Last Chance To Grab These 2 Free Games

These free PC games are worth grabbing.

Another round of PC games are free for Epic Games Store users this week, and they're good ones. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is free to claim now, and because it's an M-rated game that may be blocked behind parental control settings for some players, Epic is also giving away Hyper Light Drifter. To claim the free games, all you need is a free Epic account if you don't already have one. Once you add the games to your account, they're yours to keep.

No Caption Provided

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden places you in a post-apocalyptic world where nature has taken over the earth and only mutants are left to scavenge and survive. Together with your team of mutants, you'll explore the fallen world, using stealth and turn-based, tactical combat to take down enemies. The game earned a 9/10 in our Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden review.

Now Playing: Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden - First 15 Minutes Of Gameplay

"Juggling all the demands of combat, from patiently surveying the field beforehand through to learning how to best counter each enemy type and improvising a new strategy when it all goes horribly wrong, make for an immensely satisfying tactical experience," wrote critic David Wildgoose.

No Caption Provided

An action-adventure RPG influenced by 16-bit classics and Studio Ghibli films, Hyper Light Drifter follows a character known as the Drifter, who wields an energy sword and utilizes other special abilities to defeat monsters. Similar to Journey, there's no dialogue; the story is conveyed more through visuals and music. The game also earned a 9/10 in GameSpot's Hyper Light Drifter review.

"Hyper Light Drifter's setting is so beautiful, so haunting, that I long to know all I can about it," wrote Kevin VanOrd. "I wish to hear the stories its citizens tell of the world it once was, and the one it might become. I want to hear the music that they sing, and see the places they have been. As stunning as it is, Hyper Light Drifter's greatest triumph isn't in the story that it tells, but in the stories that it doesn't. I don't know this place's entire history, but its desolate elegance inspires me to fill in the gaps myself."

Get this week's free games at Epic

Both Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Hyper Light Drifter will be free to claim from Epic until Thursday, August 22, when they'll be replaced by Epic's next freebie, Gomez.

I love competition. If Epic wants to give away free games and rail against Steam to gain awareness, okay... Note, I love Steam and try and buy most my games through them. But of course there are other sources that offer different selections or better deals, e.g. GOG, Uplay, etc...

I've tried to pick up every game that Epic has given away. I'll be honest, most I would never buy anyways. But loving to collect "free" stuff, this works for me. Mutant Year Zero was one game that I did want to get someday, so this was a great opportunity to pick it up for no cost. Hope I can find time to play it some day.

Free games aren't worth having an Epic account for...if I want them for free I can always do that anyway.

@vega2505: Oooohh. So edgy. You can pirate games. You're not special, despite what you think.

@93ChevyNut: I dont support piracy, but sadly what Epic is doing here is just another excuse people will use to do it.

I wish these free games articles would add "on the EGS" to the titles so I could easily avoid them.

@gunnyninja: I don't visit the homepage. I only encounter the site at all because of the tumorous lesion they put on the side bar of Gamefaqs.

What do they pay you to defend, Epic, btw?

@Xylymphydyte: Sure. Create your website. Show me what you are capable of. Probably helps if you develop a software engine that half of the gaming industry uses. Develop a couple of the most successful games in gaming history. Get back to me when you have done ANY of that, and we'll see if you have anything I want...

@gunnyninja: you mean these companies with new DD stores that want to "take Steam's market" stop doing this after a while?

I'm shocked. Epic will be no different.

@Richardthe3rd: EA wasn't trying to take Steam's Market. They were simply giving away games, and I got quite a few, including NFS Most Wanted. Just got 4 more free games from Twitch Prime. Let's see how long they last...It must all be a huge conspiracy against YOU...

@gunnyninja:

Huge conspiracy against me, ROFL. I'm cringing over here after that one partner. If you're going to use sanctimonious rhetorical devices at least try to be clever!

And if you truly think these companies are making DD stores for any other reason than because they'd like to have a presence in the market (aka market share), especially when they're giving away free content to attract customers, you really are naive.

Do you think these mega pubs look at Steam and think "hey, I'll spend the money to make my own DD platform so I dont have to pay Steam, and I'm absolutely not concerned with whether anyone actually uses it" after the fact? Do you think EA is happy with the fact that no one uses Origin?

Just... please.

@Richardthe3rd: No, I don't spend ANY of my time thinking about that stuff like you do. I don't care. It's really THIS simple, if you offer me a free game that I like, I'll take it. If I don't want it, I leave it. End of story. No butthurt about platforms or marketing ploys. Or Chinese spying fears. And no money out of my pocket. Giving me a free game doesn't lure me in to buying games. Making a good game does...

@Richardthe3rd: It would be pretty counterproductive for companies to give away NEW games...Plus, who's fawning? Subnautica is last year's release and still sells for $25 on Steam. And it's a pretty decent game in VR, too. Doesn't fit your narrative.

@gunnyninja: fits my narrative fine, just not yours I guess. If someone missed out on these then they should totally pick them up for free and sate whatever meager interest they may have that made the price of "free" their dealmaker.

It's not really a problem for me. I paid full price years ago, played and beat them and got my money worth. I still have access to them on a superior platform.

If anyone needed to wait for these games to be "free" to become interested then they either didnt know about it or weren't that interested anyways. So I say go for it, they werent sales anyways and the more people to try them the better.

Also lolz at the giving away new games point... just reinforcing the notion that giving away old games is not very valuable to either side of this debate.

(Also, Subnautica had been in early access since 2014 and sold almost 2 million copies before it went out of early access in jan '18, so kind of a bad example for you to use.)

@Richardthe3rd: You are really bad at debating, if you want to call it that. Where else in like do people try to argue against getting stuff for free. I don't care if it only costs a dollar now , or if a billion people have been playing it for decades. If it's interesting to me, I'll take it. I don't accept every free game I see, it has to be something I want to play. Well, accept For Honor. I keep getting that one free and still don't want to touch it, but maybe it's gotten better since the beta...

@gunnyninja: "you are really bad at debating"

Then

"You should love getting scraps handed to you like I do."

Your response is inane and pretty much defeats itself.

As someone who enjoyed these games years ago and gladly paid for them, let me be the first to tell you: enjoy pleb.

@Richardthe3rd: LOL. Well I didn't. You have no argument. You are salty for no reason and you can call me whatever you like. I hope you paid full price. I couldn't care less about what you should love. Learn how to use quotes. Don't incorrectly paraphrase me and then put quotation marks around it. Or I could just quote you, "I'm mad that people are getting free games for no other reason than I have no life"

@gunnyninja: zero problem with people getting free games. I say go for it with reckless abandon.

My problem is NOT with consumers here or really even the devs that buy into their pied piper song, it's with shady ass players in the market like Epic saying one thing then doing something else and sowing distrust. Its with people like you defending these practices, like they're doing something positive.

You can play your free games and admit the person who gave them to you is a disaster. And maybe you dont like Epic... great! Why are we arguing?

And make no mistake, Epic is a disaster that people are starting to recognize: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/08/why-one-pc-developer-turned-down-the-security-of-epics-exclusivity-offer/?amp=1
