Japan Charts Nov. 26-Dec. 2: Wii Fit debuts in second place

Nintendo's physical-training sim sells 261,000 but is beaten out by Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, which sold 294,000.

At this year's E3 Media and Business Summit, Nintendo revealed what it hopes to be the biggest thing since brain training, Wii Fit. Bundled with the Wii Balance Board, Wii Fit is Nintendo's flagship installment in the physical training genre, and features minigames designed around the fundamental concepts of aerobics, muscle conditioning, yoga, and balance. As noted in October, Japanese gamers would be the first to don their jumpsuits on December 1, with the game cartwheeling to the rest of the world presumably in 2008.

With sales expectations high for Wii Fit, Japanese gamers have shown their enthusiasm for Nintendo's latest health initiative by purchasing 261,000 units in the game's first two days on the market, according to the latest figures from Japanese industry trackers Media Create for the week ended December 2. While impressive, the showing was only enough to secure the number two slot in the week's best-sellers chart. Trumping Wii Fit was Level 5's Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, which sold 294,000 units in its first week at retail.

The rest of Japan's weekly sales chart was likewise dominated by newcomers. Namco Bandai's SD Gundam G Generation Spirits secured the third position with 252,000 units, while Capcom's Sengoku Basara 2: Heroes ranked fifth with 95,000 copies sold. Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed managed a strong showing in its first week--for an Xbox 360 game, at least--with the version for Microsoft's console landing in slot eight with 41,000 units. (The PS3 version of the game has not yet been released in Japan.) Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters World Championship 2008 rounded out the top 10 with 35,000 units sold.

Returning this week were Square Enix's Dragon Quest IV for the DS at slot four, which sold 135,000 units for the week and 732,000 lifetime to date. At six, Nintendo's Mario Party DS sold 80,000 copies this week, bringing its lifetime total in Japan to 539,000, while Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 for the PlayStation 2 secured seventh with 74,000 units for the week and 368,000 lifetime. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii landed in the ninth slot with 41,000 units sold, bringing its total to 103,000.

Japan Game Chart Week of November 26, 2007

1. Prof. Layton and Pandora's Box - 294,000 / DS
2. Wii Fit - 261,000 / Wii
3. SD Gundam G Generation Spirits - 252,000 / PS2
4. Dragon Quest IV - 135,000 / DS
5. Sengoku Basara 2: Heroes - 95,000 / PS2
6. Mario Party DS - 80,000 / DS
7. World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 - 74,000 / PS2
8. Assassin's Creed - 41,000 / X360
9. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 41,000 / Wii
10. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters World Championship 2008 - 35,000 / DS

Rankings based on Media Create figures from November 26-December 2, 2007.

I find this sort of game odd and a little waste of time and electricity , i mean come on get you're arse off the floor and go out into the real world for a little exercise , plugging in a console to a tv so you can do it at home when you can just go outside aint very environmentally friendly now is it lol .

odpr & slayersdeath200: The PS3 version wasn't released yet, and, if sales are any indicator, the Japanese would much rather get the PS3 than a 360. You guys didn't actually read the article but still felt compelled to type your fanboy comments, right?

-Ronin-_basic In Asia, not many people work out as much as Americans, so they need all the exercise they need. Are you serious? Americans excercise? do you not know that America has a weight problem? Man... you just need to walk around the malls and you loose count with ho many people weight 300+ also...hmm... Mario Galaxy isn't doing well in Japan at all.... I didn't think it was gonna get bumped off the top 10 so quickly... Sold less the 35,000. I wonder where it ended up.

No its not a simulation, simulations can be fun, this is not fun, this is an extremely expensive aerobics video which MISLEADS people into believing it is something more than that. People will not get fit using the Wii Fit and those that actually buy it for that purpose are in reality being ripped off by a cheap gimmick. I hold this 'game' in the same category as all those quick fix fad diets: a clever way to make money without actually helping anyone improve their lifestyle.

gun_blade25 Thank you for educating me. ------------- Thank YOU for taking what I said out of context. The only problem with that is that unlike the other examples I listed, this one isn't just a simulation. While it probably won't get people in to the best shape they've ever been in, it encourages activity. Not just finger movement. And as I said earlier (which you undoubtedly ignored): "it's cheaper, easier, and much more entertaining." Just wanted to bring that up again, seeing as it's an incentive, and all.

peacenutman In Asia, not many people work out as much as Americans, so they need all the exercise they need. ----------------- Do you have any idea what it's like in Japan? They don't need to 'work out' gym-style, because they're active enough as it is. People there work virtually every day. Their work ethic is nearly suicidal. In addition to school, kids usually have some kind of club or team they're a part of, keeping them busy every day. Their diet is heavy on fish, vegetables, rice, etc. Not much meat, lots of protein. Their lifestyle, combined with their diet is probably why so many people are thin.

juggleballz Why is everyone saying "go to a god damn gym..." ------------- Because rather than lodge a legitimate criticism, it's easier to dismiss something you're not interested in outright. Let's be realistic, folks: a good number of people would rather give Wii Fit a go than join a gym for the same reason that Guitar Hero fans probably won't pick up a real guitar; it's cheaper, easier, and much more entertaining. Apply that same school of thought to anything else. Why play Madden when you could try going pro in the NFL? Why play team games online when you could go outside and play Capture the Flag? Why play DDR (at home or the arcade) when you could take some real dance lessons? Again: cheaper, easier, and more entertaining. Video games are an escape; people can enjoy something with the unpleasant parts cut out. Now, on topic: for only 2 days, that's an impressive showing. I know they were probably more interested in Japan than we are here, but that's still much more than I expected.

60 calories changing the channel? Give me some of that crack yo! Maybe if you had to run 1/2 km to get to your TV. Unless you weigh upwards of 400 pounds, in which case you might just be correct. In the future try doing some research first. If you lost 60 cal from changing the channel most American's would have already died of extreme starvation. tldr: you're an idiot (dum)

"I'll wager two hours on the Wii will help you burn at least 3-4 calories. Thats like 1 mountain dew every 3 months. Way to shoot for the stars." 3-4 calories? dude it takes like 60 or something calories just to get up and turn the channel on the television, and If you do things like pushups or whatever you do on the Wii fit thingy for 2 hours, your not just gonna burn 3-4 calories (thats just dum)

Anything that gets people up and moving as they play is a good thing. A lot of people are too self conscious to go to the gym or even go jogging, some just find exercise boring. If wii fit gets them moving and stretching while dressing it up as some kind of even remotely "fun" game then that's great. I just hope the bundled software has a decent complement of exercises as 3rd parties never seem to use the Wiis hardware anywhere near as well as Nintendo themselves do.

Telling people who play Wii Fit to go to a gym is like telling someone who plays Guitar Hero and Rock Band to learn a real instrument. (Although Wii Fit is a lot cheaper than an actual gym membership or any workout equipment, and you can do it all in the privacy of your own home, plus the balancing board may be useful for other games in the future like snowboarding, since you can't do that year round in real life.) Anyways, sounds like a pretty cool idea. I know Boxing on Wii Sports can get you totally in shape (if you play it right, I've seen some kids just sit in a chair and flick the remotes, which totally defeats the purpose...)

@ bardkieran are you for real to compare exercise to snowboarding the fact that people are that lazy to go to the gym or run around the block is the problem If anyone work out here knows that anyone who buy this game is going to work out for about a month then pop in Mario and never turning back. It's a Mind set to get in shape Not a gimick.

As Lewis Black once said.. 'There should be a shrink at every Gym cause there is too many mirrors in there, people are so in love with themselves and their egos are so big in there they are eating themselves." Good Job Nintendo, inovating, as usual. And that aint do bad for a two day run imo.

For those saying to go to a gym instead of playing Wii fit:

Stop playing Guitar Hero, learn to play a real guitar.Stop playing Rock Band and join a real one.Stop playing Amped and SSX and go snowboard.Stop playing wresting games and join the WWEStop playing Madden and go join an NFL team.Stop playing Grand Theft Auto and go on a killing spree in a major city.

See the point? Wii fit is just a game with an interactive method of getting in shape, plus it comes at a much cheaper cost than a gym membership.
