Kinect tech specs reveal 2-player limit? - Retail Radar

British retailer posts reputedly detailed breakdown of motion-sensing system's features--which say it permits only a pair of "active players" at one time.

The world got its first glimpse at Kinect at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, when it was unveiled to the world as Project Natal. Microsoft used a slickly produced video to show how the motion-sensing device could be used by an almost frighteningly perfect family, all four of whom laughed and smiled as they played a series of games.

Purportedly leaked tech specs say only two
Purportedly leaked tech specs say only two "active players" can play Kinect at once.

Now, though, it appears that the number of people able to play a Kinect game may be limited to two. UK-based retailer Play.com has posted a product page that lists the technical specifications (see below) for Kinect in unprecedented detail.

The product listing says that the controller-less system "tracks up to 6 people, including 2 active players" (emphasis added). It is unclear if the tech spec's careful phrasing means that up to six people could simultaneously play a simple passive title--a trivia game like that shown in the 2009 Natal introduction video--or that it can just recognize six people at once. By comparison, four people can play Nintendo's Wii and Sony's upcoming PlayStation Move, but all will require controllers.

Since Microsoft did not hand out a similar document at E3 2010 earlier this month, it is impossible to verify the specs on Play.com as 100 percent authentic. As of press time, Microsoft had not responded to requests for verification of the apparently leaked tech specs.

However, Play.com's disclaimer says "this information is based on specifications supplied by manufacturers," indicating it is likely genuine. Backing that up is the tech specs' wording, which describes features such as Kinect's "skeletal tracking system" using the exact phrasing in Microsoft press materials.

Within one room perhaps but online? perhaps more...maybe up to 16 players. But they'd have to test for lag @zzamaro Actually there is a game in the bundle pack for the Xbox Kinect. I t was revealed in the unpacking video. So they both have the same price point and offer up a similar experience out of the box. One game and 2 players.

I think this limitation is understandable. Even if it isn't a technical one, it's one that would make sense for pratical purposes. Having four people lined up in a living room, while still maintaining a good view of the tv would be hard. Still, weren't there demos of Dance Central in which one player was up front and there were two in the back? I'm pretty sure the other two did not influence in the game per se, but in specific moments, such as in that "free style dancing", the camera would capture all three. Anyway, until Microsoft confirms any of this, it's all speculation.

Venom341 i'm only giving information. yes they are haveing a bundle for the playstion move. and yes it comes with a game. but still notice, the bundle only comes with the motion controller, the eye toy and a game. for a $100. you still end up paying 39.99 for the navigation controller. and you're still left playing by yourself... the only thing i'm trying to say is the price point should be mute as Micro$oft and $ony are both putting out pricey gadgets. @zzamaro add the price of $80 for 2 navigation controllers. plz

I think it's funny how everyone messes around with numbers to show how something can be more expensive. I can play this game, I personally only need one move controller and a navigation controller, since I already have the PSEye I am only going to spend $80 for the Move experience. To me Kinect is just a glorified EyeToy.

looks like this will stop 4 player matches on fifa/pes. i'll chance it and say multiplayer fifa/pes matches will likely be only possible with 2 per console. I ain't fussed with only 2 active players as some of us don't have our mates round every waking moment. ps move is relatively quieter compared to the who-ha over kinect and it may pull the rug from under microsoft. if you watch the promo video from 2009 you can see it is 2 standing playing the football and 4 sitting playing the quiz game. i, personally, reckon that they are think of this as an add-on and not as the "future of gaming".if there will be any "proper" games; they may not be about until after the first year of natal. we all saw the star wars tie-in at e3, with the darth vader cameo and waving lightsabers. it looks no more than a r/d demo. if that is anything like the finished article "on-rail swordplay" then it ain't worth getting apart from the lure of playing with lightsabers. The tech itself is something that did get my attention along with milo and a couple of games shown in the 2009 promo. if the games shown at e3 2010 are the launch titles then i'll wait and hold onto my 100 squids. even with this suspect handling of the tech that could be so much more than a party piece. last year i felt natal was handled properly - getting everyone to sit up and take notice but, with the gimmicky stuff this year was the direction they want to go - let them, no skin off my nose. it just looks like they are treading grounds that have been stepped on before. if i ain't mistaken there is gears 3, medal of honour and some other interesting looking titles for xbox360 owners. so if the launch of "kinect" is missed out on it is not a big deal. look at games such as red steel, no more heroes and dead space extraction for attempts of "games that use the tech available" and that is on the wii. these had to be waited for, they were not available at release of the wii. the demos of sourcery and tiger woods at e3 showed promise for ps move but the one i really wanted to see was the tech's use with killzone 3. hope ain't lost yet, just may need to wait it out a bit.

@Lethale123 I thought Wiimote still cost an arm and a leg...comparing the three products on one website that shalt remain nameless... Wiimote + Nunchuck + Motionplus £52.25 PS Move starter pack (ps eye, ps move + game) + Navigation Controller £85 Kinect £130 So you have one company charging £52 for controllers that have been out for nearly 4 years. The PS3 charging £85 for a brand new product with game and a peripheral that can be used instantly with games such as burnout paradise etc etc and Microsoft jumping the gun at charging £70 more than its rivals, without any games whatsoever. Value for money?

@Lethale123 Did you even look at the bundle they released? $100 for the Playstation Eye, Move controller, and a copy of Sports Champions I believe. I think it's only $40 more for the navigation controller. And your reasoning is basically saying that if you want double the people, pay double the cash. That doesn't make much sense if you ask me.

Pricing has always been steep with new peripherals. $150 sounds great considering the alternative. Just to add. Playstation Move's "set", which is the motion controller and navigation controller will cost around $80 per person plus another $40 for the eyetoy if you don't already have them. 2players-$160 4players= $320. just think about whose robbing who in this situation.

To avoid any backlash from....well anyone. I own a Wii and a sexy PS3, X-box has never interested until i see the adverts for Natal late last year. I got excited to say the least. As other posters have said: to be able to play a game without controllers is the next step. COD8 perhaps in your own living room. FIFA12 with your friends (or friend if the story above is true). Amazing, were a long way off holograms in the centre of our rooms so in the mean this is the way to go. Next up for the controller free gaming world is sensor pads on the body. Nothing extreme just a body suit that vibrates in the areas your were hit/shot/tackled/stabbed/ran over etc etc...he he he

@chrispicard I would deffo choose the matrix style. The day that I can "physically" be in a zombie apocalypse with a minigun is a most happy day. It's funny though isn't it, how we are both gamers and yet I love motion control whereas you don't. I guess it is just the Marmite argument all over again lol;.

@kavadias1981 Okay i'll let you have that it's a step forward. I guess what i mean is its a step forward in the wrong direction. There are 2 paths gaming can take... ONE is a STAR TREK style holographic projection room, a virtual world of your choosing but you're still limited by your own physical capacities, you still get tired etc. TWO is to "jack-in" MATRIX style to a virtual world where you can be/do anything you can imagine and never get tired as you're using thought alone to control who/what you choose to be. I'd like to see gaming end up like option TWO. How bout you guys?

Microsoft have said a few times it can read upto 2 full player skeletons & keep its eye on upto 6. And personally im not a "Casual" gamer, im more hardcore than anything else but im interested in Kinect, not only from a gaming standard but a remote-free voice controlled media functionality standard. Alot of the games demo'd so far look casual/party, which is fine, doesnt tickle my interest, But the gym work out one looks good and i know alot of people that will be interested in Dance Central, and the Wii isnt even comparable to anything that Kinect does, so I don't know why people keep bringing it up as a viable alternative just because it has more games, its like telling people to buy a Game Boy rather than a Nintendo 3DS because it has more games.

I understand why the Hardcore Gaming community are not going to go for this. But this is the future, our kids are going to grow up thinking that a controller is lame. Back to the future 2, in the cafe anyone!?! I am going to get this and kinectimals for my 3 year old daughter. When I switch it off I want to ask me "will I dream?"

@petemig I predicted that a long time ago. I think it's a little late to get in on the casual market. There's no way the casual gamers that bought a Wii are gonna go out and buy a 360 just for the Kinect. Everybody wants to come out with the next big innovation....well how about this for innovation...make games the way they used to be made!

Makes sense. It can track 2 active players, for instance if both in a racing game for example, but can see 6, for use in games like trivia, so if one happens to hit the buzzer, that person becomes the active player, along with one other, and the rest become passive players, that are still somewhat sensed.

why would you want 4 players with motion controls theres not enough room, another person can hit with the remote the split screen would be confusing.imagine playing a Wii or move sports game with four people and the horizonal split screen. Motion controls were never ment for 4 players in the same room the hardware might mess up if you play with 4 players to.And Natal has 2 hard core action games fable 3 and the star wars. every other game is FAILLLLL

Kinect would be better if it had: 1. USB support for PC and programs that would work with the depth sensing on PC 2. A built in processor/HDD/graphics card so you don't need a 360 to use it, thus making it easier to move to a friends house or into a different room 3. GOOD FRIGGIN GAMES Reason 3 is most important, and I have a feeling they aren't releasing it as a separate gaming system because it will have as big of a library as the eye toy I'm guessing...

Ok, here's the thing. The Kinect tech is cool...but not for video games. I can imagine having a house set up with this tech for everything including security. If the Kinect can match you with you're Avatar, wouldn't it make more sense to use that as a way of entering your home? The welcome mat outside the door would have a weight sensor, the camera scans your body and facial features and says "Welcome home, (Name Here)". Using this tech in gaming might just be a waste.

You only need 1 player for hardcore games. If you want 4 players go play a wii party game. 2 players is the norm for most co-op games anyway. The real problem will be that Kinect will probably have problems finding the 2 active players if there are 2 or more passive players around them.

I would think only the car racing game are effected by this. What games on the Wii do you have 4 Active people playing, Kart, Bash. Very little. Most you take turns stepping up. Like the Sports games. 2 are not actively bowling, Golfing, Baseball on wii sports. Just have to forget about 6 men Crew races anytime soon. That being said. No, not buying any of these. Will accept as a gift.
