Iwata headlining GDC 2009

Nintendo president delivering main keynote at this year's game-maker confab, slated for March 23-27 in San Francisco.

Think Services' annual Game Developers Conference is on course to attract industry illuminati to the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco from March 23-27. Today, show organizers revealed that one of the biggest players in the industry will usher them in. Providing the main conference keynote address this year will be Satoru Iwata, president of game-industry front-runner Nintendo.

Satoru Iwata
Satoru Iwata

Iwata's keynote address will be titled "Discovering New Development Opportunities." The Nintendo executive is expected to give his presentation at 9:00 a.m. PST on March 25 in the Esplanade Room of the Moscone Center's South Hall.

The talk marks Iwata's first appearance on the GDC's center stage since 2006, when he revealed The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS, as well as the addition of Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 games to the Wii's Virtual Console. He also discussed one of Nintendo's key design philosophies: disrupting traditional game development to advance the medium. The following year, the Wii's chief designer, Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto, was given a lifetime-achievement award for his three decades in the industry.

GameSpot will be on hand to provide extensive coverage of the event, including Iwata's keynote. For more information, check out GDC 2009's official Web site.

Listen, the announcement is NOT going to be about new games for the hard-core audience. Nintendo already relased a game from each major seires on the Wii and usually, each system would only get one from each series. I doubt that Iwata will even talk about or even make a reference to any new games. Like a few others have stated, it will be about sales figures so don't get your hopes up.

davros878, I am not trying to be a dick here but you should have known the Wii was never going to compete with the other consoles in graphics. Wii never had a chance to get Fallout 3 there is just way to much going on for the Wii's hardware capabilities it is not that Nintendo is not fighting for them which they are not because it will not help them get more than another gimped port.

There are several problems which i hope nintendo will cover, because if they're not i'm probably going to switch to Xbox. First, the big one. Graphics. They're getting better, but Nintendo is trailing behind every other console. Wii graphics are worse then Xbox and Playstation, and DS is worse then PSP. Another big problem is that Nintendo doesn't make enough deals with third party developers. So while everyone enjoyed Fallout 3, we got mysims (which sucked). a third problem is it's online capabilities. i liked the VC and all the other features, but it needs better hardware to find wi-fi points with. and where was all the guitar hero online songs? did they die? so basically they need all that, and a few original ideas and they're all set. one last thing and it's just three words. STAR FOX WII. and it better not suck.

GDC isn't a big game announcement time so I don't see why people are saying Iwata will let gamers down. Plus he is only doing the Keynote address, not a Nintendo press conference. We will see at the supposedly bigger E3 this year if Nintendo gives us another lackluster show, or if they come out of nowhere with a star punch KO. I think Nintendo will pull it off this year.

I agree with xdeiri to a certain extent except this is true for any company. Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony. Having a selection gives healthy competition among the three. We the gamers shouldn't be the ones hating. The Wii isn't for me but I don't hate it or the people who enjoy it. My favourite console this "next gen" is the PS3 and that is hated the most and second, I enjoy the 360. My point being they all need one another. Without one, something will lack because of it due to the lack of competition. Yes, this is directed to all the "haters" out there for any console.

kavadias1981 gamers has no loyalty of any kind, blame your self first before blaming nintendo, last gen nintendo almost lost, where where you ? why nintendo should be loyal to you ? if you are not loyal to nintendo you should never be loyal to any others, and dont call your self a gamer just cause you have some 7 games for a console i am loyal to nintendo i buy every thing with their name on it, and i am proud of it, cause if nintendo is gone you can be assured gaming will be as will, so before trying to analyze any thing try to own every game since the atari 2600 and the nes to this day, then i am sure you wont be trashing nintendo like this, you should be great full to nintendo without them it will be the same era prior to the nes, even now what helping the industry not to be effected by the recession is their product, other wise you can see some major closer of big developers names and big losses , what you have on your big muscle consoles? only blood, blood and more blood, what so original about that?

for your info miyamoto and iwata are the keys behind the growing of the gaming industry, wii and ds, especially miyamoto his tribute to the gaming world is so huge that it is fighting back the recession tell me who can do this, by his genus work on wii, ds concept and some best selling titles, and recently you must heard that gaming surpassed dvd and blue ray sales with 56 percent to nintendo. tell me again did bill gates did it or sir howard of sony or steve job or etc, so before bashing, get your self some education, cause when you talk about nintendo you talk about gaming it self. period

You know what I find funny? Every time a person posts a message that even slightly bashes Nintendo, said message is attacked by delusional Nintendo fanboys. I would like to clarify something before I begin my rant. I dont do jealousy at which console sells more than another. You know why? Because I have a life (although that is debatable considering I post on a gaming website lol). Plus I own a Wii with 13 games and a PS3 with 7 and both are used daily. So my opinions are never based on bias. OK?! Right, now that thats done. Shtinky has it exactly right. Nintendo have now become famous for letting gamers down at announcements. I think it is about time that we accept the reality; Nintendo doesn't like us anymore. We don't bring them enough sales or profit. We moan about every little gaming detail no matter how insignificant. We are never satisfied and after a week we want the next big game from them. They have of course abandoned us for said reasons and are now embracing the non-gamer. So basically, their next big announcement isn't for us. It isn't the next big Zelda (which will be dumbed down for the non-gamer ala Phantom Hourglass). It is to announce their next move at enticing even more non-gamers to buy more Wiis. Thats it. There is no dog biscuit for us, it is for them. You guys need to accept that just as I have. I sat on this website defending the Wii for 2 years whilst everyone else bought a 360 and/or PS3. 2 years deluding myself, thinking the sun shone out of Miyamoto's arse and Iwata could do no wrong. But then I got stuck. I bought anything that was worth anything for the Wii and ejoyed it, but it was over too quick. Now there is nothing on it. Nothing to buy, nothing to look forward too. I then realised that Nintendo had been playing idiot gamers like me for fools. Made me think I was part of something revolutionary and special, different. But in the end I realised they they didn't give a crap about me, the gamer. All they cared about was stringing me along with "big announcements" and "possibilities" like Wii Motion Plus. Nah, I say forget them; they wanna turn their back on me then i'll turn my back on them. I finally woke up and bought a PS3 and it has rekindled my love for video games, just like Nintendo "said" the Wii was supposed to. Yeah I still use my Wii. I enjoy spending time playing my VC downloads every so often. I even just yesterday bought My Fitness Coach for it as I am selling my Wii Fit (which is crap by the way, a piddly amount of exercises that are causing me repetitive strain injury because there are so few of them. Another clever Nintendo marketing fad that I was taken in by which turned out to be another disappointment). I just wish that in its money crazed stupor Nintendo would remember its roots and the people that matter/ Yeah its business, but Nintendo owes us a lot. We kept them afloat during the disasters that were the N64 and the GC. If it wasn't for us gamers they would be long dead and wouldn't have even had the chance to release the DS and Wii. So in the end, dont prove me right Nintendo and make this announcement about the non-gamers and empty words. Make it about us, the gamers, your legion of fanboys and for Mario! Give the poor bloke a rest once in a while! Maybe he wants to retire but you just wont let him. It has been about 25 years now that he has been banging his head on coin blocks!

"Discovering New Development Opportunities," eh? Sounds to me like Nintendo is trying to infect clean minded game developers with the whole philosophy of "Dumb down your games, make bank!" I'm sorry to be such a negative Nancy, but I don't see how anything good can come of this.

*sigh* You'd of thought after 4 years you kids would stop hoping for nintendo to announce big things at press conferences. What's worse is after each press conference you apply a fresh diaper and run to the forums to cry and moan that they let you down again. Just give it a rest already, it's tiresome. And for gods sake, grow up and face reality.

Rect Pola talks sense - this is so true. All the bile poured at Nintendo is fuelled by only one thing. Jealousy. I will quite agree that I play on my Wii least out of the big 3 - but that doesn't mean I think it deserves any less of a place than my other two consoles. The Wii can have my entire family and family of in-laws - that's 4 generations of people - all stood up at once laughing and playing together. You try getting my family and in-laws together any other time and it usually descends into a fist fight. Nintendo deserves serious respect for the amount of new blood they've drawn into the industry - it's going to mean a very healthy future for gaming.

It's funny how much everyone rag on Nintendo for riding their franchises, but there are 2 things that are always neglected: 1) Everyone wants to live the life; strong franchises are the holy grails of the industry. ALL developers dream of such IP's (okay, not Tim Schafer or Suda 51 but still) 2) It's really hard to maintain a franchise (let alone several) regularly for so long and still actually be good, especially for the reasons the early games were good. (Just look at Sonic) More are getting there, but few really know what it's like at Nintendo's age. Regardless of bias, those two points deserve respect.

nintendo first party stuff is always cutesy. when sega had a console there first party games offered a varity of graphical styles but nintendo apart from the f zero it is all cute all the time. apart from mario zelda and f zero nindtendo don't really make any very good games. lets face it the snes sold on capcoms street fighter. i know when i brought the gamecube i got it because capcom put the resident evil series on to there. where as back when i got the dreamcast it was because of lots of great sega titles and the same goes for the saturn. since sega left hardware non of the three companies offer the kind of first party support that sega did and i think that sucks.

To kavadias1981, I was born in 1988 so my scope isn't quite as wide, but I completely agree. The game that i considered to be the real "new" game of the Gamecube generation was Pikmin. But, looking at my Wii pile of games, I don't really see any IPs that are really new from Miyamoto.

After playing video games for over 20 years I am sick, sick, sick to death of Mario and Zelda games. As anyone who knows me will know, I own most of the main ones and I really want to see Nintendo do something different. I pray that they reveal a brand new franchise which will appeal to gamers and reignite our passion for gaming. Yeah Ninty, you have pulled the non-gamer in, congrats on that and you are reaping the rewards, but come on now, it is time to get back to those that really matter, your fans.

If I read correctly, his keynote titled "Discovering New Development Opportunities" is not Nintendo's own keynote rather, it is the main press conference. So those of you getting a negative vibe from the title shouldn't expect that Nintendo is going to solely talking about development opportunities. Or maybe I misinterpreted the whole thing incorrectly?

Iwata's speeches have been pretty disappointing for the past few years. I could already imagine what he would say at GDC "I would like to announce that we at Nintendo are happy with our casual audience and will not release any hardcore titles this year, but we haven't fully left them out of the picture because we plan to re-release all our good games from last-gen wrapped up with innovative controls." *Expects thumbs down*

Despite not releasing any reports or trailers, Ninty has admitted to working on the next Zelda for a while now. I really wouldn't be surprised if Iwata announced it and if it came out much sooner than expected. At least if they surprised us there wouldn't be 2+ years of hype to bring the game down. It goes without saying that they wouldn't rush a Zelda game though.

Please be a keynote on how there will be no more shovelware and you will start producing actual good game; or update games of yesteryear like so many people here have said. I won't buy a wii just for Zelda and Mario, I need more substance to my gameplay.
