Kojima would have preferred Gray Fox over Raiden in Metal Gear Rising

Staff at Kojima Productions "insisted" on using Raiden in upcoming action title.

Hideo Kojima would have preferred Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to feature Gray Fox rather than Raiden, but the famous Metal Gear Solid creator allowed the silver-haired star of Metal Gear Solid 2 to take the leading role because he wanted the younger members of his team to take control of the game.

No Caption Provided

"It was my staff in Kojima Productions that insisted on Raiden," said Kojima in an interview with IGN, "and I respected their idea. I wanted to really focus on production than development, and they wanted to come up with a really cool hack-and-slash title with some Katana action and Raiden in it, and I thought ‘okay, that’s fine, I respect that’."

"But in my personal opinion, I wanted to go for Frank Jaegar or Gray Fox. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game."

Gray Fox was one of Snake's primary antagonists in the original 1998 Metal Gear Solid, and was the first inhabitant of the series' long-running and constantly evolving cyborg ninja suit.

Bayonetta developer Platinum Games was drafted in to finish off Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in 2011, refocusing the game around its action elements. As for Kojima Productions' role in development, Kojima said he wanted "to pass game development to the younger generation in my team, and have been trying to do so for quite some time."

"Before I never could give complete responsibilities for other games, but for Revengeance, they are fully in control. Besides, if I had created the game and directed it, it wouldn’t have been this game. I am very happy to see the growth in my team and how they have developed such an incredible game."

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 19 in the US and February 22 in Europe. Its latest trailer was released this week, and a demo will be available on January 22.

All of you losers whining about Raiden need to grow up seriously..... He's a sissy because he has emotions? So I guess everyone on Earth is a sissy, going by that stupid ass logic. Raiden is a bigger bad ass than Snake, he was killing since he was a kid. I would also love to see Old Snake in Rising, he would of died in the first fight. Don't take this wrong I love Snake, but I have COMMON sense.

Too bad Kojima Productions doesn't go with what Kojima wants. Wait... that doesn't seem too plausible. Hmm... go figure.

As, well, Gray Fox certainly would've been a better protagonist over Raiden, the infamous sissy, cliché anime character and he who ruined MGS2 for most of us.

And by the way... "they wanted to come up with a really cool hack-and-slash title with some Katana action and Raiden in it, and I thought ‘okay, that’s fine, I respect that’."

I'm somewhat speechless in the face of that. The best reaction to that, that I can put in text, is /facepalm. Just to not drag my comment out anymore, I've already posted my wall of text for today.

All this "whining" I keep reading about Raidens so called "whining" in MGS2 I fine pretty ironic. As if you guys would have dealt with that mission with no complaints. Yet alone survive it.

It's not that he whines about the mission. He doesn't complain, per se. It's that he whines about the circumstances, the story behind the mission, the whys and the hows. And he talks and talks and talks over the comlink, wasting absurd amounts of time on personal chatter during what's supposed to be a covert op of the utmost importance, with him as, by far, the most important piece in play, for their side.

I think that they made the right choice picking Raiden, I mean they change nearly everything that made Metal Gear what it is today. Because of that reason, I would have gone with Raiden, as most of you know he "sucks", now let's say they used Grey Fox in this game and they messed up, everyone would have been pissed off at the team for making Fox look bad. Now, my point is, use whatever was broken (Raiden) in the previous MG game and use it in a completely different game (MGR:R) and then if people enjoyed what they played or what ever, then the next game use the best character (Grey Fox). Personally, it was a smart move not to pick Fox this time.

And thus the story of how MGRR was ruined, which I discovered in R-03 yesterday. Then broke my controller.

I enjoy MGR:R the way it is. Raiden totally has become his own man from MGS2 to MGS4 and MGR:R proves as much, and I still want to see what happened between the two games. I really hope that they do release something detailing his events in between those two games.

@SirWander @Kane04 The story starts off interesting (a rival PMC stealing children's brains) but quickly descends into awfulness. Just wait until you see the final mission.

But don't let that stop you from playing it -- I had a ball with it.

I hate how politically correct everyone is being about this. Kojima just told everyone that this isn't his game, he had other things to do and he didn't want to do a game about Raiden. It's one thing to tell people that you let your younger staff create the game, but he also had to say that he definitely would have preferred a Grey Fox game. The name of the game was even changed from Solid to Rising as to make the clear distinction between a Kojima game and his younger staff.

This tell me that he knows 100% that his younger staff and anyone who likes Raiden are a bunch of soft idiots. MGS2 was one cry away fro being a romance game. Laura Croft & Samus Aran have more testosterone than Raiden, and just because the creators try to darken him up, that doesn't change the fact that he was apart of the single worst character change in gaming history. No one with half a brain likes him or wants to play with him. He's a heavily tainted character because he sucks and was only created to appeal to homoerotic Japanese kids, who like long haired dainty, starry eyed boy men as the hero. I think Kojima secretly wants this game to fall flat so that he can come in and save the day with his own great game, but I could never know that and I hate when internet idiots proclaim to know what someone is going to do just so that the present situation doesn't seem as bad. This game should have never been made. MGS is a good series and I'm always tempted to play it because of the compelling story, but Raiden should die. The only way this game'll be any good is if Raiden admits that he used to be a sensitive sissy but now he has changed.

You can't say that when Raiden shows up and saves Snakes ass, thrice, in MGS4, that it wasn't one of the most brotastic moments in gaming. Especially the third time.

@thejumbalia No, no, and no. Raiden is a badass in MGS4 and despite RR making him whiny and emo and retarded again (Thanks platinum) he is still a badass.

Your opinions are entirely wrong. Yes, people didn't like Raiden in MGS2 because they're shallow, immature, retarded morons and they couldn't open their mind to accept a new protagonist.

BTW, Kojima doesn't make games. He makes movies. MG hasn't been a game since MGS3. I highly doubt most of you people even played MGS or know who Grey Fox was or why that would be a stupid game.

@thejumbalia
you couldn't sound anymore incorrect and foolish if you tried. Kojima wants the game to fail so he can save the day with another title? that's one of the dumbest conspiracy claims i've ever heard! Raiden is soft? lol, no... and that's idiotic. you sound like a person who doesn't have any idea of what they're talking about, and simply didn't likethe change that - guess who - KOJIMA decided to insert in to the series... so your claims regarding raiden sound very stupid indeed. perhaps you didn't know how much Raiden's background is similar to Grey Fox's? maybe you should educate yourself about that before you come on the internet and start spewing nonsense. SO MANY people have eaten their words regarding MGS2 that gamespot put out an article that basically said "holy crap! i'm such an idiot for ragging on MGS2... after playing it again so many years later, this game is GREAT!" simply put, people werre butthurt like no other when raiden took over MGS2, and simply reacted by attacking Raiden - who did possess some visual faults... but the game itself was a great game, raiden wasn't actually that bad of a character - especially if yo put things in perspective.

Raiden has been a badass since he was a child. claiming that awesome female heros have more testosterone that him is juvenile and stupid. you got the order of events mixed up... he was a badass from day one, then experiments were done on him which made him your so-called "sissy", and then he went back to being a badass.

and this "sissy" was on his first real mission, which was a recreation of shadow freakin' moses... something that required SOLID SNAKE. how you could call hi ma sissy for having struggles at times and doubts at times is proof that something other than logic, reason, and intelligence compels you to type such ridiculousness.

@moe050 @thejumbalia goddamn, you really like Raiden huh? You really took my words to heart huh? Daaaammnnn I didn't think anybody would even care about my comments but I'm glad I inspired you to speak up and ridicule me so directly. You must be insecure about something I said to lash out like this, but I'm not going to speculate about what it is even though I have agood idea. But seriously, defending Raiden?? Wow

As a long time fan of the series i do agree. BUT. the damage was done in 2001, raiden did his damage, he was up against then time gaming bad ass [still is] solid snake.

I played rising , i love the mechanics and the gameplay, but of course its still rough around the edges and needs tweaks. Its a demo.

I dont mind raiden as some cyborg bad ass, But i would of loved grey fox .. seriously that thought alone.

But a game based in the metal gear universe is great, for me its a welcome.

@DARKKNIGHTPRABZ

yes, grey fox game would have been even better, because as i read about him i realize just how much story potential is there... but like Kojima said, if that was the case he'd have to be way more heavily involved, and it was decided a LONG time ago that he wasn't going be THAT involved.

so unlike the conspriacy theorist above, i believe what Kojima said. i also watched the development CD that came with MGS4... for the guy above to even suggest that what he did goes against logic, and is clearly pulled from his nether regions...

i'm looking forward to Rising... i'm picking up on Tuesday, and will be dawning my Grey Fox skin immediately.

If anyone has played the demo please chime in: is it just me or does this game suffer BAD from not having a block or evade? there is a parry but it does not work like Vagrant Story or Paper Mario. you can't wait until the attack is flying. its hard to describe but you have to "throw the parry out there" before any attack is flying at you. in other words the parry animation has to "finish" before you're actually blocking anything, so you have to do it BEFORE the attack is executed by your enemy, unless its a slow one, which is bad since there are really no slow enemies in this game (so far). So what happens? you feel like youre just standing there getting smacked around. its good, fast paced, and i do feel like a ninja, but thats the thing: a ninja should know how to get the **** out of the way, and if Isaac Clarke can do a roll in a mining suit I sure as **** expect a cyborg ninja to either roll out of the way or hold up a sword to block for as long as I say, not parry for 2 secs. then just casually lower his sword. Its really not like it wouldve made the game easier the fucker's already balls to the wall as it is. Vanquish or Bayonetta this is not. Demo players, comments on this??

@brxricano You do have block, you do it pressing forward toward the enemy and pressing "light attack" (Square on PS3, X on Xbox 360). The evade thing would be a nice addition thou.

@brxricano I agreed with you when I played the demo, but then I got my hands on the full game and changed my mind. The parry works fine as long as you can properly read the enemy telegraphs.

An evade move would have been nice. Certain attacks simply forced me to pull out of the action by jumping into the air and launching myself into a combo that wasn't hitting anything.

My biggest problem was the lack of a lock-on and a camera that insisted it knew what it wanted to show me while it obviously didn't. But I still enjoyed it -- batshit insane final chapter notwithstanding.

@bannermanner @brxricano Thanks on the reply. I since learned there is an evade, or i should say "evade". he'll hop while swinging his sword back, left or right if you press x+a+direction (x360). silly me? sillier game for not putting it on the screen at least lol. i would liked a roll instead of a...hopping slice?? but whatevs. and dude, if you beat the whole game without evading once then duuuuuude....O_O. and the camera acts funny cause there is a lock on its just auto. booooooo. manualllll. considering buying now, still. cause i love vanquish and bayonetta so much.

yeah he wanted to make another prequel thats all Kojima cares about Prequels,Prequels and Prequels im glad he stayed away from Metal Gear Rising otherwise this would have been another prequel im an Ex-Fan of the MGS series and now i hate it because of too many prequels too many prequels just ruin the game for me. in a series of 6 games 1 or 2 prequels are okay but now there are like 3 or 5 in the whole series MGS3,MGS Portable Ops,MGS Peace Walker and now Ground Zeroes and quite possibly Phantom Pain (if its a MGS game that is) im done with MGS. R.I.P MGS 1998-2010

@Hugoboss0889 @Leir_Bag That's true. I'm not really comparing the Raiden's game with what a game with Gray Fox would be. I'm just saying: Gray Fox is, overall, more cherished by fans. Raiden is kinda cool now, but it's still a pain to play him in MGS 2.

You know what makes me raise an eyebrow. Hideo doesn't have HIS name on the game, but approves is (sort of) and now he releases this bit of info. Maybe I am wrong, but that feels like discrediting the game. Before it even launches saying "I would have rather done Grey Fox."
Of course then again, it could just be him saying "This is the way I would have gone with it."
