Lego Movie 2 Trailer Is A Mad Max Tribute, And It's Awesome

The first trailer for the The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part has arrived. The sequel to 2014's animated smash The Lego Movie has been in the works for several years, but doesn't arrive until February next year. In the meantime, this first promo gives us an idea of what to expect.

The trailer picks up where the first movie left off, with Bricksburg now a terrifying Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic wasteland. Of course, Emmet is still as obliviously happy as ever, but when Wyldstyle, Batman, and some of his other pals are captured, he has to head into outer space get them back. Check it out above.

This trailer follows the first poster, which was released last month. The voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Tiffany Haddish, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Alison Brie.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will be directed by Mike Mitchell, who previous helmed the hugely successful Trolls. He is actually the third director to be attached to the project, following Chris McKay, who instead made The Lego Batman Movie, and Rob Schrab, who exited the movie due to "creative differences."

As the trailer suggests, the movie will address some of the gender politics around both the first movie and the way kids play with toys. This is something that McKay, who remains on board as a producer, spoke about in a recent interview with Collider. "[It looks at] what's different and similar about gender, when a boy plays vs. how a girl plays," he said. "It's going to be like the first Lego Movie was, where it's about something else that's really profound. I'm really excited about where the movie is gonna go because it's about these things that are actual notions that people have that might even be unconscious biases, where people don't even realize that that's the way they're looking at the world."
