Link's Hylian Shield, Built In Real Life

The master Blacksmiths from Baltimore Knife and Sword put their skills to the test to make gaming's most iconic shield.

Link's trusty sword and shield are among the most recognizable in all of video game history. So, it was only a matter of time until the master blacksmiths that run the Man At Arms Reforged YouTube series tried their hand at recreating the pair.

The smiths at Baltimore Knife and Sword built the Hylian Shield complete with real amber for the Triforce symbol and an intricate paint job. To accompany the shield, they also made the original Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with red and gold trim instead of the more common blue design.

Their final product is pretty impressive. To demonstrate their craftsmanship and the strength of the shield, the smiths close the video by pelting it with objects and arrows.

This sn't the first time the team tackled a Zelda-inspired project. Back in November they made a version of the Fierce Deity Sword from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Did blacksmiths really go through all these phases back in the days? I mean, he says that one step is crucial if you want armor to resist for combat, yet I doubt back in time they had all the knowledge and technology to achieve such things.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, there was a documentary on YouTube, about a master swordsman in Japan who makes samurai swords in the traditional way. He's a fifth generation master swordsman. The work he put into one sword was impressive, and yet still gets a better result than what we can get with modern technology.

<< LINK REMOVED >> No they didn't, shields were made from wood, felt and leather. Metals would be too heavy and unwieldy to use on real shields.

If any metal was used, it would be used to line the shield or reinforce it via thin strips at the back.

Later, some metals could have been used but shields like those served the purpose of displaying the coat of arms or owner's wealth.

As soon as heavy plated armor was made most shields were abandoned.

<< LINK REMOVED >> for some reason a lot of people have this idea that those of the past couldn't have possibly had the mental or physical capacity to produce works of art, but the mere fact of beautiful artifacts, monuments, paintings, etc. proves that they were plenty capable of producing beautiful things.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Then your knowledge of what they could achieve in those times is lacking, just do a google search on real medieval shields to see what they could accomplish, its goes well beyond what they made here.

It looks pretty thin. Would block arrows but be damaged blocking a real weapon.

Although, had they made it as thick as it probably should be - it would be very heavy.

Hopefully someone at Nintendo sits up and takes notice, and pays these gentlemen handsomely for those iconic mock ups. Shigeru Miyamoto needs to come out on stage at the next E3 brandishing these. Not the plastic toys he normally comes out with.

Joke's on you. Nintendo would sue them and confiscate the shield claiming copyright infringement. They're classy like that.

Badass. Now let's see him make a Deku Wood Shield from Ocarina of Time that's made out of wood.
