James Gunn Will Co-Lead DC Studios, Steering Upcoming DCEU Movies, Shows, And Cartoons

The Peacemaker and Suicide Squad filmmaker James Gunn, alongside TV veteran Peter Safran, will head the direction of DC television, film, and animation going forward.

With former DC Film president Walter Hamada officially out of the company, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have been named to lead DC's film, TV, and animation projects as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, which was formerly DC Films.

The succession of Gunn and Safran ends a month-long search for the recently-merged Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav, who had been looking for a "Kevin Feige" type figure to run that part of the studio. Gunn commented on his new position, but simply tweeting his excitement for things to come, albeit brief.

Gunn and Safran will now helm all of the development and execution of a long-term plan for many of the characters and properties of DC Comics. In addition to those responsibilities, Gunn and Safran will develop, direct, and produce their own projects.

Gunn will focus on the creative side, while Safran will handle the business and production side. They also will report directly to Zaslav and work closely with new Warners film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy.

"DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe," said Zaslav in a statement (via THR), explaining why they felt like the right choice. "Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling."

Gunn helmed both The Suicide Squad soft reboot and brought his Peacmaker spin-off series to HBO Max, and both were met with critical acclaim and solid ratings. Safran has been able to build upon The Conjuring Universe and produce DC films such as Aquaman, Shazam! (and their upcoming sequels), The Suicide Squad, and many others under his banner and through his first-look deal with Warner Bros.

A sea change in how people perceive DC's movie offerings is the first thing that needs to happen. Trying to shoot for the moon is bound to fail, not because they can't make a great product, but because no one will give it a fair shake. Marvel fanboys will poison the well, no matter the quality, DC fanboys are always over the moon, even for mediocre, and professional critics are just theater nerds for sale (perhaps pay them more since a lot of folks still think they have something to offer). DC's movie motto should be, "Just don't suck," and go from there.

I work in a very old building. So much of it has been repainted over the years, however no one ever strips the old layers of paint off or primes the surface first. So after a few years it ends up needing to be repainted yet again. And the cycle continues.

What the DCEU really needs is just some decent efforts in film and television. It does not need to hit home runs, it needs to at least get on base. He or anyone cannot fix the DC media .... in a year, in two. It will take a bit.

Start off with some

-decent quality outings and story telling, and much better use of cgi,

-along with some R rated IPs also. Like John Constantine or Jason Todd... -

-I would push for the Batgirl movie release, as a good faith sign to dc fans and the actors, artists, and creators who make these properties. Instead of using it as a tax write off.

-have the current Batman clash with the Joker and finish up that trilogy

-reboot wonder woman unless the 3rd film is contractually binding, if not finish it up and then reboot it

-Continue on with aquaman, shazam, and the recent SS.

-Black Adam and Superman and Shazam, might be interesting as long as you have a decent overall villain. But considering how poorly Black Adam has been received, it may all be a non starter.

-As for the TV side of things, DC was having more success on that then marvel was. But with the current Honey boo boo CEO taking over WB discovery, who is still killing off properties for the 2.5 billion tax corporate write off.... (sigh F$# me.) You would have to wait, and see what the after math of all this is gonna be.

-Reboot Spawn for TV and make it mature. Reboot judge dredd for tv and give it better humor.

If I was Gunn I would try to buy up all of Top Cow IPs, Image, dark horse, etc before Disney does. I love DC comics but their headliners are boring as shit. With these IPs under a DCU banner it would really help the Justice League and the universe a lot. Fathom and Hellboy would be a much needed shot in the arm.

It is gonna take time, the damage was extensive. Gunn makes really good, and fun movie movies. If left alone, he might be the best thing for DC right now.

@jenovaschilld: Lol the first WW is one of the strongest movies in the DCU catalog (thanks to Snyder).

No one wants to see Batgirl, it doesn’t fit in with the current vision for the DCU. Let it go, already. And by current Batman, I hope you’re not referring to Pattinson. Affleck is the Batman of the DCU. We want kick ass action, not boring Reeves’ Batman.

And, no, DC has plenty of properties without buying Image characters. Lol where do you get these crazy ideas from?

@bat725:

Well WW84' really hurt.

Even Affleck couldn't get pulled back to do another batman.

And I stand by it, DC characters (as much of a fan I am of them, are boring as our fathers... wait our great grandfathers heroes), a shot in the arm could help a ton.

As for Batgirl, just put it up on YT or HBO as a documentary, or give it to fans to finish. Consumer choice.

The DCEU is so much of a mess. You couldn't fix it with 3 genie wishes.

@illegal_peanut: Well, we got two wishes so far: Hamada is out and Cavill is back.

Now, get Affleck back and bring in the Russo Bros. to direct Justice League after a nice build-up.

Hopefully he can come up with a creative way to erase the complete disaster that Snyder made out of the Superman film franchise. Jonathan Kent's death in Man of Steel will forever be known as one of the dumbest scenes in the history of motion pictures, in a movie filled with stupid moments (ice climb another mountain, Lois). Then he topped it with that Martha crap.

@timthegem: He doesn’t need to erase anything. Just move forward and don’t look back.

As for Lois, she’s always doing dumb shit, like jumping in Niagara Falls, or hiding under an elevator in the Eiffel Tower. It’s kinda her m.o.

@bat725: Watch the Richard Donner cut of Superman II if you haven't seen it. Big difference. He managed to make that Lois seem clever and even a little sexy.
