A different actor was originally cast in the role, apparently.
Jack Black stars in A Minecraft Movie as Steve, but Black wasn't apparently the first choice to play the role. According to Puck, actor and comedian Matt Berry was originally cast in the role.
The What We Do in the Shadows actor still shows up in the movie, however, voicing a villager named Nitwit. Jennifer Coolidge's character, Marlene, hits him with a car and later goes on a date with him.
Berry took this smaller role reportedly due to "scheduling conflicts" that came about after the 2023 actor strike.
A Minecraft Movie is enjoying huge success at the box office, where it's made more than $300 million after just its first weekend. Like many of director Jared Hess' movies, reviews for A Minecraft Movie were mixed. Here at GameSpot, our A Minecraft Movie review scored the film a 7/10.
Given the immense sense of A Minecraft Movie so far at the box office, it's no surprise that conversations are already underway about a sequel, and it could star a new character. A sequel has yet to be officially confirmed, however.
A Minecraft Movie is now in theaters, and it'll eventually be released for Blu-ray. For more, be sure to check out GameSpot's preorder guide for A Minecraft Movie's home video release, including a Walmart-exclusive Collector's Crafting Table Edition.
