Kick-Ass Comic Book Reboot Makes Major Changes To Vigilante Hero

Goodbye, Dave Lizewski. Hello, Patience Lee.

Four years after the last Kick-Ass comic ended--the third in the series--the unlikely superhero is returning in a new adventure. Things are very different this time around, though. The character of Dave Lizewski, who has been under the Kick-Ass hood for every comic book and two movies, is being retired.

Instead, a black military veteran named Patience Lee will suit up in the green and yellow costume, prepared to deliver vigilante justice. Not only is Patience a trained fighter, unlike Dave, she's also a mother of two, Entertainment Weekly reports. "I don't think I've ever created a better [character]," Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar tells EW. "I love mom heroes. I did it in Empress and I’ve done it again here."

It's not just a new hero changing things up in the next iteration of Kick-Ass. The series will also no longer be set in New York City. "I wanted to shake up the setting a little and shifted the whole thing to New Mexico," Millar says. The mindset of the character will also be very different.

Dave started his career as Kick-Ass in high school and slowly grew into becoming everything a superhero could be. Patience, on the other hand, comes home from her time in the military "to find her life in a completely different setting from the way it was when she went to Afghanistan so the actual dynamic of the book is really different," Millar explains. "But at the same time the flavor is identical."

One major way the new Kick-Ass will be the same as the comics that came before is in the art. John Romita Jr. will return to the series, drawing for Millar once again. The two are working together on the title under the Image Comics banner. Previously, Kick-Ass was published by Marvel's Icon imprint.

News of a new Kick-Ass comic comes on the feels of Millar selling his company Millarworld to Netflix in August. The first issue of the new Kick-Ass will be released on February 14, 2018.

That just seems like such a strange change up. Its not even what Kick-Ass was all about anymore. It shouldn't even bear the same name, it should be called something completely different just taking place in the same universe with some kind of weird relation to Dave. This just isn't Kick-Ass.

Being they obviously were looking to make a new character with no real relation to the original Kick-Ass other than being a vigilante in the same universe wouldn't it have made more since to just make a spin-off title called "Patience"? Heck its even got a bit of a catchy ring to it and they could completely flesh out the character without feeling any need to tether her to Kick-Ass in regards to costume, fighting style, missions, etc.

I don't know it just feels like if Luke Cage had been created these days the creators would have shoe-horned him into the new Green Arrow rather than letting him just be his own person, Luke Cage.

Not a reboot. A reboot would be starting over. This is following the story of someone inspired to take up the persona from what I've read. That's a revival... or continuation.

I enjoyed the Millar/Romita combo on Enemy of the State. May give this a shot if it doesn't come off as pandering.

Here's to hoping this is actually a satire of reboots.

Is this a sequel, or a reboot?

Anyway, I'm not really sold on the new character idea. The whole point of Dave was that he was the generic everyman. No powers, no special training, no fortune invested into a super suit, and not even a real desire to fight crime. Just a regular guy wanting to live out the superhero fantasy.

Meanwhile, "coming back from the war and using your skills to clean up the city" has been done a million times already. It's not an inherently bad story concept, but it's not fresh and attention grabbing either. I feel like if this launched without the Kick-Ass title it would barely register on anyone's radar.

Turn Iron Man into a black girl, turn Kick-Ass into a black girl, turn Valkyrie into a black girl, turn Nick Fury into a black guy, turn the Hulk into an asian guy....

This diversity simply for the sake of diversity bullshit is just ridiculous in the comics world now.

Here's a bright idea...how about come up with some new fucking characters. These are fictional worlds populated by superpowered beings. The possibilities for new characters are virtually endless. Have a little creativity.

@frank_castle: He kinda did come up with a new character. And I thought the whole point of Kick-Ass was that there aren't a bunch of actual super powered beings populating the world. This seems like the original creator being creative and changing up his comic.

@frank_castle: Lol you are mad because super heroes are being re-written as black characters? Is it really that big of a deal. Its just a fad bruh black people are in style that's all it is don't worry. Hip hop culture is hot and heavily influential, rest assured life in general has not changed. You will live. What if they did write new characters and they were all black would you be any less angry?

@frank_castle: I'm no fan of lazy race re-writes, but i wonder if you have an issue with new sidekicks/proteges in general, which many of these new diverse versions of heroes are. The original characters haven't been re-written or replaced. Cho for example was his own character long before he became a new Hulk. Iron Heart has not replaced Iron Man, but is simply Stark's protege and is her own character much like War Machine and Rescue.

Other than skin color, I don't see how many of them are any different from the likes of Bucky Barnes or the many Robins that came before; who have gone on to take the mantles of their respective heroes themselves.

The media in general does their job in riling up anger by not accurately describing what is actually happening with these new diverse characters. They come out with articles like 'NEW BLACK IRONMAN!' when the reality is more like what I wrote just before this.

@frank_castle: yeah i would have went with the story the original Kick Ass quit being a hero cus he felt he wasn't making a big enough difference or something but someone else was inspired to do it and bought a green and yellow suit but the pattern on it is way different with a totally different mask....then slap a kevlar vest on, shin guards and elbow/knee pads and still dual weapons like dual tonfas, and dual machete's, dual sai's whatever....dual hook swords would be the best cus of the versatility.....

I hate fake diversity....look at how Green lantern evolved, first it was Alan Scott?? with all that weirdness with the star heart then they introduced Hal Jordan?? or was it John Stewart??? anyways they just went to the next guy and that ended up being the norm for the Green Lantern mythos, Stewart became popular cus of the justice league cartoons lolz and now they have Guy Gardner, Kyle Reynor, Baz and I forget the girl's name....not to mention the alien Lanterns from across the universe....

eh that's DC though....marvel comics, fake diversity to pander to the SJW's since the 2010's

DC Comics, making things kinda eh then very much awesome since 2011 Dark Knight Metals, need i say more? good gods Batman Who Laughs....the drowned, Death Machine etc crazy stuff man, it's great....

@MJ12-Conspiracy: Thats what the SJW's are fighting for??? Black super heroes?? I pitty anyone who takes issue with color. It should never make a difference no matter the case. It has got to be the dumbest shit to take the time and energy to be upset about. Who makes these rules that a fictional character should always have the same skin color when the story is told.

@craigtl: The "SJW" want diversity for the sake of it (and go on a tantrum if people don't do it fast enough), cry "cultural appropriation" even when it's not (people complained Mario was wearing a Sombrero, I think that's one of the Mexican hats), and if they are at the helm of a company, sink it into the ground with forced diversity (BioWare for example).

They also seem to have a "Non whites can't be racist" attitude in more extreme cases. I more or less have the same thought process as this bunch (in that diversity can be good), but their toxicity is horrible.

See Manveer Heir as a prime example. There's a collection of tweets by him on Imgur. Personally, I call them SAS. Real SJWs are quite good in my book.

@kaminobenimizu: I'm well aware of all of that but I also think there are people on the opposite end that just like to cry out about sjw when something like this new reinvention of kick ass happens. My point is simply this. When we stop making issues out of skin color we can start coming together on actual issues. Complaining about things like this is just foolish. It has no affect on anyone's life. It's entertainment you either get into it or just move on. I'm starting to not be able to tell the difference between people who are against the overzealous sjw agenda and people who are just plain prejudice. It gives the latter something to hide behind so they can safely push their wrongful agenda.

@craigtl: To tell the difference between the SAS haters and the real hateful groups (or borderline hateful, in that they are not hateful, but clearly lean toward the same tendencies such as slightly unfair treatment even if there's actually no ill intention, minus violence, unlike hateful groups that do encourage violence and downright unfair treatment), just speak to them.

SAS haters will more times than not, explain themselves at some point, while those that might be biased, or downright hateful, will quickly use "libtard", "cuck", and other ridiculous things to "shield" themselves, without even knowing your ideology.

People should actually pay attention to SAS as they somewhat prove the haters right (which might make a bunch join their ranks even if they are not hateful themselves). The more radical SAS are okay with non white racists and other ridiculous things (which many, including white hateful groups are against). Both groups are two sides of the same coin. They do have some points somewhere (in that even a broken clock can be right twice a day), but their ideals are twisted and have very bad outcomes if they ever come to fruition.

One will call you a "Nazi", the other, a "Sellout", if you don't have the same ideas as them.

As for "When we stop making issues with skin color", it'll happen when pigs will fly, hens and roosters will have teeth, and God and Lucifer will do a dabbing contest. Sorry to sound THAT negative (I know I sound sarcastic, but I am not).

Throughout history, whack heads cared too much about left handed vs right handed, hair color, and other ridiculously trivial things, for the world's own good. Skin color is a theme that remains strong in the hearts of haters, but once, if ever, this trend dies, another ridiculous one will pop up. Many just can't live without hating on something (including those that are supposed to be against hate, ironically hate haters*), and many like minded individuals will always group together.

*:I take a more neutral approach in that I try to see if they are misguided souls (there's a ton of them, alas), or are fully aware of what they say, before making a full judgment. Ironically, there are some ex haters that complain about haters, while out of many people, they should be the first ones to try to get others out of such groups instead of branding them as haters and xenophobes (since previously, they were like this as well). If they got out, why not try to make others get out as well, instead of bashing them at their turn?

Anyway, sorry for the negative wall of text. In short, just speak with them, maybe you'll manage to drag someone out of a wrong path, or make others speak more clearly.

My older brother chatted with someone that used terms such as "Sand ni**er", and made that person backtrack on those thoughts.

While I made someone speak more clearly, as that person seemed to be anti muslim. That person was actually speaking about the radical ones (not the terrorists, but still toxic). Said person ended up saying muslims were okay (as long as they are not toxic, obviously).

In both of these cases, many will just ignore them, moderate them, or insult them, without trying to speak to them and actually know how they really think. Most will say "Don't waste your time", but technically, both my older brother and I did just that, and it turned out positive.

It's always worth a shot since it's free, and you'll make the hateful groups smaller, even if by one person, is still a critical hit in their ranks.

Err... got off topic again, aww man...
