Last Chance To Claim These 3 Free PC Games

Start your year off right with free games.

Epic is still in the New Year spirit, as its 12 Days of Free Games promotion is still going strong, a full two weeks after it started. From now until January 9 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, you can grab three free games as long as you have a free Epic Games Store account.

Two of the free games come from the Darksiders series. If you haven't played the post-apocalyptic action series that pits angels against demons, now's your chance to start from the beginning of the saga. Darksiders Warmastered Edition and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition are remastered versions of the first two games in the series. Both games offer quality hack and slash gameplay and awesome atmospheres. Darksiders received an 8/10 in GameSpot's original 2010 review, and Darksiders II earned an 8.5/10 in GameSpot's original 2012 review.

Now Playing: First 18 Minutes Of Darksiders Genesis Gameplay

No Caption Provided

If you like what you play, you can move onto 2018's Darksiders 3 and the recently-released Darksiders Genesis, which introduces more role-playing mechanics and a new top-down perspective.

Quite a departure from Darksiders, Steep is a 2016 extreme sports sim from Ubisoft. Though focused on snowboarding and skiing, Steep also has paragliding, sledding, base jumping, and wingsuit flying. Steep earned a 7/10 in GameSpot's review. Critic Leif Johnson praised the open world mountain and the game's overall variety while lamenting the lack of objective rewards beyond cosmetics.

Was right to be suspicious why they posted review scores for 1 and 2 but not 3. A measly 4. :(

Without the Epic store, we never would’ve gotten another official Half Life title.

@jsprunk: We still haven't; it has not come out yet AFAIK, but the tense you use suggests that it has? The VR one with Alyx, right?

Not really a grammar nazi but am just pointing out the semantics of your post and my takeaway -- there's confusion caused. If the VR title has come out, I apologize.

Also, do we really count VR titles as main entries or even popular ones, regardless if they're official or not? lol. Just messing with you.

@Jarrkha: Nice catch...we technically received the title of the game (yes, Alyx) already, so I used language that assumed the release was coming. The content remains to be seen though. Didn't mean to confuse, but I can understand what you mean. It's a touchy subject, since HL2 is one of my (and many other's) favorite games of all time. Also, I made the "official" distinction because of the two other "unofficial" Half Life titles presently being worked on by companies that aren't Valve.

@jsprunk: There are two other titles being worked on? Ah, that's good to know! Which ones are you referring to?

@Jarrkha: Here's the article printed by Game Informer not too long ago.

The really, really funny part is, one of those unofficial Half Life 3 games is being created using Unreal Engine 4. (Epic, lololol)

Most of the games I got on Epic are for free so free is always better... I have most of these on steam, I gave my money to the devs so why not get the games free again😁

@at0m1x: Smart, because who knows if your Steam licenses could or would ever get revoked. Spares are always good -- and you're legally entitled to make spares of stuff you own anyway!

@BabeNewelll: I'd rather have no third-party digital storefront and no DRM, but hey, those days are long gone. I would also rather not have divisive camps, zealots, try-hard keyboard warriors / tinfoil hat wearers, monopolies, sycophants, etc... all these together make for a bad combination, and a volatile situation when changes arise.

We should only have to put up with some of these elements, but with this market right now, it is all of them in spades. No. The attitudes must go.

Looking back at all the free games Epic gave away... ... ...none of them were amazing. They were all indie and mostly very old games. Disappointing.

@neurogia: That's just your opinion, though, and not fact (re: their quality). And they weren't actually "very" old games, which suggests your threshold for oldness is abnormally high.

@neurogia: My Steam library is made up of 98% indie and old games at this point. Over 220 games and only 5 are flagship games released in the last two years.

I haven't purchased a single game in the Epic Store yet, but with 74 free games in my Epic Library now -- some that overlap my Steam library and some fun games I might not have considered buying -- I found myself thinking over Christmas that maybe it wouldn't be too bad to buy "such and such" game that was on sale. I finally decided not to buy any games, but I don't think I would have even remotely considered it without the small repository of fun games already sitting in my Epic library.

I have to give some credit to Epic on this one. I didn't think their free game strategy would change my mind. If they keep it up and if they can improve the store a bit more Steam might actually have a real competitor to deal with.

@neurogia: Honestly some weren't, some were.

Darksiders is amazing, I hear Steep is amazing.

I've enjoyed quite a few of the games and there were quite a few I would have enjoyed if I didn't already own.

Most free games will be older games. For those who have never played them because they either never heard of them or were just on the fence about paying for them, free games are great. I know I enjoyed Surviving mars quite a bit. Sure it's an indie game but it's better than quite a few AAA that I've played.

@gunnyninja: ok how about this, you believe in fairness to devs but are to cheap to actually buy their game. Most of the good games epic gives I already own because I believed in the game and paid actual money for itnrather than waiting for a hand out.

@ballisticdave: Subnautica is $25 on Steam. Batman Arkham collection is $60 on Steam. You aren't good at this. You should stop while you are behind.

I doubt I'll ever spend a dime in Epic's store, but good on them for giving away tons of (mostly) great games. I just wonder how quickly people will turn on them once they stop giving away games and having those amazing sales and they settle in to being as apathetic as Valve. And given that Epic doesn't have a forum for their users, where will people go to complain about how awesome Epic used to be but now they suck?

@thedarklinglord: probably the one way that happens is if people stop playing fortnite...

I think it’s made them enough money to last them a good long while

So good for them for giving anything away

I actually got a lot of mileage out of steep when it was free on PSN.
