When Matt Damon starred in 2007's action blockbuster The Bourne Ultimatum, it was assumed that it would be his last appearance as amnesiac superspy Jason Bourne. But with 2012's attempted franchise reboot The Bourne Legacy stalling at the box office, Damon has reunited with director Paul Greengrass for a fifth part of the series. Now Damon has provided an update on the film's progress, and what fans can expect.

In an interview with Variety, Damon explained that production was "about halfway through." "We started in September but they're going dark for most of December and cutting basically the first two acts," he said. "And then we have the third act and then whatever we owe from the first two acts. We're going to Vegas for the third act. Big car chase on the strip."

Damon went on to talk about his decision to return to the Bourne franchise after nearly a decade away. "I wasn't sure [about making more movies]," he said. "I hoped I wasn't because I really liked the franchise and the character but I didn't see a way to go [forward]. But I wasn't giving up on the idea of doing it. Paul and I kind of talked years ago about perhaps the way forward was just to let time pass and allow the world to change a little.

"Technically when the Bourne character disappears, it's still 2004. So when this next one comes out in '16, it will have been 12 years--in movie years--that the character as been off the grid. So what's happened in those intervening years gives you a story."

The fifth Bourne film is still untitled, but it is scheduled for release on July 29, 2016. It co-stars Vincent Cassell, Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles, and Tommy Lee Jones.
