iPhone 8 Release Date, Specs, And Price Revealed

Here's Apple's new iPhone 8.

At today's Apple Event in California, USA, the company revealed its new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The new devices will launch in the US on September 22, with pre-orders starting seven days earlier. iPhone 8 will start at $699/£699 for the 64GB model and $849/£849 for the 256GB model. The larger 8 Plus, meanwhile, will cost $799/£799 for 64GB and $949/£949 for 256GB.

The new device will include a new, faster chip and 12 MP dual rear cameras, and Apple said it has been designed with 3D apps and games in mind. Other features include AR functionality and wireless charging--simply place it on top of the charging device rather than plugging it in.

In addition, the phone will ship with a new "Retina HD" display, as well as new speakers that are 25% louder than before. The company drew particular attention to the cameras, which will apparently capture the highest quality video ever in a smartphone, including 4K video. iPhone 8 will feature a 4.7" display, and 8 Plus a 5.5" one.

The company called the new device "a huge step forward for iPhone," 10 years after the original model launched worldwide.

Why do people get excited for this overrated and overpriced technology? Do yourselves a favour and buy a decent tablet and a reasonably priced telephone for when you can't take your tablet with you. You'll save HUNDREDS and won't feel such a fool when you realise, two weeks after you enter your elongated contract, that it isn't that different to the phone you had previously.

I've had the same phone for 6 years now and it runs fine. I can surf the 'net, watch videos, play games, take pics and make videos and, shockingly, make texts/calls/video calls. What more do I need?

@gotrekfabian: iPhone 4 (16 GB)came out 6 years ago with a price tag of about $300. Only a few tablets launched in 2011 - Motorola, HP, Dell, Blackberry, Apple, ZTE and Toshiba for an average price of a 16GB tablet to be $450 (which is very conservative; HP's launch price was 499, and the tablet was discontinued a month later). Adjusted for inflation today, the total cost of a phone and tablet 6 years ago is about $816.17.

In other words, with $820 or so, you get two devices with a combined storage of 32GB, one device only wifi capable, and overlapping functions between the two devices.

OR, you could just get a 64GB iPhone 8 Plus for $799 today, and carry one device that does everything for you, and use that for the next 6 years.

@Oogazi: You're talking nonsense in order to defend this product it seems. In January 2017 I bought a Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (16gb) for £180 and a micro SD card (64gb) for another £15. Couple that with a decent android smart phone for around £100 and you've saved about £400.

Using your inflation for previous products is completely inane and you just make yourself sound like an atypical iAddict.

Edit: Oh, and the mobile telephone that costs £100, or even less these days, is still capable of doing everything anyway. A few milliseconds of time saved by its CPU is completely negligible.

@gotrekfabian: oh I absolutely hate apple products. I'm an android user. I just happen to enjoy trolling people who like to complain a lot, especially on things that they have personally no vested interest in.

Besides, accounting for inflation is the only correct way to compare prices between different years.

And I was more mocking the fact that you feel it more efficient to carry two devices, when one will do. Sort of flies in the face of 'efficiency'.

@Oogazi: I suggest that you read the ToU for GS. Trolling is a bannable offence. Besides which using inflation on items which historically decrease in value as a comparison to earnings and the value of currency is not the way to define an items value historically in any which way whatsoever.

As for 'efficiency' it is entirely possible to use a lesser device for everything you need. Should you wish for a better quality then it is best to use a tablet. They are designed to be portable and many people utilise that fact and carry tablets in this day and age.

And just where was I complaining? I merely asked why it was that people get excited for a completely overrated product that sells simply by proxy of it's brand and logo. If you think that query is complaining then you don't really know what complaining is.

@iandizion713: Then buy a Bluetooth speaker. If you want to waste a grand on extra volume though, that's your call.

I love how this article fails to specify WHAT the "highest quality video ever in a smartphone" is exactly:

4K video recording at 60 frames per second. Was it THAT hard to type???

Oh boy, 25% louder speakers and old wireless charging tech, how exciting lol. Also no OLED screen still?

This was even more underwhelming than expected.

@Daian: iphone x has an oled screen. expected to cost over $1000usd, so enjoy the hit in the pocket book. that said, the animojis more than makes up for the high price tag.

HOLY **** 25% LOUDER SPEAKERS! That'll help you annoy all the people around you with the tinny, crappy sound Super Smash Candy Drop Saga crap makes! I loved my iPhone 3 and the iPhone 4 was a beautiful solid chunk of metal. Since then, rubbish. Thinner, roundier, more boring. Still waiting for a reason to come back.

Currently using an Honor 8 and love it, beautiful styling, good internals, and kept nicely up to date with Android. And half the price.

@mattcake: you know they have no clue how to hype up their stuff anymore when they try to emphasize louder phone speakers haha.
