Lego MMO launching in 2014

Lego Minifigures Online coming to PC, iOS, and Android during second half of next year.

Lego Minifigures Online--the all-new massively multiplayer online game from Age of Conan and The Secret World developer Funcom--will launch during the second half of 2014, it was announced today.

No Caption Provided

The game will be available on PC, iOS, and Android at launch. A business model was not announced.

Lego Minifigures Online is based on the Lego minifigures line of real-world toys. These toys will include a code to download a virtual version as a playable character in the game.

Players will be able to collect around 100 characters in all, and can swap between three playable characters at any given moment during the game.

Lego Minifigures Online will also feature PVP, though Funcom said it would talk more about this component later in the year. The game was originally announced last year.

A Lego MMO game has been attempted before. In October 2010, NetDevil launched Lego Universe, but the game had a short life. In November 2011, the Lego Group announced it would be shuttering the game. It managed to attract 2 million users, but failed to set up a satisfactory revenue model, developers said.

@jrabbit99 You mean the one mentioned in the penultimate paragraph?

"A Lego MMO game has been attempted before. In October 2010, NetDevil launched Lego Universe, but the game had a short life. It got shut down ;-)

@DaneGamer Yes, the Lego brand has shown that it can make a quality product and there are a lot of directions that a Lego MMO can go in terms of personalization and even building.

I see a danger in the developers being handicapped by a family friendly approach. Hopefully they will take the gameplay seriously because way too many "kid" games end up being overly simple. Kids are smart and will appreciate a challenging game.

I wonder how much the servers cost for MMO's. It must be almost prohibitively expensive because it seems like any MMO that slips from being wildly successful ends up shutting down from lack of revenue.

@blutosan MMO's are the typical high risk-high reward business model, but companies far too often don't realize the "high risk" part, it seems. Maintenance and updates and whatnot is quite expensive, though I have clue exactly how expensive.

It's funny that they're trying again when the last lego MMO failed, but maybe it was the design, not the lego brand that was the problem.

@Hurvl Yeah, the net code design for MMO's is probably as important as the gameplay experience. One of my favorite MMO's, Legacy: Online, had great reviews, but didn't last a year. It's network architecture didn't make efficient use of servers.

Can it technically be called an "MMO" when the MMO-to-world population ratio is 2:3?

Sweet. So instead of Funcom focusing on Dreamfall and TLJ like they should be, they are wasting time on ANOTHER new franchise. Don't get me wrong, I REALLY like Secret World, I hear Age of Conan was decent and I had fun with Bloodline...but that being said we all want Dreamfall and TLJ to finish. They've kept us waiting on a cliffhanger for far too long and it's terrible. That being said, I'm sure this game will be much more fun than the last Lego MMO...I have faith in Funcom.

I originally wrote this off as a kids MMO, but seeing now that it's being developed by Funcom, I'm now interested and this may actually be good. I like The Secret World even though you die way too much, so I'm now interested since I think it will be for more than just kids since Funcom is behind this.

Followed!

The last Lego online game failed, and I expect this to, too.

Too bad, you'd think a Lego MMO would be very unique and different from other modern MMOs.

Player housing using lego brinks or GTFO. Nuts and Bolts like gameplay to solve puzzles... this game practically makes itself.

Expect same old boring MMO trappings and extremely restricted building. Wasted potential.

@Adavanter This!!

I don't care what limitations they must work with or excuses they have. If they don't provide a free building game feature where players can essentially collect pieces and put up whatever they want and show it off, no one will care. Legos are not about mini figures, its about creativity and building.

The only way to make this work is to let people plays as the Lego characters from the movie or comic based sets, such as Batman, Lord of the Rings, Stars Wars, etc, but from looking at the pictures, that doesn't seem to be the case. I think I'll stick to playing the Lego Lord of the Rings game.

@DemiGenius24 While TT makes good games, I don't agree that they make more awesome games than Funcom. Funcom has made some of my most loved games of all time. To each his own I guess.

Don't blame me, but I think that LEGO and Minecraft have so much in common that they should consider a sandbox game. There are too many MMOs already and personally, I wouldn't play a LEGO MMO.

By the way, let me clarify myself, MMO as a adventure/quest related game. I would love to play a sandbox MMO of LEGO. As @Darth_Tyrranus said above, there is no history in LEGO by itself, it depends on a movie/book to become fun.

@quaker04 THIS. Me and a friend have said that LEGO should collaborate with Minecraft or do a Minecraft-styled game ages ago.. it being LEGO makes it a very obvious choice.

But no, let's make a LEGO MMO. Sigh.

Yeah... this seems like a very common sense approach for Lego as far as i'm concerned. Minecraft is great but... it does have some limitations visually. I'm honestly not even sure why Markus Persson managed to come up with this and get it out before Lego did. The instant Lego was involved with videogames period was the instant they should have been working on this. I'm quite certain whenever it was that Minecraft officially blew up as the next "big deal" in games, Lego executives should have been kicking themselves in the ass rather harshly.

Oh yayz, another hacked off lego game.

I don't think that young kids have the resources to sustain an MMO, and I can't imagine a lot of adults/young adults play these games.

Funcom, enough said, not interested. Their only potential game was Age of Conan, but they did it in the same world with WoW.
