During the round of announcements that James Gunn revealed for the new slate of the DC Universe movies and television series saw some of the most famous characters in the DC pantheon return to the big screen once again, including Swamp Thing and Supergirl.

The last Supergirl film was in the 1980's following the success of Christopher Reeves' Superman movies starring Helen Slater (who went on to voice other DC characters like Talia al-Ghul on Batman: The Animated Series).

This film will be based on the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comics run of the same title from 2021 and 2022. Woman of Tomorrow featured Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. Gunn's plan is to turn that limited series into a "big, science-fiction, epic film."

"Now Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton," Gunn explained on his Twitter. "She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she's a much more jaded character."

The comic series received numerous award nominations, including several Eisners. No casting or release date was revealed. It is noted that Supergirl will be appearing in the upcoming Flash movie, played by Sasha Calle.
