Vita Resistance game to make up for that Nihilistic piece of crap.

@ryogapower @lethargicdonkey if this were true then Hale would have a M1 Garand or something semi automatic instead of a M5A2 fictional assault rifle.

They do have to be a little careful with the Resistance franchise. Aside from the science-fiction elements the series has a very WWII feel, which is a setting that is already suffering its own fatigue in the gaming industry.

The ending to the 3rd entry was a bit inconclusive, probably to leave it open for a 4th, but it would be a shame to see it end on that note, especially because the entire history behind the series was put together so well and made to be really believable. what was pretty frustrating was the lack of reference to hale and his transformation.

I hope they do a 4th entry at some point to conclude what was a pretty amazing series but based on the sales of Resistance 3 its unlikely.

@lindenwilkinson SPOILER ALERT

I don't know man, 3 pretty much ended the war for good. However I think they could definitely mine the sidestories of the series more- the PSP game was really great, and it would've been nice if the Vita game lived up to AT LEAST Retribution.

@grey_fox1984 @lindenwilkinson it just all felt a little rushed to me but as you say there are so many stories which could be told inside the resistance universe, be a shame for it to go to waste! hopefully insomniac will push the boat out for next gen and start off strong as they did with ps3
