Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Is The Next, Very Different Naughty Dog Game

Sony's flagship studio is back again with a dazzling game reveal in an original sci-fi universe.

At The Game Awards, Naughty Dog introduced its next big game, and it's far different than anything it's done before. The game is called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and appears to be set in a far-flung but still very grounded science-fiction future.

The cinematic trailer showed the heroic bounty hunter, Jordan A. Mun played by Tatiana Gabrielle, receiving a call from a dispatcher and taking a job to the dangerous planet Sempiria. She dismisses concerns about people going there and never returning as superstition, and casts caution to the wind. We then see her taking off in her Porsche spaceship, and confronting a hulking robotic menace. Though the game didn't show combat or other gameplay footage, host Geoff Keighley noted it was all rendered in-engine.

In a separate post from Naughty Dog published alongside the debut, the studio revealed that it has been working on this project since 2020. The post notes that Jordan does in fact become stranded on Sempiria, and her story involves her attempts to be the first to escape the cursed planet in more than 600 years. The game is being scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and it sure looks like Kumail Nanjiani will be in it.

This marks Naughty Dog's first game since 2020's The Last of Us Part II. Since then, however, things have remained hectic for the studio, even outside of this project. In 2023, The Last of Us premiered on HBO as a live-action adaptation of the first game. The second season is scheduled to debut in 2025 and is said to adapt some, but not all, of the video game sequel's story, with a future season expected to further the story from there.

Originally, Naughty Dog was working on a multiplayer spin-off based on The Last of Us' Factions mode. The Last of Us Online was going to be a PvP game that would move the single-player's atmosphere and gritty combat into a multiplayer experience with live-service elements. The game was canceled two years ago and Naughty Dog said it would be staying focused on single-player games.

That trailer is so bad from start to finish, I legit thought it was a joke. Especially when I saw the Porsche logo. It's going to be an all time dumpster fire, I guarantee it.

Hm… looked great until it became goof. Adidas shoes and Porsche ship? Also, corny 80s vhs art direction on copy and that shitty robot looked yawn.

It feels like this game would have been cool if it was released 2020, not 5 years later when this aesthetic is over. Disappointed in ND. They always stayed away from gimmicks imo.

@nilsdoen: You do realize these 80s/90s products/brands are most likely connected to the character, right? You remember how Ellie collected nostalgic items from an era she hadn't gotten the chance to experience live? What if it's a similar situation with Jordan?

And you don't know much at all about the game, my dude. We've seen a short dialogue scene and one action sequence/clip.

@zalos: you do realise that the idea of having a character that is connected to 80s/90s products/brands is because it was en vogue to do so when the game began development 5 years ago?

@nilsdoen: And who decided loving 80s/90s products was only acceptable at a certain point in time? You?

The only thing that flew over anyone's head is the point of my last comment. You were mocking the brands and complaining about ND using gimmicks while you have no clue what they will mean in the context of the game itself.

@zalos: When you are selling products, there is no worse place to be financially or creatively than by the trail end of a large trend. Especially if you sell a premium product. This is not some quickly developed cashgrab junk meant to soak up the last crumbs from a few die hards out in the sticks.

time will tell if im being too 'elitist' here and if my bet is off with the timings. i hope im wrong.

regardless, your perspective is insular in completely irrelevant as critique of my point. if you are telling me that whats important to you is the cohesiveness of a character, thats fine. but thats not what you said.

As usual, I'll reserve judgement until I play it, but I don't particularly care for any of the character designs shown in this trailer.

Hope it's great. They probably can't afford two duds in a row in this climate.

@faithxvoid: Sounds like you're used to talking in an echo chamber and when you get any sort of pushback you whine about it and deviate instead of confronting the person and their argument head on.

Not too surprised, but still the whole "you post too much, I don't like it" comeback is so weak. Do better next time!

Haha Why are people so angry? This looks good, I really like the Cowboy Bebop/ Akira aesthetic. I've liked all of the ND games I've played so I'm excited to see more of this.

@midna: Because those people are incredibly sensitive, anti-social individuals. They are the anti-woke crowd that get upset over the smallest hint at something they don't like. ;) But, no worries, these loud, obnoxious voices do not represent the majority of gamers. More so, all of their complaints are easily shut down. The silliest of those being "I don't want politics in my video games", when there's been hundreds of games in history that have included politics in their stories (think of the MGS games, for example).

When they say that they don't want politics in their games, what they are actually saying is "I don't want politics I disagree with in my video games, because then it makes me think and I don't want to think, I just want to be spoonfed everything I already believe in, all day every day or else I'm uncomfortable".

You know what's a good solution for those people? Avoid the games that contain politics that they're too sensitive to contend with. That way they'd be happy and comfy, and we wouldn't have to hear them whine all the time anymore.

@zalos: You say that but somehow ignore the litany of games that push leftist ideologies that failed miserably. Let me refresh your memory.. Saints Row reboot, Dustborn, Dragon Age the Veilguard, Forspoken, Unknown 9, Star Wars Outlaws, Suicide Squad: KTJL.

This does not have a core fanbase like the TLOU did. This game may be critically acclaimed but don't be surprised if it underperformes.

@elderlord99:

What? I don't ignore those games. I just don't associate a game's success or failure to politics like you culture war-obsessed npcs. I'd be ashamed for my bias to be that transparent.

If those games were bad and failed to be loved by the vast majority of gamers, it's because they were poorly designed and were lacking on many fronts, not because they had characters with blue hair or pronouns. It's just awfully convenient for people like you to blame it all on that one element that gets your sensitive skin tingly in all the wrong ways.

If a game has a good story, great gameplay, fantastic music and visuals, etc., nobody will care about it having "woke" elements except you fellas, since you can't go one day without frantically worrying about the next piece of media that will dare mention or show something that resembles "wokeness".

It is sad. For you.

@zalos: It seems like you are ignoring the elephant in the room and at this point I'm not sure how you can continue to do that.

So do you think Dragon Age veilguard failed because it was a bad game? Or perhaps because it injected identity politics into a game where it didn't really belong. Could it be perhaps it was forced in that instance or is that impossible to do in your mind?

It was critically successful it was just a commercial failure. So if critics thought it was a good game why did it still fail?

I don't think seeing things for what they are is sad... activist have hijacked the game industry and are making games for like minded people... unfortunately I do not believe there is enough of you to support their 250 million dollar projects. At least that seems to be the case when looking at all the failures.

@elderlord99: I can't help but notice how you purposefully ignore the hugely successful pieces of media that have been heavily coded "woke", such as Baldur's Gate 3. Hmm. I wonder why? Oh wait, that wouldn't really work with the whole "go woke, go broke" slogan, would it? ;)

As simple as people like you want to make it sound (so that it fits with your agenda), there are a lot of factors at play when it comes to sales for any sort of media. In the case you just gave me (Dragon Age: Veilguard), I'd suspect the changes to the lore, the lackluster writing and gameplay, some franchise fatigue, and the diminishing reputation of Bioware played a much bigger part in its somewhat disappointing sales so far. Personally, I have enjoyed the Dragon Age games in the past, but I had almost no interest in getting this new one, and it certainly didn't have anything to do with "injected identity politics". But for individuals like you, there will always be a reason to put the blame on "woke politics". You just can't help yourself. It's like a virus has infected your brain and you just can't analyze anything anymore without being paranoid about colored hair and pronouns.

But yea, don't worry. There are more and more people becoming gamers every day, most of whom are not in your little paranoid club, and companies/developers that make great games will still have the success they deserve whether their projects contain "woke" coded elements, as you would put it, or not.

Have a good day, sir.

@zalos: I ignore it because it doesn't apply. When people use the word " woke" to describe entertainment it generally means " progressive agendas shoved into the core of the experience at the expense of something else". BG3 never did this. The core of the experience in BG3 is " player choice" and it allows you to make those choices regardless of how offensive they may be. Do you see the difference?

The funny thing you mention they changed the lore as being an issue in DA Veilguard but fail to acknowledge that they implemented identity politics at the expense of the lore." Which is why it's labeled as "woke".

Hopefully you learned something and if not it doesn't really matter. The industry is taking notice and there are not enough gamers like you to keep these activist projects funded. You can continue to ignore the elephant in the room but just about everybody else is starting to notice. Enjoy the games that started development in 2020 because I think you will be in for a rude awakening in the coming years 😉.

@elderlord99: Yes, BG3 includes all the elements that your kind would qualify as pushing an agenda. It literally is filled to the brim with diversity and allows an endless amount of choices. Meanwhile you complain about a few elements being included in some other games like DA Veilguard, as if those few things were the reason the game wasn't a resounding success for everyone across the board.

My dude, there's literally nothing you can say that could make me learn anything of substance. You use the same buzz words and the same arguments that everyone else from your little anti-woke gaming bubble repeat ad nauseum. All your arguments have been crushed over and over by people smarter and wiser than you.

As for you insinuating that individuals like you represent the majority of gamers... you must be literally living in a different reality. Hahaha! Most gamers don't give a crap about any of the culture war stuff. They just enjoy the games that they find fun and appealing to them. Luckily, people like you will slowly become more and more of a minority as new gamers join the fray.

Maybe I'll see you again in the future, when this game wins a ton of awards and sells millions of copies. I'll have fun seeing you cope with all of it in the same usual ways. ;)

@zalos: It's not the elements that matter it's how it's implemented into the game. Regardless I can tell at this point I'm talking to a drone with the mental IQ of a toddler as my entire point went right over your head.

Buddy you have no arguments and the mental gymnastics you have to pull to deny the obvious is hillarious. First you claim Veilguard failed because it was a bad game and then you say I'm in a bubble. If it was a bad game why does it have a 80+ on metacritic? The only people in a bubble are game journalists and activist shills like yourself that are now completely irrelevant. Your type shilled for that game for months until you realized it was going to fail and now it failed because it was bad? 🤣🤣? Ask yourself why was it bad? Same with Concord. It failed because it was a $40 game in an oversaturated genre.. yet somehow you clowns ignored the low player count during the FREE open beta. Then Marvel Rivals comes out and stomps every game in the genre into oblivion showing that the genre was never oversaturated. The reason it failed was because activist like yourself pushed those god awful character designs and the general public just said " no thanks" !

Again this is your lack of critical thinking again. You're right in that the majority of gamers don't give a shit about culture war stuff. What the majority of gamers do is they see those terrible character designs and simply just don't buy the game. The majority of gamers have never seen the trailer and have no clue what the game is. But of those who have the majority do not like it. Because as far as " core gamers" go activist like yourself are an extreme minority. You can literally look at the ratios on the trailers for all the trash you shill for.. your side is completely irrelevant and couldn't support a 50 million dollar project much less a 250 million dollar project ( which is likely what this will cost).. The only chance you have is if it's integrated into an already successful IP and in that case you may be able to fool the existing fanbase for awhile but unfortunately they already played that card with TLOU 2 and lost half their audience in the process.

It may win a ton of awards but it won't sell millions of copies at least not enough to make its budget back. The hate campaign is in full effect and the average gamer is just going to hear that it's trash, see that main character and go back to COD or Fortnite. Then I can hear you cope and tell me " because it was a bad game " 🤣🤣.

That's if Gamespots still here by the time this game releases which is also unlikely.🤣

@elderlord99: *pats Elderlord99 on the head* It's ok, my dude. I'd love to go back and forth with you for the rest of time, but I don't think there's a point. My last comment pretty much summed up what I think of your "arguments" and what I think I'll learn from talking to you.

I'll just leave you with the following line of questioning, so maybe you can self-reflect. Why are you so giddy about these games "failing", as you call it, and feel the need to spill so much negativity about them?

That's what I never get with individuals like you. Why not use your time to talk about the games you actually love and encourage the people behind them? It's like you gain pleasure from shitting on others' works.

Anyway, I'm out.
