It's A Huge Mistake To Only Play Resident Evil 4's Remake Once

In the first episode of No HUD, Jean-Luc looks into Resident Evil 4 and makes the case of it being one of the most replayable single-player games.

GameSpot's new slate of original video programming continues today with the launch of No HUD, an ongoing series from host and producers Jean-Luc Seipke and Jake Dekker. The show is all about finding new and interesting ways to play some of your favorite games. And in our first episode, Jean-Luc looks at Resident Evil 4 Remake and explains why it's a huge mistake to stop after your first playthrough.

Jean-Luc argues that Resident Evil 4 has so much more to offer beyond the first playthrough. People who head for another go-around can expect higher difficulties, more unlockables, and exciting challenges to pursue. In the end, Jean-Luc makes a case for Resident Evil 4's remake being one of the most highly replayable single-player games out there.

Now Playing: You're Missing Out If You Only Play Resident Evil 4 Once | No HUD

Check out the full episode of No HUD above. And come back each Wednesday for a new installment in the series.

Beyond No HUD, GameSpot is launching a vast slate of exciting new shows. Next up is How It Saved, a series that digs into gaming history and the games, mascots, and people that saved their franchises from obscurity. The first episode, due out Sunday, is all about the original Resident Evil 4, which at the time helped reinvigorate a stagnating series.

If you are just catching up, check out GameSpot's History of Legend of Zelda video and the first episode of The Kurt Locker that digs into all the recent remakes.

A lot of Capcom's games, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, and this are meant to be played repeatedly to see yourself become better. A lot of the enjoyment is to see the stage, monster, etc that you struggled on before gets blown away as you S rank it.

I'm on my third playthrough. The gameplay is great. Same thing happened to me when I played RE2 remake.

One playthrough was enough for this ghastly and overrated game. Thanks anyway.

@Jaykray: Ghastly? Lol, if you aren't into it that's normal. But claiming it's ghastly, bad, or whatever you are claiming is a bit too much.

Stop playing this RE4 ersatz. It's just a soulless AAA that has absolutely no idea what makes the charm and genius of the original. Its 10/10 is as credible as that of Deathloop which was abysmal.

@kaki: From now on, I’m going to use you as a way to tell if I should get a game. If you hate on it, I’m buying it. This game was amazing and Deathloop, while definitely not a 10, was still a blast.

@ironhorse89: caution, he might spout some obscure games or some with non accesible controls / gameplay.

Like the time I was told Mass Effect 1 and Fatal Frame were better than Half Life 2.

@santinegrete: tbf I'd rather go back and reply ME1 over half life 2. But yea I wouldn't say ME1 is better..wouldn't really say it's worse though either.

@kaki: I agree. It's not a 10.

But it's certainly a 9. Still well worth replaying! Shame you're missing out.

playing it with no hud is nonsense especially because thus it's too troublesome to calculate how you can hit. the game is boring enough due to bullet sponge enemies already

Yeah, sorry, I can't help giggling whenever anyone accuses a game of having bullet sponge enemies when games like Destiny exist.

@Barighm: Yeah, sorry, I can't help giggling whenever anyone suffers from black and white mentality. a game may not be as bullet sponge as the other but bullet sponge is still bullet sponge lol

the thing is any games that has level system has bullet sponge BS because that's how these games work but resident evil 4 remake doesn't have levelling system therefore it becomes nonsense when enemies are bullet sponges

the part of what's the purpose of MMO games is wasting time so no wonder enemies in MMO games take long to defeat so when a game is not a MMO game it becomes a BS when enemies are bullet sponges

for me the worst bullet sponge game is xenoblade chronicles x and comparing it to re4r, re4r is not bullet sponge at all, not even destiny and any division games so by your logic I should giggle when you call destiny a bullet sponge game when xenoblade chronicles x exist lol

FYI in xenoblade chronicles x even when you are the highest level and using a mech it takes like half an hour to defeat a 10 level foot soldier alien no matter you unleash hell on him every 5 minutes lol

Er...you're the one who just declared there is no middle ground. So does this mean you giggle at yourself or...what?

@Barighm: what middle ground? as always you are being contrarian and exaggerating a lot lol. your logic is like "this guy who murdered his wife for no reason is not a bad guy when hitler exist" and when I said "this guy is still bad even though he may not be bad as much as hitler was" you are like "you declared there is no middle ground" lmao. I wish gamespot has blocking people feature so I wouldn't endure your logic fails lmao

@ironhorse89: Or Borderlands. Or Remnants. Or any other shooter looter. And even some basic FPS games where enemies just seem to soak up bullets for seemingly no reason (like most older FPS's).

This is a far cry from RE4make where anything at a shotgun or better can literally tear enemies to pieces. Enemies soaking up handgun fire has been a staple of the RE franchise since the very first game.

But there have been non-shooter RPGs where there were lots of bullet sponge enemies.

The mods for this game on PC are kind of what saved it for me.
While I think the vanilla game is a 9/10 and an incredible piece of work,
once I played it with certain tiny mods,
I feel like the full potential of the game was unlocked, and I couldn't go back.

For example:
“No recoil”
“No aiming zoom”
“No crosshair bloom spread”
“Simple FOV for RE4 Remake”

Then if you want you can add mods like, “Headshots stagger”
which work great but do throw off the balance to a large degree.
But as for the 4 above,
it's just a night-and-day difference
and the combat feels like a dance again, like the original but faster and smoother.

Doing a run with unlimited rocket launcher was fun. Facing everything in one shot was hilarious.

You get a rocket, you get a rocket, EVERYONE gets a rocket! 😆

It's true. I'm just finishing up my 7th playthrough, and my last achievement. It has been a blast, I'd even say my replays have been more fun than my 1st run. Each run, I've attempted a new challenge or achievement that completely switches up how I approach combat. This game was designed from the ground up for repeat playthroughs and speedruns

@daidochus: First playthrough was a blind run on Hardcore, without having looked at achievements. Second playthrough was hardcore again, but with a focus on snagging some of the achievements I missed like the one where you dont let the lift stop once. 3rd playthrough was a speedrun on hardcore with bonus weapons for fun, and the no merchant achievement. 4th was first attempt at professional. 5th was a professional run for S+, 6th was assisted for Frugalist run, and current 7th is assisted for Minimalist run

@boodger: Ah nice, My first run was also blind and to enjoy the game. For the other 3 runs, I cramped all the achievements in these runs. It was a hell of a task but doable if you have a plan worked out from beginning to finish.

@boodger: Thanks. Doing the same since 2 remake and then all through Village really helped a lot. When Re4 came out it was just another day at the office. They have all the same achievements for the most part, which also helped to prepare.
