Japan Charts Nov. 26-Dec. 2: Wii Fit debuts in second place

Nintendo's physical-training sim sells 261,000 but is beaten out by Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, which sold 294,000.

At this year's E3 Media and Business Summit, Nintendo revealed what it hopes to be the biggest thing since brain training, Wii Fit. Bundled with the Wii Balance Board, Wii Fit is Nintendo's flagship installment in the physical training genre, and features minigames designed around the fundamental concepts of aerobics, muscle conditioning, yoga, and balance. As noted in October, Japanese gamers would be the first to don their jumpsuits on December 1, with the game cartwheeling to the rest of the world presumably in 2008.

With sales expectations high for Wii Fit, Japanese gamers have shown their enthusiasm for Nintendo's latest health initiative by purchasing 261,000 units in the game's first two days on the market, according to the latest figures from Japanese industry trackers Media Create for the week ended December 2. While impressive, the showing was only enough to secure the number two slot in the week's best-sellers chart. Trumping Wii Fit was Level 5's Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, which sold 294,000 units in its first week at retail.

The rest of Japan's weekly sales chart was likewise dominated by newcomers. Namco Bandai's SD Gundam G Generation Spirits secured the third position with 252,000 units, while Capcom's Sengoku Basara 2: Heroes ranked fifth with 95,000 copies sold. Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed managed a strong showing in its first week--for an Xbox 360 game, at least--with the version for Microsoft's console landing in slot eight with 41,000 units. (The PS3 version of the game has not yet been released in Japan.) Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters World Championship 2008 rounded out the top 10 with 35,000 units sold.

Returning this week were Square Enix's Dragon Quest IV for the DS at slot four, which sold 135,000 units for the week and 732,000 lifetime to date. At six, Nintendo's Mario Party DS sold 80,000 copies this week, bringing its lifetime total in Japan to 539,000, while Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 for the PlayStation 2 secured seventh with 74,000 units for the week and 368,000 lifetime. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii landed in the ninth slot with 41,000 units sold, bringing its total to 103,000.

Japan Game Chart Week of November 26, 2007

1. Prof. Layton and Pandora's Box - 294,000 / DS
2. Wii Fit - 261,000 / Wii
3. SD Gundam G Generation Spirits - 252,000 / PS2
4. Dragon Quest IV - 135,000 / DS
5. Sengoku Basara 2: Heroes - 95,000 / PS2
6. Mario Party DS - 80,000 / DS
7. World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 - 74,000 / PS2
8. Assassin's Creed - 41,000 / X360
9. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 41,000 / Wii
10. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters World Championship 2008 - 35,000 / DS

Rankings based on Media Create figures from November 26-December 2, 2007.

"MrSickVisionz" NO, it's not a "DATING GAME"... It's an adventure puzzle game by LEVEL-5. I seriously don't think the Dark Cloud Series and Dragon Quest Series is ANYTHING closely related to dating games!

Why is everyone saying "go to a god damn gym..." Wii Fit doesn;t aim to get people physically fit, but moreso get them active. And personally if I think Wii Fit encourages people to get fit. I know I would love to get fitter whilst playing games. Its cheaper and going to a "god damn" gym is boring to a lot of people. Until you actually start to get fit and enjoy the workouts, I say go for Wii Fit. Plis how many obese kids do you think are going to hit a gym at such a young age? I go to a gym, and keep in shape, but it costs a fortune, so I may buy Wii Fit and enjoy cardiovascular workouts at home. At the moment I am doing a set number of push ups everytime I die in Mario Galaxy...and I am starting to die a lot. Who said games can;t make you fit?

Oh and ColdFire, Japanese women still won't sleep with you just because you idolize everything about their country. (everything you wrote is wrong anyways, the Japanese are just as consumerist as americans, if not more so).

Everyone that likes wii fit should get to a god damn gym. You might actually lose weight that way rather than simply looking like an idiot.

ColdfireTrilogy: What are you talking about? Did you just want a reason to take a swipe at Halo 3? It would have sold an insane amount even if it did not have Gamer Fuel or Master Chief themed Doritos. As for Japanese gamers, again, what are you talking about. Except for Assassinn's Creed the rest of games on the top ten list are either sequels or had games about those characters before. Wii Fit was also one of the most advertised games in Japan this past month.

TheBrainSquid I stopped paying attention to the Japanese charts a while ago when I realized that anything, good or horrendously bad (Blue Dragon) can get on their top ten list... and now Wii Fit, something that's not even a game, is on it. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>It is just the same with the US and Europ charts....and btw, Blue Dragon is not as bad as some make it out to be, especially the original japanese version which hasn't (obviously) suffered by the "lost in translation" syndrome.

I am definitely picking up Wii Fit as soon as it hits the states. I can't imagine it will be that awesome of a "game" but I really think it will be a great piece of software that might give me a good incentive to get into better shape. I really love where video games are going. They started as simple toys for the young, but they can be so much more. With games like Brain Age and Wii Fit, games are taking their place as a comparable media format to videos or books. And learning through a game is so much more fun and interactive then watching a video or reading a book.

To say japanese game charts are pointless and filled with wierd stuff is to not look at Japan as a different society. We here are all about buying what adverts and corporations throw at us saying its the best. Just look at the top 10 games... halo3 ... heck its mainly advertising that made it so much better than anything else out. Honestly many other console games would've done that much better, US gamers ride on hype, Japanese gamers buy fringe games a lot more than us and take a lot more risks in their purchases ... its just part of who they are. Thats why so much of this looks different.

Ouch @ Mario Galaxy not being on there. "Never heard of Prof. Layton and Pandora's Box though. I wonder what kinda game it must be if it were to be No. 1 on the sales chart." Knowing the JPN, its probably a dating sim.

As usual, Nintendo leads not only in sales but innovation. Never heard of Prof. Layton and Pandora's Box though. I wonder what kinda game it must be if it were to be No. 1 on the sales chart.

I wish the balance board was a bit bigger. the potential for snowboard, skateboard and surfing games is MASSIVE. Analog stick to turn? No more.. just lean into your turns. Thatd be awesome.

The NES may have saved console gaming (after the failure of Atari) but i'm sure PC gaming would have continued to be successful regardless if the NES phenomenon had occured..oh and a balance board is not going to make me buy a wii..more quality games please (excluding the Nintendo franchises)

" hope the Wii suffers a massive sales slump and leads nintendo to bankrupt, I hate nintendo." Gaming wouldn't exist if it weren't nintendo since people back then called gaming a fad. All gamers should thank nintendo for the great gray box of gaming,.. the NES.

With all the McDonald's and obesity raging here in the US and with most people having limited time and money to actually go to a gym, Wii Fit does seem like a pretty good alternative. Mind you, I'd never get Wii Fit, but I live in Alaska and most people don't have the luxury of being able to run outside for miles eight months out of the year.

mhder: I kind of agree with you. The balance board has a lot of potential and it could be used in so many other ways other than exercise. Besides, joining a gym and paying yearly memberships are expensive. I'd rather just buy one package that I could use to exercise for years and years to come.
