iPhone 5 preorders hit 2M in 24 hours

Cupertino company says preorders for newest smartphone topped two million during first day, doubling previous record held by iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 is off to a hot start. Apple announced today that preorders for the new smartphone, which went live September 14, topped 2 million in 24 hours. This is more than double the previous record of 1 million held by the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone is selling well. Surprise?
The iPhone is selling well. Surprise?

Apple said demand for the iPhone 5 has exceeded initial supply, and though the "majority" of reserved units will be delivered to users on September 21, many are slated to arrive in October.

If the iPhone 5 is to topple another iPhone 4S sales record, it will need to sell more than 4 million units at launch this weekend.

The iPhone 5 was announced last week during a presentation in San Francisco, California. The device is the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever made, and will be available at launch starting at $199 and scaling up to $399 for a 64GB model.

Ive replied to a few posts but the sheer vitriol from some of the assholes in the below comments just makes me want to summarise in one post.

This model doubled the amounts of preorders compared to the earlier model which almost doubled the amount of preorders for the model before that. I'm seeing a pattern here and I'm not sure it's a wholly good one. I'm gonna hold onto my first mobile phone (already +5-years old) and see how far along the current models are when I finally need to get a new one. My PC game backlog (and I only play PC games) also prevents me from playing the latest games and needing a newer computer to play them, so I won't upgrade from my current gaming laptop until five years ahead of now. Silently protesting this "gotta have the latest"-fanatism FTW!

I don't understand why people are so hell-bent on getting the latest gadget just months after they got a previous new one...

As a Galaxy S3 owner it makes me glad to be a free thinking individual, able to make make my own choices without the need to be spoon fed or told what is best for me and what I can or can't do with my phone.

If you wanted to buy a car and you were told that the boot had been locked shut and that you couldn't use it because the manufacturer didn't want you to would you still buy that car?

Why? I actually have an iPhone (3GS) but when they unveiled the iPhone 5 I was quite confused because it doesn't really have anything new except for a bigger screen.

@RikusTwilight Wireless charging sounds nice. Facebook and Twitter integration is actually built directly into the new IOS. As for an office suite, my mail/ cal does the trick for me. Anything outside of that, I prefer to use my laptop for business related matters. As for NFC, I had to look it up just to see what you were talking about. From what I read, it seems that the tech still has a way to go for users to take full advantage of it. I guess I need to hear more compelling reasons, because those aren't relevant enough for me to make the switch. You said "Lumia 920 beats the iphone in all areas"... and you only listed 3 areas (one of which isn't valid) and 2 other elements that don't seem very compelling.

I can't believe people buy into these greed driven tactics and keep buying new phones every year. I refuse to own a cell phone or support the social addiction they bring.

@DarthLod I agree. Not to rip on Apple fans specifically, but buying the newest version of a product every year is stupid. I know every phone maker, every market has fanboys that do this. No one is saying that only Apple fans do this; all I am saying is that from first-hand observation, Apple fans are by far the worst offenders.

They're not buying a product, they're buying a label that they can show off to their peers. It's no different than buying designer clothes.

@Roxas_27 @DarthLod Why on earth do you think people who are buying an iPhone are doing it every year???

I upgrade mine every two years once the contract is up. The money I get back from the "old" iphone covers more than two thirds the price of the new one.

Why would I want to do it every two years? Because I can.

@Roxas_27 @DarthLod Why do you instantly presume that if I buy a new iPhone, my intention is to "show it off to my peers"? I know a lot of people like you...you see someone pull up in a flashy car and automatically accuse that person as being pretentious, spoiled or a "show off". While that person doesn't even notice you and gives you 5 bucks to park his car.

@Roxas_27 @DarthLod You keep avoiding my initial argument. Your OP said "They're not buying a product, they're buying a label that they can show off to their peers"...in which I reply "get off your high horse". I'll buy an iPhone every month if I want, that's none of your business. What I don't like is your suggestion that iPhone buyers are only interested in showing them off to people like a clothing accessory. That isn't "fanboyism" speaking, it's common sense. All your other points may have some merit, but I don't really care.

@sireltonjohn @DarthLod "As for being "butthurt", I'm not the one expressing anger over Apple's success."

Neither am I. Apple is a company, doing what all companies do. I'm a fan of Sony, I'll admit, but I got a 30GB iPod video when it first came out and haven't looked back. At the same time, I felt no urge to buy the brand new iPod that followed it, because I have one that still works perfectly. Mindless consumerism is what I addressed in my very first comment that you replied to; how you got that I was singling out Apple from that is beyond me. Tone down the fanboyism a bit.

I don't even own a smartphone, and will not even consider buying one until my current phone explodes. I was able to afford a top-of-the-line phone years ago, and every year since, but I'm sure you can guess why I didn't buy one, right?

But yes, shame on me for still liking products that are 2+ years old, and for not needing a car worth $70,000+ just to make my life feel as though it has value. But if you absolutely need those slight changes to the iPhone, then sure, go support a company that I happen to support as well, that'll sure show me.

@Roxas_27 @DarthLod You have heard that joke before haven't you :-)

As for being "butthurt", I'm not the one expressing anger over Apple's success. I'd say you are the one that needs Preperation H.

I want the new iPhone (after waiting a couple months to read reviews, work out bugs, etc.) because I like them and because I can. I certainly am not trying to impress anyone with the purchase as you suggest. Not that I need to justify my reasoning to you or any scumbag Apple hater on this forum, but keep fighting the good fight I suppose. You teach those naughty consumers a lesson!

@sireltonjohn @DarthLod Oooh, a valet joke, never heard that one before.

Most people I know who own nice cars had them bought for them by their parents, and don't know the value of a dollar. I don't have anything against people who want to own nice cars, as I would like to own one too. However, my argument is against people who buy new versions of a product every year just to have it, so unless you've owned a BMW from every series or something similar, you don't fit into my argument's target audience, and therefore have no reason to be so butthurt.

Apple minions sometimes wonder why educated, aware people hate Apple and its products and its fans, why would someone care what people buy?

.

the reason for that is that it indicates that the our civilization hasn't improved ONE TINY FUCKING BIT in the mental department (or spiritual for that matter), at the very best it's stagnating.

.

because, if YOU CAN CONVINCE SOMEONE to pay 50% MORE for your inferior, pretentious little phone that cant even effectively compete with other apple phones

then that means that the average population is made up of dipshit dumbasses, that dont want to project their individuality one bit, that don't want to be treated liek intelligent consumers

people that just want to fit into that stereotypical, jeans wearing, consumer image. people that are utterly insecure about their self-image,

because when you're buying apple, all you're doing is buying a pre-packaged self-image for retards

and the media is party to blame for all the "free" advertisement Apple gets

__

yet these people... they'll still try to lecture you about the "corporates" and the "1%" and the "recession"

@Dragdar I don't hate apple, I just think their products are poorly designed. A lot of foolish people will never realize this. They simply just don't know any better, and will never know any better... ever.

The average person is an idiot... nothing new here. People are just as smart, or stupid since the beginning of time. The only difference now is education; however, education doesn't make you smarter.

Do a search on youtube for "'1984' Apple Macintosh Commercial". So fitting for the IPhone.

@adroge1 @Dragdar "I just think their products are poorly designed. A lot of foolish people will never realize this."

Apple's main selling point is the superior design of their products. If you're such an expert on industrial design you'll realise that it's you who is being foolish. Apple created the current design for the smartphone, and it is now a benchmark for the whole industry. The whole reason Samsung are being destroyed in court is because they copied it. And every other manufacturer is trying to get as close to Apple's design as possible without getting sued, which is a pretty clear admission that they all think Apple's design is superior. Face it, you are the average person.

@Slade968 @jellyman68 @adroge1 @Dragdar Boy have you got it wrong. Microsoft are releasing a rectangular tablet, same as Sony, Motorola and all the rest have with no issue from Apple.

Apple ripped Samsung a new one because Samsung took the pish. Google even warned them they were taking the pish. Samsung ignored them and got their ass handed to them in court.

@jellyman68 @adroge1 @Dragdar Just a little information. Apple sued samsung based on the fact that they used iphone's Rectangle design. THATS IT. Which is bullshit. What are other companies supposed to do, only release a phone that is oval or square? On the surface, its easy to agree with apple because the samsung galaxy was pretty much a rip off of the iphone but if you look at the actual court precedings/ruling and the vernacular used, that really wasn't it.

I agree that the Samsung Galaxy did rip off iphone in that it looks and behaves almost exactly like an iphone. But that is NOT what they were sued for.

Apple's constant effort to corner the market and not allow any phones to even resemble "their" rectangular shape doesn't do anything to further the market or phones in general. It inhibits creativity and competition.

As a sidenote, I bought the iphone 4 and still use it to this day and it has been a great phone. Do I plan on buying another apple product? Probably not

@Dragdar This is hilarious. You're so bitter and angry that somebody should buy an iPhone, and not the phone you think they should buy.

By the way, you're not educated. You know all the bad stuff about Apple, but you've yet to realise that all companies are just as bad as Apple.

And who cares about being "individual"? What does that even mean? Buying a phone that "only" 10 million people bought instead of buying a phone that 15 million bought?

You've just bought into the frivolous Apple hatred, and I guarantee you can't come up with one single reason to distinguish Apple from Samsung or any other smartphone manufacturer. They're all the same.

@grnionio I meant good as in quality not good willed or whatever it is you thought I said. And there isn't a high profile lawsuit between Apple and MS because MS aren't a threat right now, Samsung was becoming too big a threat in the mobile market so Apple went after them, they were the biggest threat to their dominance in the USA.

The result was a insanely biased decision, an american company, "fighting" on american soil, with american jurors that probably had iPhones in their pockets vs the big, bad Samsung from Korea. Not to mention that to put such a decision in the hands of 12 average Joes that know nothing of tech, patents, etc with nothing but a crash course on these things to go by is borderline retarded. The lawsuit should have been decided by organizations that know what the hek they're doing not by random (probably) biased jurors.

They don't try to overcome any competition? They've had lawsuits with Nokia,HTC,Kodak and Motorola just in the past few years, they're still paying royalties to Nokia for infringing on Nokia wireless patents. So yeah, they're trying to stifle competition and pointing the finger at others while they shamelessly steal tech themselves.

And please, Apple has been going up against MS for years and years, they're just not in each other's way right now. Let's see what happens if Windows 8 Mobile is a success and starts eating at Apple's market share, I'm thinking Apple lawyers will start scrambling to find something to base a lawsuit on. Here's a quick read about an old lawsuit between them: http://www.freibrun.com/articles/articl12.htm.

@Daian There are not "good companies". And I don't think that Apple tries to overcome any competition. They already had. 2mil in 24h. I don't care about the "good" companies who are getting hurt by the lawsuits, it's their responsibility to use their own technologies or license them. I haven't saw Apple and MS at the courts. Not for the Surface, not anything. And that's why Apple and MS are having an agreement related to design and stuff. So, if they wanted to avoid it, they were able to. And you shouldn't hate how corporations are working, that's their nature, numbers and business...

@grnionio It's like I've said before, nowadays they don't try to be better to overcome their competition, they try to stifle it through any means possible. That is hate worthy because good companies can go out of business that way which obviously has numerous implications.

@Daian Nothing in this level deserves hate. A murderer deserves hate, a raper deserves hate. Apple doesn't deserves hate because of a product they build and that you have, either way, no intension to buy. You can't hate something you can't afford or don't want to have. By "analyzing the situation and coming to the conclusion that the subject in question" it deserves to be criticised with valid arguments which are supporting this kind of criticism. Understand, please, that it's different to say "the iPhone 5 is a letdown, i'm not satisfied and the competition is better" and "I want to burn f*cking Apple down, they steal people, blah blah blah, I'm against the system and I'm a liberator! I even support Anonymous. Let's liberate the poor Apple slave-sheeps! Fiiire!" So yeah...
