James Bond Bosses On Why Potential Actors Might Be Scared Off By The Role

"It's a big commitment. It's not just showing up for a couple of months of filming."

James Bond movie series producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have provided an update on the search for the next actor to play the iconic British superspy.

Speaking to Variety, the pair said it's still "early days" in the search for the next James Bond actor. Whoever gets the role will need to sign on for numerous films over a decade, Broccoli said.

"The thing is, it's going to be a couple of years off," she said. "And when we cast Bond, it's a 10-, 12-year commitment. So he's probably thinking, 'Do I really want that thing?' Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it]."

Craig played James Bond in five films, ending with 2021's No Time To Die. He wasn't always a lock to come back for No Time To Die, as he made headlines saying he would rather "slash my wrists" than come back, but he later explained what he really meant to say.

One name that has popped up for the role of James Bond is British actor Idris Elba. Broccoli and Wilson said they have not spoken to Elba, but Wilson said Elba is "great" and Broccoli praised him, too. "We love Idris," she said.

Also in the interview, Broccoli said the next James Bond movie will be a "reinvention" of the character, and it could take some time to find the right person. "It's about a reinvention, and, 'Where are we taking it? What do we want to do with the character?'" she said. "And then, once we figure that out, who's the right person for that particular reinvention?"

"It's a big commitment. It's not just showing up for a couple of months of filming," she said.

As for the evolution of James Bond the character, recent films starring Daniel Craig have showed more of Bond's emotions, and there will be more changes coming in the next films. Broccoli said the fictional character, known for his womanizing in earlier entries, is "evolving just as men are evolving."

Before this, Broccoli said the next person to play James Bond will likely be a British man of any ethnicity or race.

"I think it will be a man because I don't think a woman should play James Bond," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men's roles. I don't think there are enough great roles for women, and it's very important to me that we make movies for women about women. He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race]."

This lines up closely with what Craig himself has said about the future of the series. Craig said in an interview that he is not on board with the idea of a woman playing James Bond, but commented that women and people of color should get other roles of a similar stature.

"The answer to that is very simple," he told Radio Times. "There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?"

In addition to a new actor coming aboard to play James Bond in the inevitable next 007 movie, the expected 26th Bond movie will be made by Amazon, which recently acquired MGM. Broccoli said she's been told "things are not going to change" and that the next Bond movie will be an MGM film produced under the banner of Amazon. People are naturally wondering if Amazon might look to put the next Bond film on Amazon Prime Video, but whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

Outside of the films, Hitman developer IO Interactive is developing a new James Bond game that tells an origin story for the British spy. Additionally, the iconic James Bond game GoldenEye is coming to Switch and Xbox.

Oh please, there is no actor being scared off of playing James Bond. F'ing Daniel Craig made 30-50 million playing bond in one film alone. I think that is plenty of reasons to suck it up and put on the tuxedo.

I personally would like Bond to go back to the over the top Bond that was Sean Connery, a superhero movie before superhero... movies. A Bond that could scrap it out in a fight, blow up some bad guys, jump in a car, that was a plane, and then a boat, and wrestle a guy in a swamp, before walking out with a perfectly pressed tuxedo, a dry martini and a bond girl on his arm. A bond that was, politically incorrect for these times, that fought bad guys with metal teeth, and midge... small people with daggers, and asian with bowler hats that could chop a head off.... come on man give us some good bad guys. Not these pharmaceutical, energy corporation ceos, politicians .... (like real evil in the world), give us some cool over the top bad guys.. And cool Bond girls with names like Pus$y Galore, Fiona Folpe, Onatopp, Goodhead, Plenty O'Toole ..... OMG, come on.

Daniel Craigs bond was so boring.... a emo, 12 step, in therapy, lovelorn, vegan, german sense of humor -boring ass bond.... most unlikeable character ever. Craig is a fine actor, just meant how bond was written, and to be honest, Daniel Craig acted like he was getting a root canal having to play bond, in every movie, in every scene.

AS for the bond actor.... hmmm I would like for it to be either... Idris Elba for his work on BBC Luther.... amazing. Ewan McGregor for his work in well countless movies but I would say... my favorite, Big Fish. Tessa Thompson for her work on London stage and HBOs west world. And Tom Hardy for his physical roles, and the movie Legend. So Elba, McGregor, Thompson, Hardy is my top picks.

@jenovaschilld: While you have a solid list; I cannot see them committing to a 10 to 12 year commitment to play Bond... It would have to be someone younger like Tom Holland, Richard Madden or Kit Harrington, possibly Charlie Cox?

@Radnen: Any of those would be fine by me also. I prefer strong actors, that have the charisma to play bond. Sean Connery, damn he was so good. He could scrap on the ground and pull off walking into a high stakes casino with no sweat.

Yeah, those actors, I choose are .... seasoned for sure.

Another person I would have no problem with would be, Robert Pattinson. With his The Lighthouse, The King, and Tenet he shows he can do a wider serious range while also a lighter side.

As for Tom Holland.... he could pull it off, but he always looks so youthful even though he is near 30 by now. I am not a Kit Harrington fan so far, I would need to see him in some roles that shows a wider range. Richard Madden and Charlie Cox, I would be on board for sure.

I just hope they make Bond fun again, and even though Craig Bond films did well enough at the box office, I have no interest at all in watching them again. But some of the older bond films, you can watch over and over again. Worse bond.... to me, was probably Timothy Dalton, not him as an actor, just they really were bad films, and yeah he seemed as uncomfortable as Craig did later on. AT least in the early Craig bond films he seemed to have a plan of where he wanted to take bond, even if it was .... weird.

@jenovaschilld: Yeah, I agree, though I think the last Craig Bond film I could watch again and again, despite it's sad subject matter.

Tom Holland does look perpetually young; but can stand in for a younger James Bond type... But I can see that going nowhere with audiences. Robert Pattinson is a great choice not sure how his Batman experience will tie him up.

Whoever the next actor is, he should just make it his own. Like Craig did.

@sebb: Agree. I also think Idris Elba would be great in the role of 007. He got the range and carisma.

@jaydee4: No I agree, he would be amazing in the role. Like you said, the guy oozes charisma and as a celebrity he's popular on many continents. The problem is that there are ensecure people who would not like to see him in the role because of his skin color.

The question was broached in an article here and they went nuts at the idea of him doing it. He says that he wouldn't want to do it anyway.

@jaydee4: They don't crank these 007 movies out that quick, so I don't know about multiple movies. But I really like Idris Alba, I would absolutely love to see him in a one-off, or, (stay with me here), get him as a Bond villain. He would absolutely kill that s**t!

At this point though, he is so exhausted with being asked that question that he has unequivocally stated he would never do it. A shame. 🤷‍♀️

@thecupidstunts: OMG! that is a good idea. The new bond would be 3-4 of the most popular bond picks, who then have to spy-off, and the one left standing ... .the new bond and maybe one of the losers.... a new bond villain.
