It's Time For A Woman To Play 007, Pierce Brosnan Says

"Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there."

Actor Pierce Brosnan, who portrayed the legendary super-spy James Bond in four 007 movies, has spoken up to say it is time for a woman to play the title role.

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter for his thoughts on a woman playing 007, Brosnan replied, "Yes!"

Now Playing: Bond 25 Title Finally Confirmed - GameSpot Universe News Update

"I think we've watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating; it would be exciting," he said.

It is rumored that one of the plot points in the upcoming No Time To Die movie will feature Lashana Lynch's character taking over the 007 title from Daniel Craig. This has yet to be confirmed. However, we do know that Craig is reportedly planning to retire from playing James Bond after No Time To Die.

Brosnan went on to say that the current producers of the 007 movie franchise, the Broccoli family, might not allow this change. "I don't think that's going to happen with the Broccolis. I don't think that is going to happen under their watch," he said.

In 2017, model, singer, actress, and video game performer Cara Delevingne spoke about how she would like to play James Bond someday. "Everyone's saying I'm meant to be a Bond girl but I'm like, 'no - I'm working on the James Bond aspect first.' I wouldn't mind being a Bond girl but I'm going for James," she said.

Brosnan played 007 in four James Bond films from 1994 through 2004, including GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day.

The new movie, No Time To Die, picks up with Craig's James Bond out of active service and living a peaceful life in Jamaica. Obviously, it doesn't stay this way. "His old friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology," reads a line from the movie's description.

No Time To Die is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, who is best known for the first season of True Detective and the acclaimed drama Beasts of No Nation. Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, and Léa Seydoux all return to the roles of M, Q, Miss MoneyPenny, and Madeleine Swan respectively. The new cast members include Rami Malek in a villainous role, plus Billy Magnussen and Ana de Armas. Check out some on-set footage here.

Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge was hired to add humour to the No Time To Die script, reportedly. No Time To Die hits theatres on April 3, 2020.

female Bond will never happen. It'S hard just to find the right type of person to play the roll.. Thimothy Dalton was the only bad pick. Let the hunt begin. The guy for the roll has big shoes to fill..

I'm still intrigued by Idris Elba as James Bond. I'm down for a female James Bond, a female lead in GTA, etc, etc....

Pierce Brosnan, a former A-lister looking to score a few more roles before retiring so he's kiss Hollywoods back side to signal his support for its identity politics push. What a shame.

It's estimated that there are upwards of 100,000 (and yes that's 5 zeros) spies gathering intelligence and operating in the United States from over 50 different nations. It's also estimated that over half of those spies in question are women, because women, not surprisingly at all, are generally much better at being spies than men. That's over 50,000 women in this country alone.

So please, do go on with your limp, fact free assertion that a female 007 is "unrealistic", "makes no sense", and "couldn't work". There's currently a sold out football stadium worth of women operating in plain sight all around us that are categorically certain that you "true Bond fans" are full of shit XD

@jerusaelem: Reality does NOT make for good entertainment. Even so called Reality TV are often partially if not entirely fake. So no a feamle James Bond is NOT a good idea and like most attempts to inject identity politcis into a brand doing so will kill the brand/IP. But don;t let that stand in the way of need to signal your virtue

@jerusaelem: I guess they arent very good if you know that 50,000 women spies are in the US. Spies arent supposed to be known by just anyone.

Ridiculous comment. Look how well a female Dr Who worked out.

For this who don't know, it's now a terribly written show with badly chosen actors.

A female bond is just daft.

Now to make her a spy called Jayne Bond and make an offshoot series, that's a different story. Two bond franchises would be fun.

1994? GoldenEye was still in production. We didn't get to see the movie until late 1995.

Cara Delevingne can't be James Bond she is a woman that wouldn't make sense but I'd defo like to see her as a Bond girl. She he's hot! That I'd totally watch to see her in like a Bikini or some kinda skin tight leather Spy suit that'd be badass but her as Bond doesn't make any sense.

Did Pierce Brosnan (my favorite Bond) really say this? Damn. I haven't witnessed something this painful since Ed O'Neill casting in Modern Family.

Still, I haven't watch a good non-super hero movie for over a decade, so it wouldn't matter much to me anymore.

@cboye18: "Painful"? Ahahahaha. Your emotions are tied that heavily to the casting choices of a sitcom geared almost exclusively to middle-aged women, are they? That's...interesting. You also seem to suffer from a complete inability to differentiate actors from their respective roles. Also interesting...and kind of sad, really.

"I haven't watch a good non-super hero movie for over a decade"

And that's just...wow. Taking that statement at face value, holy hell is that depressing. Secondly, if you've only watched super hero movies over the last 10+ years, you're actively admitting that you missed the last FOUR James Bond films (a couple of which were ranked among the best in the series) and yet here you are to complain, and I can't help but wonder why I should care about the James Bond opinions of someone who never really gave a damn about Bond in the first place.

While I'm not against the idea of focusing on a female spy set in the Bond universe, and even having her own cinematic run, making her Bond seems like a huge mistake. Besides, some things just don't translate over well from one gender to the other.

Instead of making 007 female, why not make a spin-off starring a female allied agent instead..? Something like what Hobbs & Shaw is to the F&F franchise...

For me, it would be a hard sell to have a 007 movie and not be about James Bond, or have James Bond in it. It would basically almost be a La Femme Nakita, Salt, or Atomic Blonde type of movie, but calling the female lead 007. Where is the intrigue in that?

Sure, why not? Just make it an actually good movie, instead of what 2016's Ghostbusters did, which was a trainwreck of a film that used the anger of manbabies as their only spiel.

The truth is, today a movie will only really succeed if it's part of a brand. Making a new agent IP regardless of the lead's gender wouldn't work simply because it's a new IP. It could be an amazing film, but the amount of money the studio would have to throw at marketing said all-new movie would be too much. Instead, they can just have a lady Bond and just have "007" in there somewhere, that's millions of dollars saved.

Only way original movies get made nowadays is through Netflix et al. and even then, it'd just be retooled as a show.

If you want the film to end up with a terrible audience score like the new season of doctor who because you're trying to appease a group that couldn't give a toss about the franchise and just supports anything that pushes their agenda then sure, go ahead. Whenever franchises turn into vehicles for virtue signalling and social points they tend to become shadows of their former selves and get bad feedback from the actual fans of the series. Never turn your back on your main audience for a group that doesn't care about your franchise and will just feed off of it like vampires and move onto something else when their twitter followers get bored of said topic.

@colbster: What's remarkable about them is how all that time they spend on 4chan, 8chan, reddit and whatever other manbaby echo chambers they frequent turns them into clones who literally spew the same exact garbage as each other, often right down to the phrasing and "trigger words" they're regurgitating by rote...like "agenda" and "virtue signalling." Sounds like they're reading off cue cards or have a cord coming out of their backs that makes them talk when you pull it.

007 is a code name. Anyone of any gender or color could play 007. James Bond is a man, sure. But 007 can be anyone. Read before you post.

@teaguru12: Sure, thats obviously the case and i doubt anyone commenting actually thinks 007 is James Bonds name. However, since every single 007 has been named James Bond, is stands to reason that they might be ticked that this is happening, no? Also, why make them 007? Why not add a female agent 008? or 006? Or 00whatever the hell you want? They dont have to be a "Bond girl" they can be a badass agent themselves. Just dont make them 007, because thats James Bond. If you think that a female character cant be compelling without calling them 007, isnt that actually sexist in itself?

@Blk_Mage_Ctype:

The 00 designation means that the person in question is a MI6 agent with a License to Kill. Once Bond is gone or "retired" as is mentioned in the description for the next film - any person could take over the 007 moniker. While traditionally, all of the 00 agents have been men, there have been instances of female 00 agents. Once one person retires, the number goes to the next qualified person. James Bond is his own character. But anyone could be 007. Even you. If it makes for a compelling story - who should care? I wouldn't be interested in seeing a James Bond film without Bond in it. But he doesn't have to be an MI6 agent to continue to be James Bond.

He should go with the times. Women are everywhere already. I think it's high time that Bond was played by a horse.

No really though. This is Bond we're talking about. This idea is so ridiculous. Oh well, I'll guess we'll be seeing a female Bond, acting all tough and seducing men soon. And everyone will love it I'm sure. Hollywood surely will make it happen, since the more weird an idea is the better nowadays.

@Atzenkiller: It will happen at some point im sure as well. Everyone loving it? No, have you seen the reviews for Ghostbusters? Only the critics will love it while the rest of the fans will not watch it and be called sexist an whatever to try an make up for why the movie did so horribly. Rinse repeat with every other big movie franchise with a male lead.

@harbringar: Ghostbusters was a garbage movie because the script was awful, the special effects were generic, the jokes weren't funny, and the plot itself strayed too far from it's roots . It had absolutely nothing to do with the casting. Kate McKinnon was great, but there's only so much you can do with an turd of a script.

Think I'm wrong? Imagine the same exact movie, except this time with the original cast, Bill Murray and all! Same plot, same jokes, same pacing, same director, same everything!

Yeah. It's still shit. Strange right? Kind of like your weak ass argument : D

@jerusaelem: Im guessing you dont even remember the original Ghostbusters, its script was not in any way Gold. It was kinda a crap script. However, the cast made the movie great, their acting improved the script by so much its now a classic everyone has seen. The new one couldnt be said to have a good script either, but the cast did nothing to improve it and actually hurt it. So with a weak script and weak acting, its still shit. Just like your weak ass argument? =)

Rather than Remington Steele saying "yes" to the question, there should be a beneficial reason to the beloved franchise why a woman, rather than a man, should play the title role instead of changing for the sake of change or appeasement.

I agree with those saying that creating a new IP (I'd add in the world of Bond) with a female lead would be better. I think Bond is one of those roles that really touts its gender, so why try to form a woman into the mold of a male character when she could have her own story? I'd like to see a new agent investigating the DEATH of Bond, making her own way (forgive me, I'm not a huge Bond follower, so maybe he already died in some storyline, but that often doesn't matter when a new movie must be made).

Better idea, just make a new 00 Agent who can actually be a character in her own right rather than turning a male character into a woman.

I swear, for all these people pushing for equality none of them ever seem to understand the definition of the word at all. Seriously, superimposing a woman over the role of what was written to be a male character simply will not work and would require such a heavy rewrite to work that you might as well just write an entirely new character, unless you want to make Fembond an extremely masculine lesbian. Ah, but then again, folks would probably eat that up, even if it does completely defeat the purpose of making Bond a woman in the first place.

Lastly, we all know that Pierce Brosnan only made this lame comment to score brownie points in the modern era, otherwise he would have been pushing this for years. I'm all for equality, but this sort of asinine garbage isn't equality, it's peak stupidity. If you want a strong, female secret agent then either write a new one who actually represents women, or simply give one of the Bond Girls a stronger role in one of the future films in which she does a lot to assist Bond, don't just change his sex and act like you've really done something great to further society.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: New Bond movies can be written for whoever the hell they want. They're not "written to be a male" character because they're not written yet.

Any arguments about what 007 and James Bond are supposed to be are garbage anyway. Precisely ZERO of the movies portray him the way Ian Fleming intended him: as a boring, dull, droll man that things happen to...not some superspy hunk meatpie that gets some bombshell innuendo-named skank to throw her knees behind her ears every movie. He even said that he chose "James Bond" as the name because he couldn't think of a name he thought was more boring.

@James_xeno: Not at all apples and oranges. It's a perfectly apt analogy. The books and the intention of the person who created the character in the first place have never really been followed in the movies, meaning that the movies themselves are an adulterated product. To now pretend as if they're the sort of "canon" from which no deviation should ever be allowed is therefore completely undermined by their own nature and a very dishonest argument.

As for who cares about the books, they were massively popular for their time and still sell. If you'd like, you can go to EBay and spend thousands and thousands of dollars to get a full set of earlier editions.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: They can't create anything new because they know that people will keep watching the same crap they've already seen a million times. If they keep using the Bond name, then lots of folks will watch it anyway just because of that, no matter if a guy or a monkey plays him.
