"It's Too Early" to Say What's Next for Killzone, Dev Says

"We love that franchise, we really do."

According to Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst, it's "too early" to talk about the next Killzone game. That's not because he's become uninterested in the series, but rather, Guerrilla's focus at this time is on their ambitious-sounding 2016 PlayStation 4 new IP, Horizon: Zero Dawn.

"My enthusiasm for Horizon by no means should suggest that I'm now uninterested in Killzone," Hulst told Edge, as reported by GamesRadar. "We love that franchise, we really do. But it's too early for me to comment on future projects. It's going to be a very big challenge for us to get [Horizon] out the door. And as for what's going to happen after that? We'll talk about that later."

No Caption Provided

Sony and Guerrilla Games have released a new Killzone title almost every other year since the franchise first launched with the original Killzone in 2004. That game was followed up by Killzone Liberation in 2006, with Killzone 2 coming in 2009. Killzone 3 was released in 2011, while 2013 saw the release of Killzone: Mercenary and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Also in the interview, Hulst says Horizon is the "toughest" project Guerrilla has ever worked on.

"After we shipped Killzone: Shadow Fall, and we'd been through the hoopla of doing a launch title, I thought that was going to be the toughest thing we'd ever do," he said. "It pales in comparison to this. This is so much more challenging on the team in every single way. But I find that doing something that is this refreshing, and that is supported so strongly by the development team, is probably even more important to the success of a title than how far you are out of your comfort zone. I feel a sense of love for this project among the team, and maybe that sounds corny, but it's really empowering."

Big fan of every single Killzone franchise. I've seen people comment that they had enough of Killzone, take a break etc.. But my body is READY for another Killzone anytime! Multiplayer Killzone is amazing and I still have Shadow Fall while there are other games in my library I've sold them. It is the best FPS I have ever played. BF/COD and the likes are no where compared. My opinion.

Some suggested we should play as Helghast. It's a good idea but I don't see anything wrong if we play as VSA anyways. I wish there's more abilities, drone types, classes and bigger maps like KZ2, probably the best in the series.

Can't wait for the next Killzone more than Horizon.

The story game felt for me personally as 7 out of 10.

the multiplayer part was 9 out of 10.

the multiplayer was very deep. Good weapons Lots of tactics and very balanced classes overall. Maps are top notch.

The Killzone franchise has so, so much potential. The setting is great, the environments are great, the enemies are great. Unfortunately, the story is told poorly, the acting is generic, and the gun diversity is not there. They don't feel "alien" enough for what the franchise is. I wish they would go the path of games like Resistance. That kind of gun variety would be perfect for Killzone.

I didn't really care for Shadow Fall. Some sections just felt rushed and unpolished. It just didn't feel like Killzone. I hope Killzone 4 pushes the franchise forward by introducing something new and exciting along with a great story. Until then, I'm happy with what they're doing. Horizon looks amazing. I can't wait to see more footage

Kill zone 2 and 3 were phenomenal to me, I really enjoyed them but SF was lacking a special something. Would like to see another KZ.

If Sony wants to bring a true shooter to the PS4, there's something called Socom.

Maybe the next game can be more than just a tech demo for the PS4? Not that I really care, nothing about the lore or setting of Killzone really interests me.

I'm glad they are focused on Horizon! The game has potential with its RPG & Action mix and it looks beautiful, I hope they take their time with it.

I've never played any killzone games, but my brother said they're not good. Something about feeling too heavy?

@centethomas: The movement and aiming in Killzone feels more weighty, it's comparable to Battlefield Bad Company if you've played that.

In comparison, games like CoD and Halo feel like you're "ice skating".

I don't mind it though, Killzone's controls are still precise and responsive, it just feels a bit different

@7tizz: If you mean feel more like a 360 controller since 360 controllers are generally more preferred for FPSes then the first thing that comes to mind is the wireless Afterglow ones. Those only cost 29.99 too compared to the official ones that still cost nearly as much as a newly released game. Might have cheaper wired ones that have the same ergonomics as the 360 controller/fatter than the regular ps3 controller at Gamestop.

Idk why but I couldn't really get into Shadowfall. Mercenaries on the other hand I liked a lot more but it felt more like CoD to me.

@mjc0961: Yeah I felt like I was constantly slogging from one point to the next. I should've spent more time on the MP but I sold my PS4 a little while ago since I normally don't do early adopting of consoles. Mercenaries was my first KZ game so I haven't tried Liberation on PSP and the ones on the PS3 yet.

Hmm I think it'd be a good idea to put a big title like Killzone on break for a few years to work on other new IPs and see what they can do with them. Horizon: Zero Dawn certainly seem interesting enough to warrant a look at. If only more developers had that mindset so they could potentially come up with something better than what they've worked on for 10+ years.

One thing I loved about killzone shadow fall was how quick the game loaded when you started a session other developers could learn from this.

Judging from the last Zillzone, they should hang it up. Junk game with the worst multiplayer I have ever played.

After Killzone : Shadow fall, series definitely need some rest or it will continue to go downhill. On the other hand I am glad they decided to make a game of different genre than FPS. Horizon looks absolutely stunning, despite the the fact that people who are making it are mostly inexperienced in open world Action-RPG (or whatever genre the game falls in).

Kudos to Guerrilla Games for taking risk with Horizon. And even if they fail the first time, I am sure they will do well with the sequel (if they decide to make one) just like they did with KZ 2 .

Take your time on Horizon Zero Dawn as I can wait for my beloved Killzone. Really enjoyed Shadowfall even though it was the weakest of the franchise. However, Mercenary was so fun and addicting I hope they go that route next. I really miss the franchise, I hope we don't have to wait to long.

@mjc0961: Killzone Mercenary was on the Vita not the PSP. I think you are thinking of the PSP Killzone Liberation.

Personally found Shadow Fall rather fun and probably the only launch title I still have. I wish they would make the story a little deeper and the way to do that is stop focusing on making everything seem "big." Yes have this big battle going on, but shrink down your specific story to a select group or maybe a family. That's something Resistance did well that Killzone never grasped.

Then when going online take KZ2, but adjust it so it's not so clunky. And for the love of ... take out the stupid shotguns. Why does every shooter NEED shotguns? KZ2 made me go insane with those stupid things.

@wrestlemaniaw: In the remaster they could swap Rico with Templar and have all the characters clap when the badguy shoots him.

What I find very positive from this studio is that they are taking risk in making a game in a completely different genre (third-person, action/adventure game). Nowadays almost all AAA studios only focus on sequels or in genre they're familiar with ( ex. Bungie with FPS and SQ/ CapCom with TPS).

RareWare managed to master their games in almost every genre ( 2D platformer, 3D platformer, 2D fighting games, racing games, FPS).

I always wished they'd doubled down on what made the original unique, instead of chasing Call of Duty and kind of coming up short. Killzone one was hampered by the PS2's hardware (seriously, did you ever play splitscreen? It was slide show.) but I really liked the weighty movement, the very deliberate reload animations, and being able to pick from four characters with different loadouts/abilities/paths through the levels. None of that stuff was executed on particularly well, but the potential was there. Killzone 2 had the budget and the hardware to do all those ideas justice ... but instead they made a Modern Warfare game staring Rico. : \

I always wondered what Killzone would be like if it'd been an Xbox exclusive originally and had the hardware to do a bit more with that first game.

@Mogan: I think KZ1 was going for a Modern Warfare feel as well, but the godawful graphics and voice acting turned it into GI Joe instead.

KZ2's plot, I will admit, is pretty bad, and Rico is insufferable. But it had that uniquely heavy feel that it just absolutely nailed - something I can't say for the other games.

@unreal849: Well, Killzone predates Modern Warfare by several years, so I don't think that was an influence. Killzone One was going for a sci-fi re-imagining of the themes and environments of major 20th century conflicts (WWI trench warfare, WWII blitzkrieg and urban fighting, Vietnam jungles, that kind of thing) which I always thought was cool and resulted in a real wide variety of environments and level designs.

The graphics, for the time, were pretty good but just tried to do way too much. Performance chugged, textures popped in like crazy, the half canned death animation half rag doll physics on the bodies always looked strange. The art style and weapon designs were great though. G.I. Joe is a pretty good comparison, actually.

Make a Killzone Tactical TPS like Socom/Ghost Recon.

I don't care about FPS games. I prefer TPS where I can see my character. I find it more immersive.

Yeah, maybe it's time to let this one go. Out of four console games, only KZ2 really holds up as a good shooter, and the rest are mediocre at best.

What really bugs me is that the consistently-excellent Resistance is dead, yet KZ will probably continue.

@unreal849: Yeah, Resistance 2 was a really great game. The problem I have with shooters now is that most of them vary little from what we experienced already. For example, Destiny has a solid FPS mechanic and that's about it (and that game lacks everything else). There needs to be a different mechanic or meta-game besides the shooting to keep me interested.

@cboye18: I thought Resistance 2 was largely reviled by hardcore series fans for moving away from the more old school, Timesplitters style of the original, towards a Call of Duty style 2 gun, stawberry jam health regen. shooter.

I think I beat R2, but now I can't remember very much about it at all. I think there was a swarm I had to run from at one point?

Smart move. Killzone needs a break at least 6-8 years from now and I think the ext Killzone game should be on PS5 if you ask me. That said, it's nice to see a developer such as Guerrilla Games do something new like Horizon: Zero Dawn and it's one of the few PS4 exclusive games I'm dying to play next year.
