John Carmack, we hardly knew ye. Actually, we know a lot about you which is why we're so crushed by your departure. Secretly, we've been hoping you would eventually reignite first-person shooters for us. In case you missed the memo, John Carmack has officially left the building. id Software's building, that is. In an official statement, id studio director Tom Willit explained,"John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects."
Information has been elusive. On his Twitter, Carmack stated:
I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.

Fans of Carmack needn't despair too much, though. The esteemed programmer is likely to still make an appearance at the next Quakecon even if id Software opts against having him return as a speaker.
If they don't want me to talk on stage at Quakecon next year, we'll just have to fill up the lobby like the old days. :-)

Regardless of what the internal situation may be or what the future may hold, we wish you luck in your future ventures, sir.
