Interplay buys FreeSpace IP for $7,500

THQ and Volition formerly held intellectual property; Interplay now holds space simulation trademark.

Interplay Entertainment Corporation, the former publishers of the Fallout and Baldur's Gate series, bought the FreeSpace intellectual property from THQ and Volition for only $7,500.

Will the FreeSpace series make a comeback?
Will the FreeSpace series make a comeback?

According to a court document on the KCC court documentation site, THQ and Volition relinquished the rights to the space simulation IP to Interplay, effectively making it the current trademark holder. The agreement was filed on June 4, but was made effective on May 10.

Volition developed both Descent: FreeSpace titles in 1998 and 1999 under the publishing label of Interplay. Publisher THQ bought Volition in 2000, where the developer made the Red Faction and Saints Row series. Following THQ's bankruptcy, Koch Media bought Volition this year.

Don't get too excited people. Interplay doesn't _make_ anything. They are a zombie holding company for valuable IPs. If THQ kept it then it does us no good. If Volition or (their new parent) Koch Media owned it then there would be some snow-cone-in-hell chance of seeing a new Freespace. But Interplay? Not much better than dead THQ owning it. Nothing good will come from this.

Does this IP includes the right to sell the game or only the possibility to use the trademark? In any case, it's dirt cheap.

It's only bought because somebody thinks it can make a comeback! ... there must be plans for it.

So cheap. I would not be surprised if the administrative costs, lawyers, etc. etc., needed to do this deal actually cost more than $7500.

What an awesome game that was. It SO needs to make a come back! Of course, people will try to say it's ripping off Mass Effect, but Mass Effect ripped this off! Loved killing Shivans!

Wow! $7500 for the best space sim franchise to ever exist! (kudos to Wing Commander, but EA drove that into the ground). That would be an awesome follow-up - alas, I doubt there is any 'space' left for more than one franchise after Star Citizen comes out though.

@raahsnavj There are a shit-ton of space games coming out.

It would be nice to see another FS, but jsut because it has the name does not mean it will be anywhere near as good.

Can't wait for Star Citizen! I have been a backer since Nov. 2012.

Holy sh!t. Can it be. Will there finally be a true Freespace 3 soon to be released? No game will be more anticipated than this game for me. That's what the gaming industry needs more than anything right now. There's plenty of shooters, rpg, rts, mmo, but there's been a dearth of true space sims. Hopefully, this will revive the genre.

@plm3d_basic PRobably not, Interplay is low on funds and were quite close to going under themselves a while back.

They recently tried to do a crowd funding for a new fallout like game but it didnt' go so well either.

FS 2 <---Best Space simulator EVER. THE END.

I hope that they make a FS 3 since the story is far from complete. The story for FS 2 was freaking amazing! Go to Gog.com for those who haven't played the game yet. Its definitely a MUST PLAY!

Not bad but you guys still owe us a second Rock N' Roll Racing game! It's long overdue. And no, Red Asphalt was a horrible substitute!

Fucking love FS 2.
Especially with the new texture updates. Great to see so much mod support for a game older then the average Gamespot user.

@fatee Freespace 2 OPen has some tremendous mods made for it. Wing Commander Saga is their best mod I have ever played of any game.

And they have Battlestar G and Babylon 5 mods as well.

@blue_francis14 sounds like a good idea to me, everyone wins when gamers who are passionate about the game they are backing being able to influence the games creation. It tells how much of a want there is for the game, and if nobody backs it then they know its not worth putting effort in.

@blackothh @jyml8582 But.. but.. they could have made a FB-tablet-always-net-connected-P2W version of Freespace!!!

Now we'll never know what could have been..

Yes: Now announce a new Freespace game please.

It really is time for more serious space shooters; with that and Star Citizen coming out it will make for a brighter future of games.

Whoa, Interplay is still around? I had no idea they still existed. I used to play their adventure games back when they used to make stuff like Out of This World, Flashback, and Blackthorne.

Well shit, I was hoping Koch would pick this up since they have Volition.

Interplay hasn't been relevant to gaming since for a long time now and I doubt they can do a worthwhile sequel.

@MAD_AI A lot of people will agree that if Volition isn't doing it, it is not Freespace.
