Killing Floor 2 Launching New Item Marketplace, But Only for Cosmetics

Dress yourself up before you get covered in blood.

Killing Floor 2 is adding a new in-game store and item system, but everything obtained through either of these will be limited to cosmetic changes only.

No Caption Provided

The Trading Floor, as it's called, will sell new weapon skins, outfits, and outfit skins. These will be sold for real money, while many (but not all) items will also be handed out for free through an in-game drop system that sounds reminiscent of Team Fortress 2's.

The TF2 comparisons hold true for other aspects of this system as well. You'll be able to earn supply crates and blueprints that can be unlocked to earn new skin variants and weapon skins, respectively, with the purchase of a key. There are different levels of rarity possible, with the highest tier only being available through crates and blueprints. Weapons get an additional layer of rarity in the form of wear; they'll range from mint to battle-scarred, not unlike the TF2 weapons released as part of the Gun Mettle update.

Tripwire is insistent that all of this is purely cosmetic; you won't be buying improved versions of existing weapons or anything of the sort. That approach is part of the reason Payday 2 has recently drawn the ire of its players.

As with items in some other Steam games (like--you guessed it--TF2), most of these items can be traded with other people or sold on the marketplace. You're also free to ignore all of this, though if you don't care about using the items, you'd be passing up free money by not at least selling the stuff you earn for free by playing.

In an FAQ, Tripwire says it has no plans to convert Killing Floor 2 into a free-to-play game or to discontinue support for mods. It adds that it plans to continue offering free content "for years just as we did for Killing Floor 1." That includes adding new classes, maps, and enemies.

Money generated from these items will be split with the content creators (in the case of items that are designed by community members) and go "towards creating new (free) content, events and whatever else we can dream up for you."

As for the fact that this addition is coming while the game is still in early access, Tripwire says, "We view the Trading Floor as a feature that needs iteration just like the rest of the features in the game. Early Access is the perfect place to iterate on the Trading Floor feature with the community."

Some more potentially controversial additions could come in the future, as Tripwire says it'll listen to fan feedback about whether to offer stat or experience boosts. It also reveals there's the potential for new weapons to be added "with new gameplay," but that these will be shared with all players on a server, meaning you'll always have access to the same weapons as anyone you're playing with.

As long as there's no stat boosting skins then all is good.

So first they assure people it's only cosmetic stuff.

At the end they close off by saying that they ARE looking into XP boosts and exclusive weapons.

uuuuuuuuuuuh, I'm lost.

This is why I am glad I never buy into these online only games, there is always a chance that the devs will mess it up.

Fun fact: "With 755,860 copies sold at $29.99(excluding deluxe versions) your looking at $22,668,241.40." So I don`t know how much more money they need to finish the game.

I saw this and cried. I miss the days of time splitters where if you play enough you can unlock all 120 characters and weapons, no pay wall or anything. Finish the game, don't add lame stuff like this. Or you know, give this content to the people that already bought your fucking game.

Well, that's one way to make people hate your game.

Tip top kek. Grabbing the popcorn and prepping my F5 button while I watch the Steam review scores tank.

@krazyorange: This "grab the popcorn" crap has gotten so tired, every comment has few of them posted by people who think they are so clever and funny.

I regret buying into Early Access then. Granted with the way they supported Killing Floor 1 after launch (and the way they priced it if I recall), I don't think it's an entirely gross thing to do if they do the same with Killing Floor 2.

Microtransactions in an unfinished 30 dollar game.

I'm so done.

@Tiwill44: It's how the last one worked. They sold bunches of skins for the characters and weapons. Including some community made ones and split the profits. This stuff keeps the lights on and lets them add free stuff to game over time.

Not everybody likes Killing Floor, but I've always got the impression the fans felt like they had a good relationship with the devs.

@Mogan: Killing Floor 1 was a finished game, though. And it didn't have microtransactions, it had DLC. This time they're doing like TF2, except TF2 is a free-to-play game, and this costs $30.

@Tiwill44: DLC that cost a very small amount of money. Almost, micro, if you will. This is just an in game marketplace instead of being part of the Steam store page.

As far as the game being done ... meh. I mean, either the game was either already worth your money, or you knowingly took a risk hoping it eventually would be. If the micro-transactions are bad, don't buy them. Passing judgement and running away at the first sign of something you might not like isn't useful. It doesn't cost you anything to see how this plays out so you can make an informed decision about it.

@Mogan:It's the principle. They're not even close to being done making the game (more maps, characters and weapons), yet here they are, making this microtransaction system for a quick buck.

The game is good, but desperately needs more content. I mean, it's not even out of Early Access and it's already dead (only about 1200 people play it simultaneously). They chose to prioritize a microtransaction update while we've been waiting forever for the content we were promised. It's just shameful.

This is the last time I buy an Early Access game, since clearly devs lie more than they code. And then they wonder why people pirate...
