Levine's Irrational at work on 'original title'

Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick says BioShock creator was removed from sequel to craft all-new game with franchise potential.

Online speculation has been rife as to the nature of the in-development project at Ken Levine's Irrational Games. On Tuesday, that guesswork went 0-2, when Take-Two officially announced that XCOM would be reimagined as a first-person shooter on the Xbox 360 and PC, courtesy of BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin. Levine had also been erroneously attached to the reboot of Take-Two's Spec Ops franchise, which turned up at German developer Yager in December.

Irrational revealed its new logo earlier this year, but not its new game.
Irrational revealed its new logo earlier this year, but not its new game.

So what is Levine working on? Job listings indicate that the project will be a shooter. And according to recent statements made by Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick, it will also be an all-new property. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Zelnick said that Levine's Irrational Games was taken off of last year's well-received sequel to BioShock "in order to produce an original title that could become another franchise."

Zelnick offered no other details on the project. However, speaking to GameSpot in January, Levine himself said that the game's full reveal would occur this year. "This is the year we'll start talking about stuff, and we stop hiding behind the iron curtain of secrecy," he said. He also said that while the game is the only one Irrational is working on at the moment, "it's a big project."

He went on to note that the announcement would come sometime after last month's Game Developers Conference. However, he would not confirm whether it was scheduled for an Electronic Entertainment Expo announcement in June.

BioShock changed everything I thought possible in a video game. I went in expecting cool guns and explosions, and came out with an incredible story dealing with philosophy, the psychology of its characters and much much more. If Levine can make a new game that's even better than BioShock...holy cow, I might crap bricks.

I'm sure here will be also a Rebelstar FPS. The previous XCOM FPS was canceled due to the closing of Glover producers Hasbro Interactive. The previous Rebelstar game was Rebelstar: Tactical Command. Produced by Namco (before it was part of Namco Bandai Holdings) and was released on the Game Boy Advance in 2005. That FPS may feature the same BioShock elements, but If they feature witches in the game, I'll be pleased.

Actually Ken Levine said in a few interview leading up to Bioshock 2's release that he left the design of that game with 2k Marin. He's been eluding to the fact of designing something new for awhile now so it might be interesting to see what he shows off later. Maybe we'll see an as\nswer to that at E3.....

Who wants to put money down that it has lame shooting mechanics, a great setting, cool characters and no replay value? Oh, and chances are it'll involve "choice." Yeah, sure were a ton of "choices" in BioShock.

Unless it's an online shooter then I'm not interested. The online FPS market is wide open since the whole IW and Activision debacle. Some game need's to step up the way COD4 originally did. BFBC2 wasn't it.

Aw, man...another shooter. Big whoop. Shooters everywhere these days. Given the developer, it may be more original, but I am getting a little tired of "spot enemy, shoot in the head, spot another enemy, rinse and repeat".

Seriously, who gives a flying **** that his new "original" game is a shooter. So far, I'd say that Ken Levine and friends have proven themselves masters of the anti-stereotypical shooter genre. We don't know the SLIGHTEST detail about it, yet some of you are already condemning it. Go play Madden, since you're obviously afraid of change.

Maybe that is why the original Bioshock was so much better than the sequel, though the sequel is still a great game. Looking forward to whatever is next from the creators of the original Bioshock!

@ajthelegend You're right, the PS3 doesn't just depend on shooters. It also depends on God of War. Seriously, the only exclusive games going for the PS3 are God of War series, Uncharted 2, and the MGS series. Oh wait, the other 2 are shooters! And the 360 would have more RPG's and the like if Sony wasn't so damn insistent on making all of its games exclusive (kind of like their hardware and software...)

@dzimm You should pay attention to the article at hand. It said it was not a new property, so that means no Freedom Force 3. Pay attention to the article.

Levine is the real deal as far game designer/programmers go. I guess I don't read the credits as much in games now since I buy them online mostly. SWAT4, Bioshock etc... I skipped Bioshock 2 just as I skipped FEAR 2. If you think about it, Monolith made Tron 2.0 and FEAR before going the "cardboard copy" route with a "sequel".

System Shock 2 and BioShock 1 were amazing games all-around. Atmosphere, art direction, the gameplay, leveling, and most especially the story and how it slowly developed over the course of the game and expertly-placed audio logs. Now, though, I'd like to see this masterful storyteller/gamemaker make a game different from the last two. I think he could provide us with a great new experience outside of isolated-guy in a post-cataclysmic environment. The fan in me would love to revisit the System Shock universe, but "me brain are smarter"-enough to know that something completely new has the ability to completely blow my mind like SS2 did way back when I first played it. I'm really anxious and hopeful for what he has coming.

System Shock 3 would be good, Bioshock was great as well and a good "tie-over" till System Shock 3, but it wasn't the same as System Shock as some has said. System Shock was (and should remain) more RPG and then there's SHODAN! Doesn't EA own the IP for System Shock though? Those guys that made Dead Space would make a rather good System Shock as well:)

Following in the footsteps of System Shock and BioShock, the new title will follow a protagonist who finds himself stranded in a desolate, nightmarish environment. The game's protagonist is an urbanite who finds himself stranded in rural America. The rural setting will allow for the haunting emptiness of System Shock combined with the horror of the devolved remnants of humanity (not unlike the splicers in BioShock). The game will be called CultureShock.

"Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, [Strauss] Zelnick said that Levine's Irrational Games was taken off of last year's well-received sequel to BioShock 'in order to produce an original title that could become another franchise.'" "an original title" So, if it's an original title, then why do you people keep thinking it might be a remake? /facepalm Quit guessing, and quit pulling your hair out. Just be patient and wait for the official announcement.
