Joaquin Phoenix Quits Movie 5 Days Before Filming, Report Details "Huge Amount Of Outrage"

Phoenix and Top Gun's Danny Ramirez were supposed to star in the gay romance movie from director Todd Haynes.

Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix has abandoned his latest film, just five days before it was due to begin filming, amid a rumor that the actor got "cold feet."

Variety reports that Phoenix has left the film, an untitled gay romance movie from Todd Haynes (I'm Not There, Carol). Phoenix was very involved in the film, developing the screenplay with Haynes and Jon Raymond. Full sets had been built in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the film was already sold to distributors.

The site reported that the movie is now "in peril," and that Phoenix's part "cannot be recast." All of the crew and stakeholders are waiting to be paid, and losses for the movie could "exceed seven figures." Variety mentioned Phoenix potentially getting "cold feet," but it's not immediately clear why.

On August 14, The Hollywood Reporter published a story on the fallout. It cited an anonymous studio executive who said, "There's been a huge amount of outrage" over the Phoenix situation. After all, it was Phoenix who himself brought the movie to Haynes in the first place.

Phoenix could now face legal consequences, the report said. "According to multiple sources, Phoenix got cold feet in the leadup to the production, though the reasons remain murky," the publication said.

The report added that Phoenix is known to be this way, as he is said to have threatened to leave the Ridley Scott movie Napoleon unless Paul Thomas Anderson was hired to do re-writes.

"According to sources, some producers have idly talked about blackballing Phoenix over the Haynes departure, but most acknowledge that's not realistic, particularly given that Joker 2... is expected to be a hit," The Hollywood Reporter said.

One agent not involved in the Phoenix/Haynes situation said Phoenix is unlikely to suffer any real consequences from walking out of the movie. This source predicted that Phoenix will pay a fee in the area of low-seven figures to cover the costs associated with him abruptly leaving the film.

"As long as they threaten, he'll settle. It's nothing to him," this person said.

Top Gun: Maverick actor Danny Ramirez was announced as the co-star for the film, which was a love story between two men set in the 1930s. Haynes said he intended the film to carry an NC-17 rating and feature explicit sexual content.

Separately, Deadline reported that Phoenix "walked off set" in late July. The report also mentioned how Ramirez flew to San Diego for Comic-Con not knowing if the Haynes movie would actually be made.

This isn't the first time a movie featuring Phoenix has shut down just before filming was due to commence. In 2023, the indie film The Island starring Phoenix and Rooney Mara was shut down on the eve of filming due to issues with its insurance coverage.

Phoenix will be seen next in the DC movie Joker: Folie a Deux, the long-awaited sequel to the 2019 film that he won an Oscar for. Phoenix is also set to appear in Ari Aster's Eddington.

Why wouldn't they cast an actual gay person

@dushness: It was his project that he was trying to get made. That's kind of why they can't just recast his part. He was involved in every aspect of it.

@dushness: Because they know that Joaquin Phoenix puts butts in seats. And if they got an actual homosexual to play the role it wouldn't have brought in that much revenue.

@dushness: Psst....because it's acting. Much like they didn't cast a real wizard for LOTR, and instead cast Ian. Same reason they didn't try to cast a real Vulcan and got Leonard Nimoy instead.

@esqueejy: Awww how cute. Dude is too thick to understand the point of my statement. Acting is a job. To PRETEND you are somebody else. Case in point yet again:

Daniel Day Lewis played a character who was born with cerebral palsy In My Left Foot. Yet he doesn't have it.

Marina Zunda played a character who was born a deaf mute In Mute Witness. But she is not.

Linda Hunt played a male character in the Year of Living Dangerously yet she is not.

Domhall Gleeson played an American yet he is Irish in Ex Machina.

@deckard26364: actually you don't understand, when these actors take these roles, it is very esoteric as they and take on the spirit of that character into themselves. That is why the great ones end up having to seek mental health after these roles to get themselves back. Denzel would be off shoot giving Malcolm X speeches that were not in the script when he did Malcolm X. Robert DeNiro,Heath Ledger, Michael B Jordan, Natalie Portman, Lady Gaga, Adrien Brody are just a few who needed psychological help after certain roles. Maybe Joaquin doesn't want to put himself in that place of having the homosexual spirit inside him

@deckard26364: And yet people who actually do have cerebral palsy, who are deaf or who are LGBTQ+ actually exist and can be found to play the parts, whereas precisely zero people on this planet are wizards or Vulcans (excepting Charlie Sheen, who is a verified warlock). Your response is really just entirely irrelevant, but flirts with offensive in the same way it's offensive when bigots yammer the entirely fake and imaginary concern about gay marriage leading to people marrying animals.

Taken to the (il)logical extreme, your argument would posit we should never have gay people playing gay people because that wouldn't be "acting" anymore. Nonsense...and an evasive deflection from the issue.

@esqueejy: I see...so marginalize minorities and make sure they only play roles they identify as. So this theory should apply to Trans Females as it would not be moral to allow them to play roles portraying biological females to insure that biological female actors are not sidelined.

@deckard26364: I watch enough right wing media to see what they're feeding you guys to understand that one of the tricks they try to train you to use is trying to "gotcha" everyone deemed "woke" with some failed attempt to play "turnabout" and "use it against them," but that was a fail. Big. Wet. Sloppy. Fail.

What I'm saying: When a character is a member of a marginalized group, it should behoove the people producing the product to have a member of that marginalized group playing that part.

What you irrationally tried to claim I'm saying: Members of marginalized groups should only be allowed to play characters that are members of their marginalized group.

NOPE. There is no way to logically arrive at the conclusion that I was saying members of marginalized groups should only get acting roles as members of their marginalized groups. Suggesting that someone should receive some priority for casting as representative of their group is not in any way the same as limiting them to ONLY those roles. There's just no logic that gets you from my point A to your point B there.

Enjoy your fail.

@deckard26364: So, you support diversity efforts but have such poor reading comprehension that you read things into what someone writes that aren't there just to try to manufacture a "gotcha"?

At least the anti-woke crowd has the excuse of being incapable of intellectually defending themselves from the abusive cultural resentment propaganda and training they're fed.

@esqueejy: this is so incredibly stupid… Have you asked any gay actors if they would like to be excluded from all straight roles in Hollywood? We should also tell those evil British people to stop stealing our American acting jobs too!

@Vaildez: "Have you asked any gay actors if they would like to be excluded from all straight roles in Hollywood?"

Why would I? That's not on the table, nobody is proposing that, the idea is entirely irrelevant, isn't what's happening in any way and is a failed attempt at reductio ad absurdum.

@sneakywolfny: Poe's Law makes it impossible to discern whether you're being sarcastic or are engaged in the usual self-parody self-awareness fail we regularly see from the usual suspects who actually think that broken "gotcha" attempts like that are effective "anti-woke" trolling.

There is no way Warner brother didn't pay Phoenix a LOT of money to not make this movie. Just the fact he was making it while Joker 2 comes out is enough. NC-17 gay movie...honestly it sounds like a bet gone too far.

He saved them from bigger losses. Whatever losses they incur because of this will be less than they would have been after marketing and distribution. This has too much going against it. An NC-17 rating is a death sentence on its own. No big theater chain will play an NC-17 film. Add a sexually explicit gay love story and it’s completely doomed. Even gay people don’t show up for gay movies. Billy Eichner blamed straight people for not seeing his “Bros” movie, but it didn’t even get close to making its budget back, and there are certainly enough gay people out there to where it should have been able to recoup $22 million. This also would have hurt Joaquin’s career the way Jake Gyllenhaal’s career took a beating for a long time. This would be even worse, considering how much more explicit this sounds. The truth is, no matter how many people say they support gay people and gay projects, very few actually support it with anything more than words.

@stickemup: Huh? Gyllenhaal was top-billed in Jarhead, Zodiac, Rendition, Brothers, Prince of Persia, Love and Other Drugs, and Source Code in the six years that followed. He didn't go anywhere, he went the serious actor route instead of the blockbuster route (Prince of Persia being the only exception and his only miss in that run). He's been top-bill in almost every movie he's been in since 2005 and hardly ever whiffs in a role. His career never took a beating nor has he ever been blacklisted, his path has always been his choice and has left an indelible mark on the last 20 years.

@stickemup: I mean you're right. It's not that it's a "gay" movie, but aiming for NC-17 is brave, even for heterosexual movies. Maybe they play better in Europe, but certainly not in the US. Joaquin was apparently involved with the script so he must have known what he was getting into, but maybe he got cold feet realizing how explicit it was going to be. Can't blame him totally, but he shouldn't have gotten involved if that was the director's intention from the beginning.

Honestly I don't blame him. Just look what happened to Jake Gyllenhall after broke back mountain. Prior to that movie he was actually trending towards super star status. After that role, his opportunities dwindled. The world says they accept lgbtq and even the media constantly pushes it in pur face, but in reality many communities don't accept it. Since society measures success in money, they see a decline in money as lack of interest in the actor or film. Is it surprising that there aren't that many LGBT oriented films even in 2024.

I've read and heard in interviews with actors and crew that have worked with Haynes that he can be difficult to work with and more often than not, a prima donna on the set.

Considering this was going to be NC-17 with graphic scenes, I can see why he pulled out. I respect his intentions initially, but he probably would have to do some things he just wasn’t comfortable with.
