The work he put into one sword was impressive, and yet still gets a better result than what we can get with modern technology.

If any metal was used, it would be used to line the shield or reinforce it via thin strips at the back.

Later, some metals could have been used but shields like those served the purpose of displaying the coat of arms or owner's wealth.

As soon as heavy plated armor was made most shields were abandoned.
