Kojima axes Zone of the Enders sequel

Cancellation caused by disappointing Zone of the Enders HD Collection, says Metal Gear Solid creator.

Plans to resurrect the Zone of the Enders series have fallen flat, series creator and Metal Gear Solid boss Hideo Kojima has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

Kojima spoke about the cancellation last night on his radio show (via Siliconera), saying that plans to continue the mech-battling series with a sequel to 2003's Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner have been scrapped, and that the development team working on the project have disbanded.

The Enders Project was originally announced in May 2012 during a Konami event in Japan, with Kojima hinting at a new setting for the now-cancelled sequel.

The decision to cancel the game was made after the recent Zone of the Enders HD Collection did not live up to the expectations of the series' fans. The development team has said it is working on patching the PlayStation 3 version of the game to improve its performance, but an Xbox 360 version of the patch is not currently in the works.

Zone of the Enders HD's switch from 30fps to 60fps disrupted the smooth combat of the originals, the developer has concluded.

Kojima finished by asking fans, once again, if they would like to see a new Zone of the Enders game.

Hmmm, I think some of the disappointment and negative feedback is due to expecting new material. This was an UPDATE not a re-creation like Thief. Peter Brown is also full of shit for giving it a bad review for something that is NOT meant to be a new game! - thereby giving the readers false expectations.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I think it's also about time to bring a port of at least the 2nd Runner to PC - it is loooong overdue!

With a PC port, that might have helped them a little.

"We ported the game poorly, so clearly a sequel designed for next-gen consoles, actually optimized correctly and made to run correctly is out of the question."

See, it's this kind of crazy space logic that let Kojima write the plot for Metal Gear Solid 2.

Best mecha game I have ever played . Well, the first one was pretty average, but the 2nd runner was superb. Great gameplay and great characters. Shame about the 3rd one...

Me and my brother always absolutely loved this game. The whole reason we bought a PS3 and the HD collection is so we could both support the Z.O.E series and get to play it as soon as possible. We have waited for god knows how long. About a good 9 years. now. We couldn't give two craps whether the game was too laggy, or didn't support this, or that. We always looked on the good side because this was such a brilliant game. Now I have lost most my faith in Konami, because they cancelled a long-awaited sequel, just because the HD release didn't meet expectations. Of course it's not going to meet very many expectations! It's a HD re-release! Come on Konami! Think twice before you expect these things!

It says the HD collections didn't meet the fans expectations and the illiterates are reacting as if Kojima said it didn't make enough money.

I blame putting the game on the 360 when the games were never made on the Xbox originally.

@Someguy1212 Screw you. As if putting Z.O.E on Xbox 360 is the blame for all this; I don't see anybody complaining about MGS HD Collection, a collection of games originally from the PlayStation 2 and PSP, being ported on Xbox 360. Konami and Kojima screwed up by picking a mediocre dev team to work on Z.O.E HD Collection (that also screwed up Silent Hill's HD Collection before it) in the first place. It's as simple as that.

Only game franchise I liked from Kojima. Never got the HD versions, though I wanted too as I love the series. Think I'll stick to the originals for the time being.

Could care less about Kojima and is MGS following. No respect and hope the series dies.

The moral of this story is, if you want to see a sequel you really want to see, pretend that the rereleases are perfect and that they improve the games. One minor complaint can cancel the whole sequel.

Go **** yourself Kojima. I'm sick of people pretending like these HD re-releases are somehow indicative of how a new game would sell.

I didn't buy your re-release because I already own the original games and can play them anytime.

Oh Kojima, how much you suck for this. Glad I never bought your Metal Gear series now.

Well minus the NES ones.

Am I reading that right?

"Zone of the Enders HD's switch from 30fps to 60fps disrupted the smooth combat of the originals, the developer has concluded."

Isn't it the other way around?

Not always.

Some games are intentionally created at 30fps and should remain as such.

Mario Sunsine always comes to mind when discussing this. Miyamoto originally created it a 60fps but later changed it to 30fps. He said it didn't really feel like Mario at that level. It (60fps) can sort of change the feel of a game and isn't always necessary.

Son of a b****!

I bought both games for the PS2 and the HD collection.

I would really like ZoE3, please.

ZoE2 was an amazing game! Really loved it and I don't even like the mecha anime or other games with the same thematic.

cheers

At least for once they didn't blame the pirates but their own damn selves. This is what happens when you release garbage. I'm a huge fan of those HD collections considering just how much the graphics are usually improved but I didn't even look twice at Zone of the enders HD after seeing how bad of a port it was.

Too bad, ZOE was a better series the MGS any day of the week. MGS is not even a videogame in my book, just a bland soap opera with robots and nukes. Oh and the controls have always been god aweful, after what, 20 years of making MGS you would think they would make a better control layout but oh well, thats what the video game market is coming too these days.

I remember there was a time when we felt sorry for Kojima, "oh poor guy he want's to make other projects but he is chained to MGS"...yeah, right..."chained" Kojima is a one trick pony, i doubt he can make a decent game outside the MGS franchise.

If its the same other places than it is here its not too surprising the collection didnt do well. I havent come across it in a single store where i live and its definitely hard to go buy it when there isnt a copy in stores to buy.

Oh come on Kojima!, we waited years for this, and you shut it down cause of Konami's botched HD handling of the collection, meanwhile you have no problem of releasing the seventeenth or whatever repacking of metal gear

The whole reason I bought the HD versions was to show my support. Guess it wasn't enough. I was really hoping to see a new ZOE. At least I know now instead of waiting years like I am for the Last Guardian and FF Verses XIII.

@CMakaCreative Yea I hate how when most companies scrap projects they don't tell anyone. I guess they figure there is less of a fallout if people just slowly lose interest rather than being told straight up that there's never going to be a game. It's freaking annoying; we all know VS 13 is never happening and yet Square treats us like idiots.

Think Kojima thinking in the wrong way if a new ZOE is well made then people new to the saga will try to pirchase the first games. I thonk he dont want yo deal with the risk of doing a great game without the support of a blindless hype that people normally show with the MGS.

@Mizarzeug I'm not defending him, really. But he's not the only one that thinks like that. I recall it's the same deal with Capcom's Darkstalkers 4 coz' the Darkstalkers Resurrection failed to meet sales expectations for them.

@Mizarzeug I had the exact same thought. ZOE is a fairly older game with a cult following. It might have been better to just try to make a new title to both impress and renew interest, so the HD collection would hold more value to gamers other than old fans.

I love Zone of the Enders but the HD Collection makes me extremely disappointed. The excitement from ZoE2 is in how fast the combat is, but there are VERY RARE points in the game where it doesn't lag like shit. For them to give us an old game, put it on a new system and make it run like it's on a SNES is a slap in the face. Don't blame us for the cancellation of your game when you caused it. And if you fix your ****-ups, I'll buy the next one.

Oh jeez, remember how people complain that Dark Souls was gonna be trash on PC because it ran at 30 max? lol...
