Japan game charts: May 29-June 4

New Super Mario Brothers remains at the top of the heap and Metroid Prime Hunters debuts at number four as the Japanese continue to train their brains.

Media-Create has rolled out its Japanese console game sales figures for the week of May 29 through June 4. Regarding the software market overall, the industry-research firm stated that sales were stagnant for the week, citing the "absence of any remarkable new titles" as the main reason.

New Super Mario Brothers held onto its number one position, and the rest of the top 10 was once again dominated by games for the DS. Considering the limited popularity of first-person shooters in Japan, Metroid Prime Hunters put in a strong debut showing at number four.

And what would a Japanese best-seller chart be without a brain-training game? Once again, this week saw perennial DS favorites Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day stay near the top of the charts, remaining in second and third, respectively. The top 10 played host to two other DS brainteasers: Tetris DS (sixth) and Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Duke (eighth).

Only one other portable game, Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable for the PSP (10th) cracked the Japanese top 10 the week of May 29-June 4. The remaining two slots were taken by two returning Konami sports games--the soccer sim World Soccer Winning Eleven 10 (fifth) and the baseball sim Jikkyou Powerful Major League (ninth).

The only game to drop off the charts during the week was the PS2 dating sim KimiKiss, which finished in sixth place the week before.

We should give a damn about what the Japanese play because they influence over two-thirds of the console market's direction. Unless you don't mind waiting 3-4 years for another Halo, praying for Psychonauts 2, or, y'know, whatever they're making in the UK these days.

If a console in Japan is big (like DS) it means Japanese developers will make games for the system. As you can see, DS owning the charts means support for the PSP won't get any better soon (over there of course). That's why Microsoft is trying hard to sell their system in ***. PS2 had alot of Japanese exclusives that sold well all over the world, whereas Xbox... yada yada yada, you know the rest of the story.

Wow! 7 of the 10 games are for the 360! And I don't even see a DS game in sight! Good job, 360! That's about the 1,000,000,000th time you have been first in game sells in Japan! Congratulations!

I'm so glad Microsoft will lose in Japan because I will not have see MS try to make those old cutesy games redone for Xbox360. Japan might be the motherland but they're not the originators of video games.

Just two PS2 games and both sport themed? Where did JRPGs go? Oh, and I have another doubt, if these people only buy games for portable systems when do they work? Seems out of home not. Farewell~~!!

I'd like to see worldwide software sales comparisons between DS and PSP. We know DS is ahead in hardware, but they must be destroying in software also.

We pretty much owe ourselves to japan, as it is the video game motherland. I still give them props and I love anime, dig their art and their style. Maybe a little crazy, but definately a country of the imagination. looks like it will be hard for MS to make a claim there...

The reason that you should care what the Japanese are doing is that everything comes from there first. Games, Anime, and even mobile phones if something get big in Japan most of the time it will get big here. Need I say Pokemon, Yu-Gi-oh and DBZ. Games like FF, Mario or DQ. Where games from the US stay in the US like Halo.

Wow, forget DS, that's old news, the real news is that Metroid Prime Hunters is actually selling well in Japan. The Japanese hated the GC primes (as well as FPS's in general). Maybe the Japanese are finaly starting to warm up to western-style games, eh?

Hey man, KimiKiss was pretty good. Only problems there were in it was the lack of a Tsundere character and the underclassman character's ending sucked. I liked Tsuyokiss better though.

When you spend as much time on trains etc, portables are the best. When your homes are small and you might have to fight over the tv to play games, portables are the perfect solution. Some may think that Japanese gamers only play DS games but the main reason games like brain training are selling in incredible numbers is because they were able to draw in adults who didn't play games earlier (the new demographic/the previous non gamers). The trick will be to keep feeding those people with similar games.
