John Carpenter says he'd love to make a Dead Space movie

Renowned horror director says Dead Space is "ready made" for a film adaptation.

Renowned horror director John Carpenter--who brought moviegoers The Thing, Escape of New York, and Halloween--has said he would like to adapt Dead Space to the silver screen.

No Caption Provided

Speaking in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine, Carpenter said the isolated setting of the original Dead Space's USG Ishimura would make a natural fit for a film.

"I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut down spaceship, and they have to start it up and something's on board. It's just great stuff," said Carpenter.

"I would love to make Dead Space, I'll tell you that right now," adding that the game "is ready-made" for a film adaptation.

Dead Space 3 was released in February, though publisher EA has said the third game in the series failed to meet its sales expectations.

The 65-year-old director also admitted that he also "stupidly" purchased a copy of the disappointing Aliens: Colonial Marines earlier in the year.

Dead Space is already a movie. But Dead Space the game, obviously better. So much better. But Dead Space: The game: The Movie will be about as bad as the original Dead Space movie, starring Bryan Cranston, guaranteed.

I think that he might do something interesting with it.

I have started a petition to see where it goes for the part of Isaac, considering that role will be in the movie. I thought that the person who would fit that part most is Josh Stewart. He starred horror movies; The Collector and The Collection, among other things. If you agree or just wanna check it out, then copy and paste this link. https://www.change.org/petitions/josh-stewart-be-cast-as-isaac-clarke-in-dead-space-film

I will greatly appreciate any help with this. Thank you for your time. Can't wait for the movie. Love Dead Space : )

I can't believe i've never thought of this, but he would be the absolute perfect director for this considering he did the movie the thing which served as somewhat of an inspiration for the creation of the necromorphs.

If only the evil EA wasn't owner of this series, then maybe a change would exist for John to get his wish. But EA is the most evil videogame publisher on Earth. They would sneer at such a project, thinking only the current biggest names are worthy to kiss their feet.

The film would have to be set as a point in time as the first red marker was created. That way things couldn't be too screwed up should the directors prove incompetent.

I'm a big fan of scifi horror films and games, but wasn't the original Dead Space already influenced by films like The Thing and Alien/Aliens? I mean, it would be a bit redundant to make a Dead Space film now, wouldn't it? Besides videogame film adaptations have always gone wrong somehow... Though I'd be very pleasantly surprised if someone pulled it off in a respectful and awesome way...

@MJV1989 No, because almost everything takes something off another, so that would mean that by how you feel, indicating by what you just said, everything is redundant. Then again, I know exactly what you mean, but no, it's not true.

Make. This. Happen.

The first game is still a tense experience. Add that with a little character development of Isaac, like 2, and this could be a successful and enjoyable film tie in.

Only if we get "The Thing / Christine / Escape Form New York" Carpenter. If we get "The Ward /Ghost Of Mars / Body Bags " Carpenter, then forget it. Maybe he can reunite with Kurt Russell as well.

@CptRexKramer I don't know. Even his bad movies are very watchable imo.

I'd rather watch a really crappy Carpenter flick than most of the junk hollywood spits out these days (with less than a handful of exceptions).

Now that is awesome to hear. Unlike Wolfenstein and Hendrix....Carpenter and Dead Space actually belong together.

Dead Space 1 would work if they cut out the crazy boss fight planet side and keep everything on the ship.

Dead space 2 and 3 would require Pacific Rim budgets and not really be horror.

I partly agree Mr. Carpenter but the last THING we need is yet another space horror movie. American culture is full of them and just a few of them are really that good.

@DarkSaber2k @JachAnen @NTM23 @franzito Pandorum doesn't even count, Michael Bay and all of his movies do not exist. Or was that Paul WS Anderson? Same difference.

the thing happened 30 years ago. Carpenter has not directed anything worthy in the last 20 years. anyway, just as when George Romero was announced as the director for the resident evil movie, it's probably just a publicity stunt to promote the movie.

this could be the spiritual successor to the Thing. I would like to see what he can do with this, even though i don't have very high hopes for this.

I look forward to it, but I don't know does anyone remember Pandorum(2009) - besides the storyline, it was very much like Dead Space to me.

@Margo_pl I can see where you're getting at, although in my opinion the Dead Space movie should have a lot less characters and the camera should stick with Isaac all the time. Even though I suppose it wasn't true survival horror, Dead Space still did a very good job creating a sense of isolation and despair in a constantly threatening environment. I guess that's one of the most important things to get across. I mean, Doom 3 was claustrophobic and your were alone most of the time, but in the movie you've got this whole squad of soldiers working together and scientists running around. It messes up the atmosphere. Sadly Hollywood does love its cliches.

@loafofgame @Margo_pl Um. Dead Space only had 6 characters. 5 of them died or were already dead.

@Grenadeh @loafofgame @Margo_pl Yeah, I'm sorry, I didn't state the context of my first statement. I meant the Dead Space movie should have less characters than the average sci-fi action movie, which almost always contains several characters who are killed one by one by an unknown alien force that is gradually made more visible. Dead Space's single protagonist and view point don't fit that mold and I think the film makers will try to correct that by adding more characters and view points (because that's what the archetype dictates), which would ruin the actual Dead Space atmosphere. In my opinion.

John Carpenter is DEFINTELY the perfect director for a Dead Space movie, now I understand that there could be a chance it could be a failure...But that's what they said when The Thing came out.
