Jeff Bezos Says LOTR: The Rings Of Power Is A "Responsibility," Not All About Making Money

"I hope we do Tolkien's work justice," the founder of Amazon says.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has commented on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, saying in a new interview that he hopes the show does J.R.R. Tolkien's work justice. It's not all about making money, he said.

"Middle-earth is such a beloved world, and telling the story of the forging of The Rings of Power is a privilege and a responsibility. I hope we do Tolkien's work justice," he told Time. "It goes beyond making a commercially successful show. Everyone working on the show read these stories as kids and our hearts are in it."

The Rings of Power is a very expensive TV series, considered by some estimates to be the costliest TV show ever made. Amazon reportedly paid $250 million for the rights alone, before $468 million in production costs for the first season, Time reported. In addition to these fees, Amazon aired a Rings of Power ad during this year's Super Bowl at a cost of about $13 million, the report said.

Bezos, who is said to be a big fan of the fantasy genre, was reportedly personally involved in Amazon's negotiations years ago to acquire the Lord of the Rings rights. Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon last year and is now the company's executive chairman of the board.

The eight-episode first season of The Rings of Power premieres September 1 on Prime Video with two episodes to kick things off. The remaining six will debut each Friday until Season 1 ends on October 14.

In other Lord of the Rings news, Grand Theft Auto company Take-Two recently announced that its Private Division unit is making a Lord of the Rings video game with Weta's gaming division.

I'm not as big of a LOTR fan as some, but a lot of those people are saying they are screwing up the lore big time. That's the problem with a lot of properties now (Marvel, Star Wars - except The Mandalorian, this) is that none of the people involved care about lore/canon. They all rush out to say how they are huge fans, but it's clear to the real fans that they aren't.

Whether he's being truthful or not, I think that's the way to approach it and it seems to be what studios are lacking today.

If you treat the material with the respect it deserves, it will be successful and it will make money.

I lost the count of how many times a Stephen King movie came out, great expectations because the book was great and in the end, the movie just sh*ts all over it.

Take Interview with a Vampire. The Movie with Cruise, Pitt and Banderas was good, but didn't capture the book, at all. Now there's a TV show coming up where they take the book and smear sh*t all over it to push some "diversity" agenda.

And don't even get me started on Marvel.

So, in the end, I really hope he's telling the truth, cause that can be a real turning point for prime video.

You're about to butcher one of the greatest tales ever told and you actually managed to tell yourself you're doing it justice, impressive.

Guess this is what it takes to become a billionaire.

Inclusivity, along with a completely butchered story, has already ruined the show before it's even had a chance...

Remember when he used billions to go into space like, 4 minutes when that money could have been used to help potentially hundreds of thousands of people?

And then he shot William Shatner with champagne while he was trying to talk.

What a dick.

Whatever Jeff. If it wasn't about money you wouldn't be charging people to see it.
