Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning Will Get New Life And Funny New Name

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is launching in August, according to an Xbox.com product page.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the 2012 RPG from controversial former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's ill-fated development studio 38 Studios and publisher EA, is making a comeback of sorts, and it has a brilliant new name.

New rights-owner THQ Nordic is re-releasing the game in August under the name Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. The publisher has a history of adding silly names to re-released games, including Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition.

German studio Kaiko is said to be handling the re-release according to a retailer link that went live before the announcement was official.

The product description on Xbox.com states Re-Reckoning will release on August 11. All the DLC from the original game--including Teeth of Naros and Legend of Dead Kel--is included with the re-release. The game also promises "improved graphical fidelity." You can check out a series of images in the gallery above.

The updated version will contain refined gameplay and better visuals, as well as all previous DLC.

In September 2018, after THQ Nordic acquired the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur, the company confirmed to Eurogamer that Electronic Arts continued to hold the publishing rights to the franchise.

Original developer 38 Studios went bankrupt, and the fallout caused a great deal of controversy in the developer's home state of Rhode Island. Studio founder Curt Schilling now works for the conservative website Breitbart.

The first one deserved better and if this comes out on the ps5/xsx I'll def. play it. Played it twice but only made it about half way through both times.

Original was good. Not so sure I wanna re-visit it though. Will probably give it a go if it lands on game pass.

I hope this 3rd party studio doesn't F**K it up! KoA was a pretty awesome game. It actually holds up really well today

Nice. I have the 360 version and played through some of it. Found it to be quite enjoyable. Wouldn’t mind picking this spruced up version at all.

Omg I can't wait the original game was AMAZING, it was sad that it never went anywhere. Played the original on the 360 and loved it and its freedom. I just hope this version also comes to pc cus I'm not playing the xbox one anymore :/

@javalino: If EA still publishes it? Maybe on PC. Otherwise no. On consoles it suffers the same problem that Skyrim SE does. It's near impossible to prove original ownership of a disc. Due to the way Live and PSN are set up, verifying digital purchases of the original and distributing digital copies of the remaster wouldn't worth it.

@javalino: Doubt it. These are new owners trying to re-launch the franchise.

So is the "improved graphical fidelity" just 1,000 pounds of bloom lighting and weird reflections applied to everything?

@ChazCheeto: It could literally just be 4k support for all we know. But Saints Row 3's remaster is pretty good so I have hope.

I really liked this game, my prob with it wasn't the quality, but how ez it becomes. This is such a good chance to actually make the game challenging or have a challenging option, yet I feel this will mostly go ignored. :(

awesome love this game ...but i would really like it better if they gave it game play plus, fix the PC version FOV and bump the texture resolution like they did in the SR3 remaster....another game i really would love to see THQ Nordic bring back with a new entry is Red Faction take the best of Guerrilla and mix it with the Mad Max video game.

Is it still relevant in 2020 after we've had a taste of the epic combat system of FFVIIR?

This game wasn't even relevant back at its release. Feels like a single player WOW game with how basic and boring the quests were.

I played it yet again when it became backwards compatible but this is great news for one of my favourite games.

The first 75% of the game was amazing but the last 25% was kind of rushed and thrown together you could tell they ran out of ideas toward the end.

This is the second best kind of gaming news you can get. The first is a follow-up to one of your favourite games ever (without being reduced to P2W crap). The second is seeing a deserving game come back from the dead.

This was one of the best games I've ever played. I just hope this re-release fixes the handful of glitches that I experienced on the 360 that brought down the overall experience.

I enjoyed that game...was huge with some of the best combat I've ever had the pleasure of playing with in an RPG. Man, it'd be great if a re-release meant a sequel was on the horizon.

@UrbanMessiah: The combat was terrific. Shame the rest of the world was shallow, but I understood why it was like that. Still fun when the core gameplay is so great.

@Barighm:

Agreed. A lot of KoA was pretty mediocre, but the combat and a few of the sidequest chains (like "The Widow" sidequests) were pretty great.

Nice. This was an enjoyable game. Hopefully they work on some QOL changes, and not just textures and graphics. The game was far from perfect, but it was still pretty fun.

@brightamethyst: Because it was fun? And totally deserved a follow up that didn't happen simply because of one angry politician?

It would actually be pretty easy. This is one of the few games that would benefit from getting smaller.

@brightamethyst: THQ has been acquiring a bunch of different IPs and remastering/reviving several different titles lately, so why not? I'll rebuy amalur with the right fixes to it.
