Elsewhere, Moonlight took home the prize for best drama film and Casey Affleck won best dramatic actor for his performance in Manchester by the Sea. French star Isabelle Hupert was a surprise best dramatic actress winner for the controversial Elle, beating the likes of Natalie Portman and Amy Adams.

Other winners include Viola Davis (best supporting actress for Fences), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (best supporting actor for Nocturnal Animals), and Zootopia (best animated film).

On the TV side, Netflix's lavish period epic The Crown won best drama series, with star Claire Foy taking home best dramatic actress. Donald Glover's Atlanta scored best comedy series and best musical or comedy actor, while the thriller The Night Manager collected three acting awards, for Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, and Olivia Colman.

The Golden Globe winners are voted by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Together with the British BAFTAs, they are seen as an indicator of what might triumph at the Academy Awards next month. The BAFTA nominations will be announced tomorrow, January 10.
