Jaffe 'couldn't care less' about next generation

Outspoken Twisted Metal, God of War developer says he's in no rush for next wave of consoles, believes next gen will make "ambitious" projects more difficult.

News of the next generation of consoles has sparked gamers' interest, what with word that the next Xbox may not have a disc drive and that the PlayStation 4 is reportedly ditching the Cell processor, but Twisted Metal and God of War developer David Jaffe is not yet compelled by the new technologies.

Jaffe isn't interested in next-gen tech just yet.
Jaffe isn't interested in next-gen tech just yet.

"I couldn't care less about next-gen," Jaffe told Edge. "I started at Sony Imagesoft doing Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games, and I went through that to PS1, then PS2, PS3, Vita… You go through the cycle enough and you realize today's 'Oh my f****** God' is tomorrow's 'Ehh, whatever.'"

"Ultimately, this is all going to be yesterday's news and it's about the experience, the game," he added. "Unless we're talking about holodecks, or AI that's so amazing it can actually write a compelling story around you procedurally based on your choices, I'm not interested."

Jaffe told the site that the new generation of consoles will make game development more difficult for "ambitious" projects. He said instead of focusing attention on power, he hopes that console manufacturers aim to create systems with greater functionality.

"I'm no longer that excited about next-gen technology; it means budgets go up," he says. "It sucks. The biggest thing I want is what you get from the PSP and the 3DS; it's always on, there's a sleep mode and I can just hit a button and I'm right back where I was and I don't have to go through all the boot-up s***."

Jaffe is on his way out of Eat Sleep Play, the studio he co-founded in 2007. He will stay on at the company to see Twisted Metal through its international launch. The vehicular combat game shipped in North America last month and makes its way to retail in Europe this Friday.

The longtime developer is planning to open a studio in San Diego, California, though it is not clear what Jaffe will work on there. It was suggested that he would create casual games, but Jaffe clarified, saying, "I have zero plans to make games like Farmville and Angry Birds."

See! SEE AMERICANS! he said "I couldn't care less" NOT " I could care less" but "I couldn't care less" so for all you idiots (mostly the Americans that write it but i'm not bashing all Americans, just the idiot ones) learn from this and from now on make sure you say it right because you just look so stupid when you don't.

@mario-nin-freak Agreed. Right now, I'm more of a PC gamer with DS filling in the gaps. Mainly with its ports/remakes/sequels of series I've loved for years, like: Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Resident Evil... But, the Wii U just might bring me back to consoles...maybe. @Eddie Makuch I agree with Jaffe. Alotta the problems we've had this gen are directly tied to development costs of games. It strains the devs and puts them in debt to their publishers, it bleeds gamers, it discourages creative risks, it encourages publisher racketeering... All so that a tech company can sell expensive new hardware and the minority of "hardcore" fanboys/tech-heads can see their characters' ass hairs. Pass. I just need my graphics to look nice and have a creative visual style; I don't need to see the protagonists' dingle berries. Which the 5th (PS1/N64) and 6th (PS2/Gamecube) gens did quite nicely, and at a reasonable cost. I sure as Hell don't need to live on ramen just to continue gaming, nor swap creativity for low risk market-minded crap -which is what most of the 7th gen has consisted of.

@genjuroT Then give an example that makes sense... Also you clearly don't know what you're on with, since consoles do not make money, the games make money and the console creators take a % of that money, that's how they're making money... Other than Nintendo everyone else sells at a loss, add in the money they spend designing the new consoles and that's a lot of money they've got to make back before they hit profit. Also the reason you get those options on pc games is because they have to, to make sure it runs on enough pc's to be worth selling it for them. Console games allow the dev's not to waste time making changes that allow expensive and inexpensive versions to run it. Which gives them more time on developing "The game of tomorro" as you put it. As far as competition, it's fun to compete... If everyone was equal it would be more fun, hence why people are put into similar groups of skill in most games... Beating people not as good as you is just boring and pointless. But it's not the only reason for people playing games.

@ genjuroT I agree with what you said, but if you made it your life's ambition to re-educate everyone you wouldn't have anytime to play games. Either our education systems are failing or humans are becoming more and more stupid. I concede it's a bit of both.

@Darnasian Did you mean 'your defeat'? Yea, it would feel good to beat everyone, but that's just nature taking its course over whomever gets the only piece of meat. I like competition. It's the reason anyone plays games almost. Heres a quote for you "A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you're looking down, you can't see something that's above you." The point is that there will always be someone better than you. There's no reason to compete when people are equal. You might beat a few people, but what about the people that never got the chance to compete.

@genjuroT Why wouldn't you be proud of yourself for winning the race? Let's say those racers were really talented and you've beaten them through hard work and concentration Why on Terra wouldn't you be proud of yourself when you succeeded to beat people with actual talent through hard work and motivation About the falling part Here is a quote for you "My defeat will be my greatest victory" Overcoming the odds is a thing to be proud of And if you ever fall you just have to try harder to rise again

@Darnasian Yea, still, you are placing yourself above the other racers. Much like a trophy on the top of a shelf, everything else gets neglected. Pride is just human nature though. I just try to carefully select what I'm proud in. There's a saying for people with to much pride...The pride comes before the fall.

@genjuroT Well here we do agree Backwards compatibility is a huge feat every console should have This is one of the things that actually needs to be improved This way you can keep just one console not 2 BUt about the PS3 although it had backwards compatibility also if you played too much PS2 games the system started having some failures and ultimately you ended up with your PS3 converting into a PS2 This really needs improvement

@Darnasian Yea i forgot about the support for the last xbox. Idk how they are going to fix that issue unless they did what ps3 did in the start and allow ps2 games be played on ps3. Accept for some reason they stopped building them that way. So, They have to improve that as well.

@genjuroT That's a disturbing example considering I'm against child abuse and things like that Kinda weird but to be proud of someone isn't necessarily a bad thing In your context it may be But let's say you did something great...you are a NASCAR Racer and your car has the same power as you competitor that's next to you To cut a long story short you win the race through skill Right here in this context, being proud of yourself isn't a bad thing

@genjuroT Pride also means to never let yourself beaten and ultimately to don't accept defeat... Pride doesn't have always to be seen with bad eyes... If you know how to exploit it If you understand what I mean? And NO! on this page I never put anybody bellow me

@Darnasian Lets say a mother is proud that her child got straight As. Some of the other kids in class got Fs because they are starving and being beaten at home. Pride in your Kid for getting straight As is placing your kid above the other kids. The mother should have pride in humanity. That's what I believe. You are great for treating others as equals, but that doesn't coincide with the word pride.

@genjuroT You know that the 360 already has a Blu-ray don't you? You just have to buy it separately and you can use it just for Blu-ray movies. But the 360 has a Blu-ray Mainly consoles are inferior to PC because they can't be upgraded That's one of the many advantages of PC gaming in my opinion Being able to upgrade your PC you know that PC gaming will never lose support What I mean is that after a new generation of consoles is released the support for the last generation drops like 80% I do support technology and it's improvement but consoles do kinda annoy me because of this cycle

@Darnasian I only play pc games. I just don't have anything to look forward to because they are all ported from the consoles. (-diablo3) Also, like I said before, I only mentioned the cloud as one of endless upgrades a console could have and that upgrades don't always mean graphics only. It could be something like processing power or a 500gb hard drive, Or blue rays for the next 360. Those are just small upgrades that could lead to even better ones because the better ones would be funded by the previous ones. You can't cross to better technology without many bridges...to answer your questions.

@Darnasian drop your pride, it's unhealthy. Just because someone tried to correct you doesn't mean they are attacking you. I even tried apologize for It, but you're so arrogant that you can't accept that you made a small mistake. I correct people on grammar and spelling, so what? Doesn't make me a genius. I just don't want people saying words like "dafuq". I'm sure you're smarter than that. Don't prove me wrong. Yes, i was enjoying it. I'm so bored lately and this was fun.

@genjuroT "how am I ignorant for teaching you how to use the words 'than' and 'then'?" No offense dude but I already know how to properly use them...just because I was mistaken once it doesn't mean I don't know... About the conversation...well don't mind the insults...when I get enraged I do usually insult...really cloud gaming?...if you don't like that why did you even mention it...I just purely hate this concept and I get pretty enraged when I hear people are actually supporting this... And really?....you enjoyed the conversation?... Anyway I've noticed other of your posts on this page...if the PC is so powerful than why don't you play only on the PC games? The Diablo project for consoles has been canceled if they ever started it at least... You think you're a genius don't you?... You think you know everything and that you always have to "correct" people... And about the conversation...again...really?...don't make me laugh...I mean no offense but I can see your sarcasm over there... "Until your insults"...ok see here...I may be incorrect but you clearly enjoyed the fact that you could respond to me and think you are correct and kinda mock me into your mind...think again...people are not that stupid anymore...

@famekiller Don't give up on making people smarter, spread your knowledge :) If i saw someone misuse or misspell in a resume, i wouldn't hire them. I'd hire the guy that can properly communicate the English language without ambiguations and misinterpretations. So whether they appreciate it or not, It helps them in life. btw, great 'you're' usage. I don't see that often lol. Also, grammar and spelling is a pet peeve of mine. I digress...

@JimmeyBurrows what? consoles are still making money. Microsoft even said they weren't revealing their new console because the current one is still making a lot of money. PCs are greatly ahead of consoles. take battlefield 3 for example. they had to reduce everything just so the consoles can play it, including map size because the console has a crappy processor. also, whenever a console game is ported to the pc, you have the option on the pc to increase everything. take fallout for example. No options for console, but for pc you can increase the draw rate, draw distance, antialiasing, directx. These are just a little bit of things you can improve. While consoles only show objects 20 feet away, the pc can show objects at any distance. This is because of the lack of power the consoles have.

@Darnasian how am I ignorant for teaching you how to use the words 'than' and 'then'? I don't think you know what ignorant means. No need to resort to insults either. I was just giving you a couple examples of the endless upgrades a console could have. I don't even like cloud anything. This conversation has degraded to a pissing contest for you. You'd love to see me without technology? You're talking to someone who lived in a time without internet. I don't know how old you are but I grew up learning to appreciate the technology we have and how we got to where we are. I'd gladly go back to writing personal letters by mail. It would teach people to appreciate it as well. Btw, i was enjoying this conversation until your insults. Idk if you thought I insulted you earlier, but i wasn't trying to if you thought I was.

@genjuroT ~ I didn't say people wont buy a game because it's been made with a high development cost, hence why they have nothing to do with what I said. ~ Limbo was brilliant from an artistic point of view and quite fun to play. Simplicity doesn't make a game bad. Not to mention it was made with a tiny dev team. ~ Angry Birds, Farmville and minecraft aren't even designed for consoles. But some people don't want huge games, simple flash games they can play on their phone for 10 minutes is nice for them. ~ They lose money on consoles, so how the hell is releasing a new console going to fund R&D? ~ It doesn't matter that the hardware isn't as great as it can be, since without the right software based tools it wont make anything better... and the whole arguement that consoles are just out dated PC's is stupid, since consoles have much better gaming capabilities without all the other bloatware that a PC has to run as well.

@genjuroT First of all you are an ignorant by you are actually attacking me because I've replace "a" with "e" in then/than... Second who the FCK plays farmville and the other games you've mentioned? Third cloud gaming is sh*t...when I buy a game I don't want it necessarily to be a physical copy but to know I OWN it forever...not that I own the right to play a game for 3 years and then it disapears forever in the mist... So spare me the cloud gaming crap... And before you start saying that cloud gaming is bla bla bla the same thing as Steam...I don't care...I don't get my games from Steam either...I haven't lived in the 90s to know how that era was for gaming... Right now you sound like one of those upgrade maniacs that can't leave without an upgrade... Oh boy I would love to watch and would pay 10 times more money than you would on the next gen just to see people like you without technology... See this...what you are trying to prove now...this is pathetic... Not the fact that my opinion resembles on waiting for the next gen so it could actually be released more improved then it would release now...

@Darnasian btw, the devs of diablo 3 were wondering if they should port it to consoles as well. They would have to reduce the game immensely, but hey, you get more money if you release it for all these crappy current consoles. I won't doubt that they are still thinking about it.

@Darnasian First i gotta say you are killing me with your misuse of the word 'then'. 'Than' is a comparison, 'then' is an order. releasing consoles is the only way they will be able to fund R&D for better consoles. It's a business. If it doesn't pay for itself then you can't keep developing it. Also, it's not just graphics that could improve. countless things could be possible for a next gen console, like cloud gaming for example. The price might be a little high, but i know people on food stamps that buy 300$ phones. Nothing goes anywhere without money and progress. Everyone is comfortable with what we have already so console tech isn't progressing. I remember the days when consoles would come out so frequently it made your head spin because the progress and demand was so high. If a new console came out in 2 years, it'd be almost 9 years since the newest console came out. 9 years of no progress in technology is a disgrace to humanity. I'm willing to pay whatever the price of a nextgen console to get the progress going again. In the 90s alone there were a sht ton of consoles coming out, the next better than the last. We wouldn't be here now without that progress. so what now? Is this as far games will go? angry birds, minecraft, and farmville is this gaming era's cornerstone in games? pathetic.

@Sigil-otaku True, very true. And I think that's what he's "sort of" trying to say. It's almost like he's saying that they can't do anymore than they've already done, which is so not true for Nintendo but can be argued for the other two. All I want is a Nintendo console with HD graphics, a normal control scheme plus a screen on the remote, large 3rd party support, and tons of features with a great online mode. I guess I'm getting what I want!

@genjuroT Dude things are like this They can release whatever consoles they want...I don't care because if I like them I will buy them...but I don't really support this because of the high costs... Do you even contemplate how expensive next gen consoles and console games are going to be? Maybe not much from what they are now but it would still make a huge difference... A Vita game is 40$ compared to some of the greatest PSP games that were less then 30 $...hell in some cases they were less then 20 if not 10$...so the next gen has pros and cons...Before they release it I would like them to make the cons disappear so I can have the guarantee that they are selling something of value... Know what I mean?

@genjuroT You do realise that buying a new generation of consoles every 5-6 years is completely BS do you? Yeah we need to evolve but why can't we freaking find a better solution to the problem then releasing a new generation of consoles every cycle of 6 years... Release the same freaking console every 2 years but with better tech inside it and make custom graphics for console games just to please graphic whores...I don't care but I simply disagree with the next gen of consoles... Maybe the fact that I own a PS3 for less then an year influences me but not in a crucial way...I say wait 2 or 3 more years...let's say 2 because 3 it's way to much for the graphic whores... Also because then there will be better tech...better tech means better consoles then those that can be released now...

@JimmeyBurrows Those two games i mentioned are proof that companies will sometimes make a top notch game to the console's maximum and people will buy the hell out of em. I just want to see progress toward a "game of tomorrow" and consoles are dragging the game industry to a halt on that front. Maybe i just wont live that long enough to see it with the way things are going. There has, however, been a breakthrough in quantum computers recently. Maybe in 20 years we'll see a fully molecular virtual reality. doubt it, cuz they'll obviously be to busy taking our money with games so simple to make like minecraft...game tech has slowed since the 90's and I'm not comfortable with that. Looks like we're going backwards with our tech. A game like heart of darkness was 10x better than a current game like limbo. It's just sad to think about. Dev's are just realizing they don't need to work hard at all to make money.

Maybe just me but I just want to play and enjoy my games.I'm not really lookin forward to the new consoles/ DLC is outta control and the rumors of the new X-Box locking out any second hand game has got me worried. If its true i'm not going to buy it. Not only is it locking out used games but also eliminates borrowing games from friends, using the same game on multiple consoles in your household, its just stupid. And me personally would rather have a hard copy over a digital one.

@genjuroT Those 2 games came out on current gen consoles and nothing else... doesn't really disprove the theory. Simple fact is Nintendo are the only ones adding something useful to their next console, MS and Sony clearly don't plan on anything other than a slightly better gpu. If this gen showed us anything it's that people went with innovation over pure power (and that was when moving from easily noticable poly's to pretty smooth graphics) So with such a small jump coming our way why bother with it? Like you said in your other post, MS would rather keep the current console, in this thread the devs would rather keep the current consoles and it would save us consumers money as well, so clearly not a great move. Also looking at tech demo's from game engines just pushing the ps3's hardware it doesn't look like any games have really hit that maximum yet anyway... It'll be like the ps2 and the ps1, only the last few games made the most of it and that seems like a waste on the whole r&d front, since they're all chainging the consoles architecture.

In general I agree with him, we CAN afford to wait for the next gen of consoles...preferably another 5 years. Look at how amazing a properly written/programmed game can be...The Uncharted series, Demon Souls, Gears, Halo 3 , ME 3...we have miles of potential left in the current gen. Now if they could just let Kinnect die ......

@Darnasian @deadmonkey76 Stop...using...ellipsis...use...proper...punctuation... Darnasian, I dont think you realize how technology works. You Need bridges in technology to link to breakthroughs. You honestly think that cavemen could "wait" after creating the wheel and then make a car? Just so you know, PC tech is different from console tech. yes, consoles are immensely behind and that's why people need to keep pushing out the consoles every 4-5 years so the 360 doesnt end up like a supernintendo in comparison to the pc. Also,deadmonkey76, it's you're a moron, not your a moron. That's all I wanted to say to you.

@JimmeyBurrows I disagree because we see that today. examples- Metal gear solid 4 and tales of xillia( which isn't in the U.S.). these games are some of the only games to fully utilize the ps3's "maximum" and they were huge in japan, not just 10k people bought them lol.

@ccusick i literally read a hardware analyst's article that said MS doesn't want to release a new console because the current 360 is still making money, and that was straight from the company.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Old consoles make money. New consoles don't. Especially the years of paying people to make a new console that is not for sale yet. That loses a ton of money. So yeah, they make their money back after a while, but to research, design, promote, etc. leads to: Making New Console = Losing Money (for a while).
