Kingdom Come And Why First Impressions Matter

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Peter, Jean-Luc, and Rob discuss why they came around on Kingdom Come despite its many bugs.

At first glance, Kingdom Come: Deliverance bears more than a passing resemblance to other medieval RPGs, particularly the Elder Scrolls series. Both share a first-person viewpoint and take place in a sprawling, European-inspired world inhabited by an extensive cast of characters going about their daily lives. Beyond those superficial similarities, however, Kingdom Come is an entirely different experience, carving out its own identity by removing fantasy elements entirely in favor of a historically accurate setting and gameplay.

Where most other medieval RPGs populate their worlds with magic and dragons, Kingdom Come eschews all of the fantasy trappings typically associated with the genre for a story that's firmly rooted in history. The game takes place in 15th century Bohemia, with players assuming the role of a lowly blacksmith's son as the country becomes embroiled in a brutal civil war. This emphasis on realism extends into the gameplay systems; combat has a steep learning curve, and you must learn how to bandage up wounds to keep from bleeding out if you happen to get struck by an arrow.

Now Playing: Why First Impressions Matter - Kingdom Come Deliverance

Unfortunately, as is often the case with such ambitious titles, Kingdom Come is also burdened by its share of bugs, which will undoubtedly turn some players away. In the video above, GameSpot's Peter Brown, Jean-Luc Seipke, and Rob Handlery discuss their experience with the title, particularly their initial impressions and how, despite its many technical issues, they eventually came around on the game after spending more time with it.

Kingdom Come is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Critic Brett Todd called it "a rewarding, one-of-a-kind game" in GameSpot's Kingdom Come review. "It's an impressive and unflinching look at the medieval era that transports you inside the compelling story of a real person caught in the middle of a civil war. As such, this is one of those rare, memorable games that stays with you long after you stop playing," he wrote.

If you're interested in seeing more footage from the medieval RPG, you can watch us play through the opening portion of Kingdom Come, giving you a look at how the tutorial unfolds, along with a glimpse at the game's demanding combat system. You can also watch footage of us fleeing from a band of attackers on horseback and learning how to use a sword and bow for the first time.

Besides the bugs...

why am I constantly having to search for a shovel? My Dad is a blacksmith and should have hundreds of shovels, yet I have to search an entire town for one. Later at a farm I’m asked to find another shovel. If you ever lived on farm, there are tools everywhere and usually well organized. Pitiful. It’s suppossed to be real? Please do me a favor.

Now let’s talk load times. You click to talk to a towns person, it loads and loads and loads, and they say “What’s up?”... that’s very frustrating. And it happens all the time.

They say it’s an open world, I beg to differ. It’s a story where you are led by the nose through each boring bit of dialogue, and it’s as open as having choice A or choice B, that’s not an open world. Awful.

Lastly, unless you have a magic potion (how’s that for realism) you can’t save the game until designated saved spots. How very retro but in the worst way. Yuck.

This game is like watching a character in a bad movie and wondering why you’re watching it, except it’s worse, because you are actually playing it and the playability is terrible.

Oh yea that advanced “combat” system... all you have to do it keep poking (RB on Xbox) and you will win. It’s not an advanced combat system in any way, it’s about as nuanced and real as cornflakes. Save your money, this is awful.

The bugs will be fixed, and since it's a PC game at heart, great mods will roll in.

About 9 months from now the game will be perfect.

Im pretty sure I will pick this up...... but it will totally be after a patch that fixes a lot of bugs and hopefully at a discounted price. Some of those bugs are just like wow!!! On another note was that a beer in that guys hand while they were discussing the game in the first part of the video. How did I miss out on the career of playing games as a job.

@shadow6323: That's part of the game's gritty realism. You're supposed to push the door first, which will rotate around a pivot point, easily identifiable by metal hinges on the side, until it's, roughly, at a ninety degree angle perpendicular to the wall it's attached to, so you can then walk through the center of the door frame, were the door used to be, obstruction free. Try it!

This one is definitely on my list. But it's plagued with early release issues. Perhaps in a few months a lot of the bugs and stuff will be dealt with.

Still a bit on the fence with this title. When I first saw it, my initial thought was, "oh Lord, here we go, yet again trying to *reinvent* or *recreate* the medieval days, yet again". If it says anything, I grew up as a kid totally LOVING knights, chivalry, archers, the medieval stuffs, etc... fast forward some THREE DECADES later, and for the most part, I'm pretty much done on most anything medieval unless it is really immersive and/or has some means of diving you into the feeling of the environment, etc. This game SEEMS to have those things... but seriously, think about it, D&D, Ultima, Wizardry, Castle (PC), Adventure (Atari), Venture (Coleco), Elder Scrolls, Everquest, (War In) Middle-Earth offshoots (and online MMORPG), Allods, For Honor, Mount and Blade, Medieval series, Chivalry, Dark/Demon Souls, The Witcher series, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragon's Dogma, Dragon Age, Two Worlds, Darksiders, Stronghold, Age of Conan, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Arcania, Risen, Fable, Warcraft, and SO MANY others especially looking at the 1-million-and-one WoW-clones... (not to mention the MANY cheap cash ins over the years/decades) fairly burnt out on medieval (even Assassin's Creed of sorts lumps in, even THE SIMS had a "The Sims: Medieval"!)... I even have to massively research many of the really (proclaimed) "good" upcoming or newly-released Korean MMOs before I'll even tough them (Black Desert Online, Riders of Icarus, Revelation Online, etc).

The idea/notion of being able to immerse into the idea of medieval times, even in a lowly "son of a blacksmith" role caught my eye, unlike the many other that are like, "create your character that's already a knight, wizard, mage, archer without any backstory or reasoning for even being there, then go out and slaughter everything in your path and pretend to sing the stories of your conquests in true minstrel fashion"... seriously if it was another of those, without much rhyme or reason for why we'd go about plunging ourselves into wash/rinse/repeat/copy-pasta for the upteenth time, I was soooo ready to toss a few expletives in for emphasis, rofl.

But on the whole, this doesn't seem/look THAT bad... but due to so many titles lately being rather disappointing (looking at you Mafia 3, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Just Cause 3, Watch Dogs 2 (kinda-sorta), etc, etc, etc, etc...), will probably wait until it comes down in price before checking it out. :P

@zombietech: If you love medieval times (the real and not the romanticized) you will love this game, period. I love the medieval times and I am very happy this game exists. If you are interested and don't know much about it there is a lot to learn in this game.

It's just far from perfect in other ways. You will run into bugs and will need a beefy system to run it well, and there are rough parts in the game. But if you love or are intrigued by the medieval times and want to know more about it or want to finally see it presented in a more realistic way, you will easily look past all that because compared to anything else we've seen before it does that very well.

Like: If you were to see a house build in a realistic medieval style, would you stop to take a look at it? That question basically answers whether you want this game, or whether it's a peculiar 7 for you.

I'm in the mid stage of the game and it is a definite 7 to me (I am a golden god of archery, who needs swords pfft), but if you're a middle ages fanboy this is a dream game once the performance issues are dealt with.

It's not like it'd make the game better but I wish Prague or an actual city were in the game. Rattay was irrelevant and tiny as hell even back then and it or Sassau are the biggest places. The writing, protagonist and general story are just incredibly bland so the world needs to make up for it.

@spaced92: maybe it is my personal preference but Archery is the worst type of gameplay as it is the least interactive way of playing.

I remember those days when I tried to play as archer in Skyrim because I felt it is the most safe way to play with hit'n'run or hide'n'hit tactics. That's where I learned that archery makes games to feel dull.

I sincerely recommend you to play in the most challenging way, that's where you get a thrill.

I'm sure some day, with the help of machine learning algorithms and the like, developers will be able to procedurally generate compelling quest lines that are completely open ended, however, for the time being, some of the complaints of Beerguy seem unreasonable to me, especially for a game with a main character and a predefined storyline.

I love the nodding reference at the start :D haha

BTW you don't have to do that patrol with the guards that you guys were talking about. You can also walk into a place you don't belong and have an actual guard take over for you since you don't know what you're doing. I never went into town on patrol and all that.

I got the idea that those very linear cases (which I can totally understand you feel are too strict) are there for you to experience what it would have been like to do their job. Almost like an interactive museum tour. Which is not an excuse, it's just one way to do it.

I've never seen a game be so good and so bad at the same time. I would still wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who can run it and has the faintest interest in the medieval times or a refreshing RPG... with a caveat.

For example: The architecture is more authentic than I've seen in any other game. Probably any media for that matter. It's surprising and impressive. The clothing is colorful and not the dreadful brown and grey that movies like to make us think they wore. The way people act and have status feels real at times and the notes are entertaining and very educational. The story is better than I expected. I didn't really expect much of a story at all. The NPC routines are better than we are used to and makes the people feel more alive.

But sometimes it's surprisingly bad. Pathfinding can suck. Your horse can get stuck on fences. I've seen someone on video launch straight up into the sky when the horse bumped into a rock. There is a problem with the collision detection from the character to the floor causing most of these things. It can make stairs feel like boss battles, or doorways impassible.

This game breathes medieval air, it's amazing. And details like this: a miller who I talked to and who was going to take me some place, happened to be carrying a bag in his routine and during the conversation he was still carrying it. (He doesn't always carry that bag in his routine.) He drops the bag and takes me there. Maybe that sounds like an insignificant detail but it's something you normally don't see in a game. Either the bag would disappear in thin air or the bag would be placed in a specific pre-programmed spot, or he would be carrying that bag all the time. It came across as surprisingly natural.

Yet... 5 minutes later I leave the miller's house and see mr. miller standing next to a cart spinning around rather quickly. In fact, he keeps spinning around and seems to be accelerating. At some point the miller is spinning at an estimated 1000 rpm and starts kneeling while spinning, and doing other artistic motions. I'm unable to talk to him because he's now stuck in some kind of figure skating limbo until I get far enough away and then back again.

And many things like that happen. Sometimes without an easy solution. And it's funny half the time but it can also be very frustrating. This game is best appreciated by taking it for what it is. Letting go of all expectations I do really enjoy it. But I can't be sure that you won't run into something game breaking that will set you back to a previous save from 20 minutes ago.

There will be patches incoming and I bet they will fix a lot of this stuff eventually, so if you want to err on the safer side I would wait a little while for some fixes.

@KungfuKitten: The game has many issues, but holistically speaking, it's remarkably compelling. Sure, there are a lot of repetitive tasks, but due to the range and depth of systems available, they manage to remain engaging for far longer than in other similar titles.

I've been playing for 26 hours and have not encountered any serious bug. However, what has bothered me the most, is how animals never react to arrows that just barely missed their heads or landed right next to them. It helps my poaching, but it looks dumb as heck.

A bunch of guys drinking beer and saying things ANYONE could say about this game. There's no credibility, no charima, no informative value, no nothing. And they needed to show the beer, it's clear it was the single most important thing about this video to them. Because "look at us, we're hip, aren't we cool?".

And they call this a profession, and they are payed to do that and people watch it.

I used to log into Gamespot everyday almost a decade ago, then again when Andy, Cam and Seb were here with their awesome videos. Even Kevin, never liked him very much personally but he was eons ahead of these morons.

Now I just come here once per month, maybe. Now it's just guys that play less games and for fewer hours than most of us saying shallow and uninteresting things, things that simply don't add anything, while trying to look hip.

This is the last time I come to Gamespot, for real.

There's NOTHING worth watching or read on Gamespot anymore, you can easily find much, much better content on reddit, YouTube or other, better websites. And also better people, more insightful and more charismatic people.

It's said to see how low a once great website could get, but it is what it is and there's absolutely nothing else for me here, only people I consider annoying, unintelligent and uninteresting making videos or writing features I consider an affront to intelligence.

And I know I am just one, keep earning your money and drinking you're beer while doing mediocre things that add nothing to the world or anyone living on it, not even entertainment.

@wtf_damn: For honor sucked hard. It was rock paper scissors KDC has 6 ways to hit that's much more realistic. No dedicated servers is what killed for honor along with needing to spend 4 years of 8-10hrs a day in order to unlock everything.

@lordbeefjerky: I think hes trying to say that For Honor's combat system was better which is true cause the animations and combat in For Honor were a lot smoother than Kingdom Come Deliverance. The problem For Honor had though was the lack of dedicated servers.

@gamingdevil800: Really? I don’t see him even mentioning the combat system. How in the hell did you get all that out of his strange sentence?!

I do agree For Honors combat system is more smooth. But the combat system in Kingdom Come is meant to be wonky with a steep learning curve. The game makes that very clear from the beginning. You’re not meant to rush into conbat - you’re meant to avoid it like the plague in the beginning. I get why people don’t like this game and all. It’s a very different sort of RPG once you get through the similarities of others. But just like most RPGs, if you invest time in it, it will really open up. This one just takes awhile longer than the most.

Wow they've actually mentioned some gameplay and design issues with the game - that you can become OP with the stealing, that Henry sometimes seems pre-written etc. All valid points. Most reviewers just get too hung up on the technical problems.

Technical issues are real but with these fan-driven, passion-driven projects we usually only have two choices: 1) game releases glitchy and the devs iron it out over time; or 2) there is no game. I'm so glad this game exists. Birth pangs are fine, they can be waited out, main thing is this beautiful baby has been born at all.

@KarlosBog: If you're successful at sneaking, lock picking, and pick pocketing and you're unable to become overpowered by virtue of the stolen goods themselves or their pawning, then you're playing a game that missed the point of professional thieving.

EDIT: Also, Henry is prewritten, literally.

Exactly, medieval realism at its finest. If you're skilled enough to steal anything you want/need, then you've essentially become "OP" by society's standards.

Not the typical magic medieval rpg huh? Might have to give it a shot.

Not that there is anything wrong with the traditional Dungeons and Dragons/Lord of the rings type approach to the genre in the gaming medium but I for some reason personally find it hard to get involved in all these worlds with their own unique magic, sorcery, mythos, etc...

It also seems like they all draw heavily upon a similar source material (Tolkien?). Ogre, elves, mages, sorceresses, etc...

-That's rich, Ninja. Considering you pretty much live in a fantasy of your own.-

Surprisingly the only medieval type book/show/game I have found myself really captivated by was the old 1998 (I think.) Berserk anime. Even though it had similar elements to some of the aforementioned literature for some reason the main storyline/rivalry kept me thirsty for more.

@videogameninja: It's really good some bugs just make the game funny and it's a good time. I haven't had any game breaking ones other than having to redo a quest because something didn't trigger. It'll be fixed in time either through them or mods. A game of thrones total conversion mod is already in the works so that should be good when it comes out.
