Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 Loses Online Outerworld Services Soon

Get your rewards while you still can.

Square Enix has announced plans to shut down features tied to the Outerworld Services aspect of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and it's happening quite soon.

Outerworld Services will no longer be available starting on April 26. That will permanently disable a number of features in Lightning Returns, including the news and updates you see when opening the game; access to Outerworld NPCs; posts on its social network; and the ability to obtain Outerworld rewards. However, if you've already obtained any of these rewards, Square Enix says they won't be affected. That means you have a few more days to get any of the available rewards you still want.

No Caption Provided

"We, the development team and staff, would like to extend our thanks to the many users who helped to create a fun, enjoyable community for everyone," reads a message on the Square Enix support site.

Lightning Returns, a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2, was released in Japan in 2013 and in North America in 2014. There's no word on why Outerworld Services are being shut down just over two years after the game's launch, but it's presumably due to a lack of usage.

Square Enix recently shut down servers for Final Fantasy XI on PS2 and Xbox 360 after 14 and 10 years, respectively. That rendered the game unplayable on those platforms (it's still live on PC), whereas Lightning Returns is mostly unaffected with the closure of Outerworld.

I never played Lighting Returns, is there any trophies/achievements tied to this feature?

It doesn't affect how I play, but I am very happy that the experiment tying a single player RPG to social media has ended. Failed is such a harsh word.

I really hate shit like this, they should just release an update that gives you all the items from the service incase you decide to buy it after its been shut down.

The fact that Square Enix turn Final Fantasy XI into an MMORPG in the first place means the roman numeral series is now incomplete. Had FFXI is its own game like the rest, it would had been something spectacular. Now it's not even playable on PS2 and Xbox 360.

@leeko_link: It's playable on PC... which is the platform where games are "immortal." Games from DOS days are still playable, and MMOs (like FFXI) can always be hacked to run on private servers, keeping the game playable even when Square Enix eventually kills it off completely.

FFXIV is in the same situation.

I really enjoyed this game. Didn't like the convoluted Xenoblade ending ripoff thing. But once you realize that the time limit is hardly an issue, you realize there's tons of fun to be had. I loved it. And beat it on my first playthrough with tons of time to spare each day.

Planning on trying 13-2 and Lightning Returns..... but i can NEVER manage to finish that trainwreck 13. I like long games.... but that one is long and SOOOO bland. 13 is the first case of me wishing an rpg was actually shorter.

@CaptWaffle: I'd probably like rpgs more if they were around the 20 hour rage, myself. The first game is amazing in the second half. Especially the last ten hours.

@lostn: I only wish all Level-5 rpg games were shorter, too much padding from fetch quests, grinding and completely dumb and unrelated story sequences.

@ethario: FF13-2 is MUCH better than FF13, even if it still has huge problems.

@Thanatos2k: Some of those outer worlds, all white washed and trying to find puzzle pieces and or mobs really dragged the game and story to a crawl during the 2nd act. It was unbearably hard (to continue playing) as there was really no antagonist to pull the gamer forward.

@Thanatos2k:

That's not a high benchmark. Getting your balls crushed by a steamroller is also better than FF13.

These features were never really important. I don't even know why they were in the game.

I'm shocked and impressed they supported the service as long as they did given it was really just a bonus to the core game. It was fun to post messages and buy items from real world players in a story-driven, single player Final Fantasy. Hope they implement something like it again in a future release.

This is why online multiplayer components forcing their way into single players games is a terrible idea. Try and play the game a mere few years after release and functionality will be crippled.

@Thanatos2k: That's my exact reasoning to not buying games that merge online with single player games. For some games it gives the game an expiration date. I still like to go retro every now and then and play old classic games. That option is becoming moot with games coming out nowadays.

I enjoyed the three 13 games, even though a lot of people hate them. I enjoy Star Fox Zero and a lot of people hate it.

Guess I'm different.
