Is XCOM 2 as Difficult as its Predecessor?

With a rebel yell.

I failed XCOM 2's tutorial mission. In a level meant to teach me the game's mechanics and intricacies, Firaxis' upcoming sequel killed off my four-person squad before I had time to start the actual campaign. During the 12 hours I recently played of a near-complete XCOM 2, the game was brutal, and rarely gave me space to breathe. However, Firaxis gave me just enough new tools to fight my through seemingly impossible odds.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was one of 2012's most challenging games. Its turn-based squad tactics left little room for error, while high-level strategy elements demanded careful consideration from the commander's chair. XCOM 2 presents the same multilayered structure of Enemy Unknown, except with tougher obstacles, harder objectives, and a new storyline steeped in despair.

This narrative is XCOM 2's biggest change. In Enemy Unknown, we battled an alien invasion force as it arrived to conquer Earth. But in the sequel, the aliens have won, established a totalitarian government, and prospered on our planet for 20 years.

This dynamic permeated every mission during my time with the demo, tying the story and the gameplay into one cohesive knot. Even later in the campaign, when my troops donned alien armor and wielded high-powered weapons, I never felt safe. It wasn't victory I was pursuing, so much as a means to disrupt the alien force, and prolong my survival as a rebel threat.

Because of the way Firaxis flipped the script, XCOM 2 opens itself to more mission variety than Enemy Unknown. Some required the extraction of alien artifacts, the destruction of communications relays, or data hacks on enemy computers. I may have made progress, but only in small increments, as the alien overlords continued their reign.

The increased number of possibilities on the humans' side, however, helped me in my fight. The Specialist class has the ability to hack alien alien networks, augmenting the Resistance soldiers with increased critical hit chance, or increased armor for the mission. The Ranger, the more mobile class, has a blade for close-quarters combat and high-damage kills.

Progress is measured in small increments, as the alien overlords continue their reign.

XCOM 2's newest class, the Psi Operative, however, is also the game's most unique. While other soldiers level up through combat, the Psi Operative does so through studying. Its abilities also unlock at random--lucky players may even unlock the best of the 14 options right off the bat, granting their operative an energy beam that travels through cover, the ability to remotely detonate enemy explosives, or a stasis shield that renders enemies temporarily helpless.

This new character class is only one of the changes I witnessed during my time with XCOM 2, and led to a variety of emergent scenarios in the squad-based skirmishes.

In another twist on the XCOM formula, the sequel's missions often began in stealth mode. The new stealth mechanic removes the boring leapfrog sequences of Enemy Unknown's missions, as you inch your way into the fog, waiting for the enemy to strike. But stealth also leads to new tactical possibilities.

While the aliens patrolled for signs of Resistance activity during my demo, I positioned my troops along narrow chokepoints, coordinated sight lines, and awaited the perfect moment to strike. If all went according to plan, I could launch a grenade into alien clusters, stun the survivors, and snipe any stragglers who survived the onslaught.

The Psi Operative utilizes some of the humans' most unique abilities.
The Psi Operative utilizes some of the humans' most unique abilities.

But this is XCOM, and seasoned players know how rarely a plan falls into place. Much of the time, inaccurate shots and agile enemies necessitated a Plan B, or C, or even D on my part. It went from careful planning to split-second reaction, and try as I might to keep moving toward the objective, the opponent often had a plan of its own.

The new enemy types made things even harder. Sectoids, which played the part of the pawn in Enemy Unknown, now utilize telekinetic abilities in some of the earliest missions, turning my soldiers against each other and reanimating dead corpses to fight on the aliens' side. It's one thing to lose a soldier--it's another to look her in the eye as she shambles toward you with her fists swinging.

Then there's the Viper, one of XCOM 2's brand new enemy types. The name says it all--when attacking, these giant, serpentine creatures reach out their tongue to pull Resistance fighters into their grasp. This not only exposed my soldier, but also dealt consistent damage until I could send another trooper to the rescue, often in the middle of a heated firefight. XCOM 2 rarely let me feel safe.

With so many layers to consider, XCOM 2 rarely let me feel safe.

And when I lost one of my soldiers, to a Viper, or mind control, or an errant explosion from a nearby blazing car, that feeling of loss filled my stomach just like it used to. The knowledge that my favorite sniper, or best medic, or most reliable grenadier was gone forever lent further despair to an already grim game. During my time with it, XCOM 2 was every bit as difficult as Enemy Unknown, and in some places, even more so.

Despite how difficult this all sounds, though, I had fun. A lot of it. I'm still thinking about the last campaign I failed, and the current one I'm fighting through, and how I might help the Resistance survive, if only for a little longer. I haven't played a full version of the sequel, but I can say I'm eager for more. I may have hours of failure ahead of me when that February 5 release date rolls around--but I'm ready to jump back into the fray.

@Taffelost: Or, the tutorial is meant to kill your characters, or it is weighted to be more difficult than normal for story reasons, or maybe just bad RNG. But no, it can't be any of these things; it has to be that the player is terrible, and you are right to post a hateful comment to make this known.

I'm currently reloading Xcom EU/EW to play again. I plan on pre-ordering the game later this week and getting myself ready for day one. The one thing I hate about game releases is that they are always on Tuesdays! Why not Friday's? I mean I work for a living and never have the time during the week to play except during the weekend!

Really looking forward to this, the more I hear about it the better it is sounding. As someone who wasn't particularly great at Xcom: Enemy Unknown/Within this game will probably kick my ass, but I plan on doing an Iron Man run as usual!

Single best feature I've heard of so far is the fact you can create soldiers who are then put into a database that you can reuse for as many games as you like... good for those of us who restart a game a lot, but also like to put a lot of care into the customization aspect! It got tedious remaking similar soldiers over and over again in the last Xcom as I failed game after game lol.

The other big thing is the infiltration aspect, rather than the enemy always expecting your arrival, this sound like it'll make the game a lot more exciting, and (particularly the start of) missions much less repetitive and slow off the start since the game lets you know if you're about to step within line of sight. At first this sounds like it'd make the game too easy, but seems like they've tweaked everything else about it to make it work.

Probably my most anticipated game of 2016, and I don't have to wait long!

One of the best games to come out in the last few years. I think i might wait for a complete edition maybe. The xtra content in Enemy Within made the game so much better.

Love how the boys say how they can't give away too many spoilers, then spend the next ten minutes giving away too many spoilers. Do they also spend Christmas monrning telling everyone what's inside their wrapped presents?

Can't wait to see the Mods for this now that it has real mod support and the controls aren't console based (spending 5 minutes rotating the screen to select one tile was a pain)

To be honest, you really can't asses a game's difficulty by a "game journalist". When we speak strictly (if you want lol) of skill level, most journalists suck at playing games. Hell, some reviewers downright underscore a game for not knowing how to play it right (*cough* Skyward Sword *cough*).

So, really, this article is nothing to base on. I only played Enemy Within, and Classic difficulty wasn't tough. Just needed to get past the learning curve.

I know it's kinda cheating, but you can save the game mid-mission anytime. Never lost one trooper.

@sakkie: No kidding. I beat XCOM:EW on impossible ironman and haven't got past the fourth month in long war without quitting and restarting again in frustration. Playing right now on classic and it's just brutal. It's amazing that I have 500 hours invested in xcom and I still haven't mastered it. What a game! I'll probably get xcom 2 for the cool narrative and great graphics, I highly doubt that it will surpass the strategic complexity and tactical difficulty of long war though.

@Ferric24: WoW man, you really do have to enjoy suffering: D My respect to you commander, may you never give up.

I tryed long war once, i was amazed what they actually managed to do with the game. It was something really different, but after like 30+ battle i kinda lost interest. I think i was beating aliens hard = they didnt have enough meld in the canisters = i didnt have enough meld for tweaking my soldier as i would like. Then again, i played only on normal.

I also finished Xcom:EU only on C/I, so you have to be waaaay better then me.

@Ferric24: does it have actual projectile trajectory like original xcom games? ( ie:you shoot an alien close to you, miss him and the projectile keeps going until it hits a civilian at the other side of the map)

@zinten: No it doesn't, what it does have is much more scatter with rockets. So the chances of hitting civilians, other aliens unintentionally, and your own squad are much much higher. So you really have to rethink your use of explosives in long war.

@saint311: It did, it just didn't reset the randomizer when you re-loaded a game... it was built that way to avoid exploiting I would imagine. So you could reload the game 15 times and the next turn will still play out the same because the game already rolled the randomizer once.

I quit playing XCOM EU because I had too many 99% misses. Maybe I just don't know how to play these games, but getting in good position and taking a quality shot, missing then dying immediately after because you missed at 99% seemed too harsh for me.

@wyansas: Having a 99% shot is no excuse to get careless. The secret to success in X-COM is to think defensively. You don't win by finishing the mission, you win by getting everyone home alive. Always be in cover, and always have another trooper close to provide support when the RNG gods fail you.

In fact, fighting defensively was so effective most of the time that the devs mixed things up in Enemy Within by introducing meld, which you could only get if you found the canisters within a certain number of turns, forcing more aggressive play.

@wyansas: you'd have to reload the move or so before (if possible). The RNG isn't actually random, but predetermined after every move. So even if you did the same move again after a re-load, the RNG would reset

I don't mind games with difficult gameplay, but what I don't like are games where if you make some wrong decisions you can end up at a point of no return and have to start the entire game over. That just leads to frustration for me but I guess some gamers like the constant tension.

@Tomcat2007: the point of no return is something is agree with in many games.
But I do think it is a core feature in the old Xcom; atleast for me.

the good thing is that you have the option to NOT play Ironman. But for me it added something special when I put it on. every move counts.

@Tomcat2007: its a learning lesson. or gear check. an obvious example is: did you properly prioritize your economy and research before the first terror mission.... no? well what could you have done to improve your overall strength to better prepare yourself for this if you could do it all over again... like don't waste all your early cash on excavations and elevators, save it for crucial purchases like laser weapons or carapace armor asap...
